His first season in charge i dont blame warne ibbkame the board for appointing the two previous managers.
How ever subsequent seasons he doesnt seem to learn from his mistakes.
One thing is clear to me he needs a defensive coach staff and his tactical substitutions need work on
As i would expect from 'Derby' he gets some good points about Barlaser and i think it shows how difficult it is to value young players. I am not saying we should sell Barlaser as i think he is a good prospect and he is a midfield type (keeps ball well, takes set pieces, finds space, comfortable on the ball) which we don't have. It is the player himself who has indicated he would like to play next season in the championship.
The 50% sell on fee is the premier club taking out an insurance policy after putting in 12 years or more of time invested in the player imo.
For some reason Warne appeared to lose faith in Barlaser towards the end of the season. It could be he changed the style to a more direct way and bypassed the middle where Barlaser is at his best. Looking at the stats (which can be misleading) it shows Barlaser had the most assists along with Harding at four apiece. I think you would expect Barlaser to be top as he takes most free kicks and corners at which most of our goals come from. He also has the ability to thread a pass to the forward, but that appeared a lot less last season imo. To show how stats can be misleading, Mattock only played 15 games but had 3 assists, just one less than Barlaser but played in 19 fewer games. Barlasers pass accuracy was 69% behind Crooks at 71% and Wiles at 70%. Barlaser was easily the biggest creator of chances, but as i said before you would expect that from the dead ball taker.
I would like Barlaser to stay with us because i think he would get on the ball more in division one and hopefully we will play a less direct style that would suit him. I also believe if he had a good start in the division next year his value would rise to somewhere near what we think it should be. In the championship he didn't make that impact that Crooks did and that is why i believe we would get more for Crooks now. Do i believe Barlaser is a lesser player than Crooks? No, but for me we haven't seen anywhere near what he is capable of. Let us hope he stays and flourishes and when we have to sell, it is in the millions and not the 250+K i now think people will be looking at.
I agree with all of that Whiston. I like Barlaser and if he is here next season I would expect him to boss some games for us. He is a good footballer. I think we sacrificed him at times last season for the physicality of Crooks and/or the legs of Lindsay and Wiles, and of course Wing made himself pretty much an automatic selection. To some extent he might have been viewed as a bit of a luxury player in a side that was all about work rate. He definitely still has lots to offer. On the subject of stats, I'd like to think that even with my decrepit knees I could still take a penalty and deliver a half decent dead ball. If I had played every game and been put on pens, free kicks and corners I might have been our fourth top scorer and somewhere high up on the assists list. Often the stats actually tell you very little that is useful.
The summer transfer window is always more difficult for teams who have either gone up or come down a division. More so for those who have been relegated. We have to adjust our budget. Players will (I hope) have contracts that contain clauses reducing their pay depending what division we are in, so that will help the club. But some players will think that they have done enough to stay on Championship wages with Championship clubs. We cant kick those players out. They are entitled to look around and take their time. We probably need one or two of them to move and bring in a fee. But we cant spend that money until we have it, and we cant replace players until we know they are going. Add to that the fact that there is a wierd market anyway because of finances being tight for many, and it is going to be messy. If we can get the right players in quickly in areas we know we need bodies (full backs/wing backs springs to mind) get it done. As for forwards, we really have to wait and see who out of Smith, Ladapo and Crooks are leaving and what money they bring in. They are all under contract. Some patience will definitely be needed.
Ipswich reportedly paying their new signings £10k per week and are determined to get back to the Championship. No wonder Crooks is not as desperate to stay in the second tier now Ipswich have broadcast their interest !
One can see that it's going to be a tricky summer.
We all know we want quality here , there and everywhere. Reality is different. Market value and being a relegated club in a tough division. On the plus side is we do have that bit of a reputation now . However, it still has to be backed with the goods.
I'd be looking at keeping what we have first and foremost. None of them has let us down and its much more difficult to bring a player in for the money we have.
Are we unhappy with our current contracted players ?
Wouldn't it be best to keep them to their contracts?
What gain is there in selling crooks, smudge, freddie , , Ben, or other ?
It's a gamble . I'd rather plant my flag and focus on this team getting us back up.
Robertson following in the footsteps of former Rotherham player, Ryan Williams who signed for Pompey in 2019? Ryan Williams has since returned to former club Oxford United.
Tick-Tock, 4 weeks to the start of the season and it seems nowt really happening apart from talk and cheap offers to allow other clubs to beat us to our main targets..
I think we have to be realistic the financial pressures on the club over the next few years will be immense, we need to ensure we have a club and a team on the pitch each week and if that means looking more to the youth and bringing through some of our fringe players we will have to accept that. I think a top ten finish with a decent cup run is realistic and I do not expect any big signings, this will be a season where the management team will have to deliver with limited resources. I do think we need to try and bring in a goal poacher, even if we take a gamble in that area, if you have a couple scoring 15+ goals a season you are unlikely to be in the bottom four, add to that a tight defence with a good experienced defensive midfielder and we should be ok. We need to ride out the next few years and be one of the clubs that survives
