Successful Season

Whatever happens now this season has been tremendous. We are a very long way from being the biggest club in league one and are a very long way from having the biggest budget. We are guaranteed to finish above some clubs who dwarf us in both respects. We have had a record unbeaten run, have won a cup at Wembley and will finish fourth at worst. Yet I have seen certain players repeatedly booed and abused during games, have seen the team booed off the pitch more than once, have seen the manager get dogs abuse on many occasions with repeated calls for him to be sacked and have seen the group (management and players) regularly labelled bottlers, spineless, useless and similar. It has been a pleasure to see what the club has achieved this season. I hope for the sake of the players and management that they manage to get the promotion that their efforts deserve. I wonder if part of their motivation might be to shove it up the so called supporters and self appointed experts who have criticised, insulted and occasionally abuse them constantly during what must already rank as one of the most successful seasons in the history of the club. Yet apparently not good enough for some in a world where success is expected all of the time and anything else justifies the worst kind of reaction. It all feels a bit bitter sweet. I want us to win at Sunderland or Gillingham not so much for the prize of promotion but to avoid the embarrassing fall out if we dont get there.

Congrats to Icky Smith and Barlaser making team of the year.

I reckon if Vickers had played a few more games he’d have been in.

Not sure where you sit but I haven’t heard any abuse towards players at games.

In terms of general encouragement I think the fans have stayed with the team well and it’s been disappointing to hear and see the club basically say we’ve been sh!t of late, yes you’ll get some idiots but can’t tar everyone with the same brush. Yes the atmosphere could be louder and better in some games but it’s just the sign of the times, football is a more family orientated day out than a lads day out now and this is a contributing factor.

I've heard lots of abuse at games home and away. I have heard booing at half time in games. I'd say Wiles is a favourite target when things arent going well. Some people just never liked Warne and jump on any excuse to have a go at him. I've also read plenty of trashing on forums and on twitter. I accept that the culture of short termism might be a phenomenon across the game and not unique to us, but the calls for sackings and amount of discontent when we have had sticky runs of form or poor performances has been disgraceful. The evidence is all over Millers Mad although that might not be typical of the fanbase as a whole. If you read some of the stuff on there and didnt know better you would think we were in a relegation battle. When did it happen that a season like we have had wasnt good enough for Rotherham fans? We all get frustrated with poor performances and poor results but so many people now are so quick to get angry and spew their bile. It really is shocking.

It's difficult to get a handle on just how good we have been this season. 90 points is a fantastic points haul. So many bigger clubs with greater resources have finished below us. We had a fantastic unbeaten run and big wins at places like Ipswich, Bolton, MK, Plymouth and of course Hillsborough. A cup win at Wembley then securing second place in dramatic fashion on the last day. I'm delighted for Tony Stewart and for all the staff and players. It's a great time to support the Millers.

Couldn't agree more Smiler. It has been a fantastic season and, even though I was around for the 80/81 success, I think this season exceeds anything I have witnessed as a Rotherham United fan. Paul Warne deserves major credit for putting together a fabulous squad, playing an attractive and successful style of football, remaining steadfast when we were up against it and, finally, extracting great performances out of his side over the last crucial games and without doubt, the best substitution in history in bringing Kelly on to score a Roy of the Rovers winner. The relief in the Brian Moore stand was tangible and it was as if the shackles had finally been removed and we were free to celebrate promotion.

A great day, a great season and just wonderful to now sit back and enjoy the play-offs without the stress that we know all too well.

Onwards and upwards!!!

Also I was delighted with the first goal made by Icki's header. I was right in line with his own goal at Sunderland and was too stunned to speak for the rest of the night. For me he's been our player of the season - his strength and skill has allowed Richard Wood to be included and that has been a major factor in our success. Brilliant player management by Warne & Co resulting in only 11 goals conceded away (only 10 of which were scored by our opponents).

Icky has the occasional wobbly moment but on the whole he has had a great season. I think Edmonds-Green has been our best defender though. Possibly the best loan signing the club has ever had. He is quick, his positional play is fantastic and he is decent in possession. The lad isnt the biggest but he has a hell of a leap on him that makes him good in the air. We didnt start the season too well and improved when he came in, and our form improved at the end of the season when he returned from an injury lay off. If we could sign him either permanently or on loan for another season I'd be thrilled to bits.

Agree with all that smiler. The chairman has (again) promised strong investment on recruitment so quickly lets make Reg our first signing. Huddersfield wont want an arm and a leg for him but, like any other potential recruits, our failure to pay competitive wages will likely be a major stumbling block.

Well we did it, but I'm afraid I missed every game after the cup win, my poor old ticker couldn't take the stress levels. Seriously. I have to avoid excessive stress otherwise it adversely affects my heart function, something to do with adrenalin and cortisone levels. After the Shrewsbury performance I had to go into hiding. I avoided every game and went out of my way not to look up the results, until it was all over. A bit sorry we couldn't hang onto that superb points and goal difference lead and gone up as Champions if only for the record books, but promotion is promotion and 2nd it better than 3rd. I only hope we can make a first of it this time instead of being a points diner. Onwards and upwards. Well done all

Paid my respects to a remarkable bunch of lads last night.  Smudge was late and Chieo was so busy signing autographs and having his photo taken, that he almost missed the bus. Hope the Council gave them a great evening. Next time we meet, it will be in the Championship!!

Onwards and upwards and have a good break everyone.
