Matt Taylor Era Begins

The paperwork has thankfully been completed and we have a new manager for tomorrow's game. From his interview on Radio Sheffield, he sounds very much in the PW mode - intelligent, thoughtful and ambitious. Best of luck Matt and welcome to the rollercoaster that is Rotherham United.

Onwards and upwards!!

Yes I too was encouraged by his interview, non of the usual platitudes that we normally hear from new managers first interviews. A new manager is always an unknown, but for the 1st time in many a long year I feel pretty confident we have the right man for us.

The Matt Taylor era finally starts with the game against Millwall tonight. Imo there were no signs of him thinking he was second choice(Bonner was first) which is good. He talked about hard work, desire, attitude and respecting one another as much as you respect the game. He went on to say you play a way which suits your best players. I think at times Warne was a bit too negative and his best players like Barlaser,Ogbene and Wiles in particular were asked to do parts of the game that didn't play to their strengths.
Taylor went on to say how good the ground,Roundwood, staff etc were and that the working class people of Rotherham were making him very welcome. He said he didn't have to change a lot and would steadily tweak things in training. I like what i am hearing from our new manager, an intelligent man and somebody who wants his side to entertain. He appears to have similar views about life and people to our previous manager which imo is a good thing to have at our club. Exciting times to be a miller. He has a massive job to keep us up and he will see first hand how we are lacking in the final third. I have a feeling the lyrics of the 'Who' might be appropriate. 'Meet the old boss same as the old boss'. No problem with that.

That should have been 'Meet the new boss same as the old boss'. Old age is a terrible thing.

Glad we have got it all sorted ahead of a big winnable home game. Saturday lacked any proper direction so having Taylor on the side line should be a big boost.

Sounds a down to earth intelligent man and is right that not too much needs changing. I hope the tweaks he talked about were trying to be more positive in away games.

Well what can you say about that performance tonight? Not a lot imo. The only thing their goalkeeper had to do was pick the ball out of the net. The positives were, for most of the time our back three and goalkeeper kept Millwall quiet. Unfortunately there were plenty of negatives. Little or no creativity, relying on hoofing it forward to two strikers who had no chance of winning the ball in the air.Two wide men who were forced back and in Bramhall, a lad who needs time to develop and which might cost us. Eaves offered very little when he replaced Washington who also offered very little. If we persist in hitting it long then it negates the best parts of Dan Barlasers game. I thought Wiles put in an improved performance and is one of our few players who provide a threat in the final third.
Another point gained as we strive to stay in this division. If we continue to play the same as tonight then i just cannot see us staying up. Taylor has to change the way we play. Stop kicking it long every time from the goalkeeper, move it quick wide then get Barlaser on the ball in space and find the men up front or wide. If we persist in playing Ogbene and Washington up top then no way should they be asked to win the ball in the air. Taylor has said he wants to get the ball into the box early. To do that you have to get it forward early on the deck. There is pace wide so get them forward and not part of a back five. Taylor has to give the players confidence to go forward and express themselves in the final third of the pitch. A massive job for Matt and the biggest job might be to get them to believe they can win games by playing attacking football and not relying on set pieces for scoring. We have relied on set pieces and frustrating sides in this league before. It just doesn't work i'm afraid.

Personally think there has been a bit of an over reaction all over to last night.

i would have snapped your hand off for a point prior , we have been without a manager and any coaching staff for nearly two weeks and the past two performances have reflected that.

Taylor summed the game up well. Good opening half hour followed by an poor display the rest of the game.

All fair comment Northstandmiller. However,do you think we have the forwards in our squad to compete at this level?. Warne got us up to mid table with a game in hand but i think him and his mates knew we just didn't have the firepower and the means or will to get better attacking players in. I really hope Matt Taylor can keep us up but without players in to change our style of play i think he has a massive job on his hands. His one saving grace is that this year i do believe this league is not as strong as before. Fourth bottom would be a great achievement.

Regarding the forwards Whiston , absolutely not. There is only Ogbene likely to score and make anything happen and he seems to have got some unfair stick for last night. Washington does very little on and off the ball and Eaves is miles behind play.

Everyone knew this was likely to be an issue and the previous management and the board didn't rectify it. Hopefully we can stay in a healthy position around the transfer window so that Matt Taylor can strengthen that area.

I was hoping Bonner would get the job. The main reason for that is that he would have altered the system we play. Taylor like Warne prefers the 3:5:2. formation. Bonner uses the 4:2:3:1 system a system i much prefer. Many people seem to think it is a negative way to play with only one up top. Both Wigan and Millwall played 4:2:3:1 and had much more attacking threat than we had and certainly more shots on target.
With 3:5:2 you need two very athletic wing backs who can get up and down the pitch. You also need players in the back three who are comfortable on the ball and have pace. We finished last night with Hall, wood and Peltier, a very pedestrian albeit experienced three. Norton Cuffey spent a lot of his time dealing with Burey and the pace he had which meant we played more in a 5:3;2; formation. Cuffey and Bramhall are raw. i do think both will make good players but whether it is what we need now i am not certain.
If we play a flat back four i think players like Harding would be outstanding as a right back(played well last night on left). McCart is a natural left back or left sided centre back and Humphries would probably be better in a back four. The problem definitely is the two holding midfield players. i think Barlaser would be fine but not sure who else could play the role. I like Lindsay and Rathbone (both good at ratting) but feel they are more division one players.Odoffin was bought to do this job but has never been given a chance. There are numerous combinations for the attacking three in midfield with Wiles,Ogbene, Ferguson, Kioso, Cuffey , Bramhall and even Biola in contention. We would still have the problem with the striker but having just the one and not two which means imo we are not carrying two positions. Millwall mixed it up and only rarely did they hit the long hopeful high ball.
What about this team
Viking
Harding Hall Wood McCart.
Barlaser Lindsay
Ogbene Wiles Cuffey
Washington or Kelly.

I've been happy with the way we've played this season Whiston. Unfortunately, Warne's departure has unsettled the team and confidence appears to have deserted them over the past couple of games. Without the composure and creativity in midfield, we've resorted to long balls which are totally ineffective without a tall forward on the pitch.

To my mind, MT has a decision to make; does he maintain the tactics that have seen us to the top half of the table or does he change the set-up and hope that the players can adjust and make it successful.

I would be tempted to keep working with 3.5.2 in the short term but bring in Kelly alongside Washington. We need to mix playing out from the back and through midfield with the odd long ball to make us less predictable. If that fails to work, then by all means look at a new formation.

Tough time to be a new manager at RUFC but he has a chance to impose himself on the club and turn this talented bunch back into a confident unit who can be comfortable in the Championship.

I am pretty sure Taylor will continue with the 3:5:2 formation . As i said before it is the system he has used at Exeter. I agree with you Glenn that Warne's departure appears to have unsettled the team and a drop in confidence. Away from home we have struggled to create much (similar to last two home games). We also appear to have had a fair share of luck with teams like Q.P.R ,Preston and Middlesbrough failing to take good chances of scoring. This will not happen very often at this level as we know from previous seasons in it.
Quite a few of our supporters like Washington and his work rate. i cannot argue with his effort but i have failed to see what he offers in the box. Kelly scored an instinctive goal against Blackpool and i think he has to be given a start. Bramhall needs to be persisted with but i would be very wary of playing him away from home in a backs to the wall effort(which most will be). Ferguson should be given the shirt on Saturday imo. I totally agree with mixing it up between playing it out from the back and going long. However, if you play Ogbene and Washington the long ball is pointless because it will come straight back. I think most of our points will be gained by hard work which Taylor has alluded to. Getting the defence and midfield right will be his aim. With the forwards he currently has i just don't see where the progress in that area can come from. Taylor talks of getting balls into the box but if you haven't got the natural predator (Kelly possibly) then it isn't going to bring goals. Certainly a tough time for a new manager and i think the jury is out on some of our players as regards a talented bunch especially in this division.
