The first three games on EFL on Quest had penalties in them that were never penalties in a million years. The Coventry keeper comes out and gets both hands on the ball. Penalty given. Against us, Blackman at most puts the outside of his boot against the outside of Solanke's boot. Solanke takes a step, starts looking at the ref and throws himself to the floor. The worst one is at Watford where Saar falls over without even being touched. It's a joke. Giving a penalty is almost like giving a goal. Surely refs have got to be certain beyond doubt before they award one. If in doubt dont give it. They are being thrown around like confetti which is just encouraging players to fall over at every opportunit and games and livelihoods are being changed because of it.

Giving a penalty against Rotherham is guaranteeing a goal with Blackman between the posts. I'd back myself to score against him!
I can't see any alternative for the Ref but to award the pen. Blackman caught Solanke's boot from behind and, however dramatic Solanke's reaction, it had to be a pen.
At that stage we were lucky to be only one down due to another misjudgement our goalie had made. I acknowledge he made a great save in the second half, but on balance he cost us and I have no confidence in him. I suspect that lack of confidence extends to our back four.
We will have to agree to disagree about the award against us Glenn, but we can definitely agree that Blackman is becoming a bit of a liability. He flatters to deceive with some good saves but you cant have a keeper who makes one costly error in every game.
As it happens in a lot of games, it shows they are not against us, simply that they are incompetent, time and time and time again.
On ours, if their player didn't dive AFTER he'd taken a step, no pen is given. He won the pen by cheating - as correctly called out on the EFL show. He also waved away a clear hand-ball.
Last week we don't get a pen when a player pushes the ball off the line, etc etc etc..
VAR gets it wrong a few times, but more often than not, they get it correct. I'd like to see VAR in all leagues.
As for Refs, They ought to have it drilled into them that the best game they could have is when they have zero influence on the outcome of the game...
Far too many seem to want to play God and can't wait to make a decision that causes a 'big impact' like a penalty or Red card.
The current refereeing standard is great for cheats, players know they can fall over, dive, and invite the Ref to 'wave the hand of god' and take centre stage.
Too much drama, not enough quality.... whereas other sports such as Rugby Union in particular, get it right the vast majority of times and the quality of the refs is much higher, and they apply technical rules not decisions made on opinion or gut feel.. In Rugby Union and Cricket, the refs/umpires also welcome the input from TMO/off-field umpire, and are happy to be corrected - which shows they only want to apply the rules and not take it upon themselves to play God.
I hate the standard of refs in football, it spoils so many games...

I don't think it was penalty but I don't know what Blackman was doing coming out to him anyway has he was going nowhere, he gave the referee a decision to make when there was no need.
The trouble with football today is that it is analysed down to a forensic degree. I watched the Saint/Greavsie highlights of a 1995 match between Stoke and Man City (4-0) played on a pitch which looked very much like the ploughed field outside my front gate. But it was so entertaining; tackles flying in, some sliding in from yards away, great levels of skill to combat the conditions (Alan Hudson for Stoke ex Chelsea - fantastic talent) and no one complaining about over enthusiastic, physical challenges.
Today's standard is set by the Premier League. VAR scours footage for the slightest of offside decisions, the most innocent of ball to hand contacts referred for penalty analysis, a foot left in used by an attacker to drag his foot across to simulate a trip. It's all too clinical and the Refs referree according to these standards. Football is no longer about skill, it's about how to make the most of the rules and CCTV to gain an advantage.
As a result, the game is not as engrossing as it used to be. Everyone now has to dwell a pause of two marching paces before we are allowed to even contemplate celebrating a goal - just in case the technology says 'no'!
It frustrated me watching Match of the Day on Saturday with Gary Lineker and Danny Murphy arguing to do away with VAR. Easy for them to say now, but before VAR they used to show slow motion replays of and analyse key moments from matches. The pundits in the studio would argue that there were too many mistakes and that the stakes were so high that they had to use technology to get it right. If they did away with VAR the same would happen, because they are talking points. They can't have it both ways. For me, they either get rid of the slow motion close up replays or (if they are available) use them sensibly to try and improve the percentage of decisions they get right. In the Championship we have a halfway house - we have the images available but dont use them. I still think that where penalties are concerned it has to be nailed on to be given, and the current prevailing view that any contact equals a foul and the interpretation of what is and isnt handball arent helping. There are just too many being given. Its getting closer to hockey, where they deliberately play for penalty corners.
Never played hockey myself Glenn, but I find that all skirts can rub slightly! Although I never played hockey myself, my mum (and this is true) played at county level (for Yorkshire) and got one cap for England so I have watched a lot of it. They engineer getting the ball into the D and if they cant get a shot at goal they play for contact and deliberately hit it at feet to get a penalty corner, which about half of all goals scored come from. Swap penalty area for D and it sounds a bit like modern football, dont you think?
Regarding the penalty Saturday, there was a still image of the contact and Blackman definitely stands on Solanke's foot. As soft as it may have been I have no idea what Blackman was trying to do and Solanke was going away from goal at a tight angle.
Once that ball is on the spot it's no point going over whose to blame it's a penalty. All I would say two keepers we've seen so far this season have mistakes in them so Warney I know you take notice of me! 😷 give Vickers a chance in goal.
It's only meant to be banter that's what this sites called isn't it? I said before Bournemouth game we had no fit wingers good enough so obviously Warney agrees with me & plays wing backs. A keeper to me if he's got mistakes in him nearly every game he shouldn't be in goal. Johansson the game he played he made a couple of errors especially one he came for & got nowhere near it which Preston hit the post so I wouldn't trust him. Vickers our goalkeepering coach knows him from both being at Lincoln, if he had the choice feel he'd give him a chance.
So are you genuinely saying that you think Warne played wing backs because you said so? And you're also saying you can see inside the mind of Andy Warrington? That's mental even by your standards.
You randomly decided it was a good idea on friday to play wing backs after spending the last few weeks saying there was no way we should play that way, and now you want us all to believe that you're an expert?
No Flo made that winning goal against Preston so he got the chance to stake a claim for right winger in the side but didn't take it. Wing backs worked against Bournemouth. It suited Ladapo with Smudger up front with him. Same formation against Brentford.
But can you at least see that you don't have a clue about tactics and you randomly make it up as you go along and then forget all the stupid things you've said already?

There's not much I don't know about tactics. We have got to have 3 in midfield in the championship else we will get overrun there. So it's either 4-5-1 or 3-5-2 formations. Back tomorrow night.
