In the last minute Vassell received the ball about 25 yards out, there were at least 3 players that he could have passed to but he tried to spin around and shoot, he does this too many times that and loses possession 60 to 70% of the times he gets the ball, training is one thing but that isn't proper football is it, a true professional does it when it matters, when under pressure and does it repeatably.
I think you make some valid points, Derby. I dont think we have been as much of a threat at set pieces this season for some reason. I also agree that Vassell can be greedy at times (as can Ladapo), but I do think he has managed in the last two games to get on the ball in the final third, win some free kicks and actually hold it up and lay it off quite well. He has certainly shown up better than Hirst, who hasnt yet got the physicality or know how to have an impact. I'm not saying Vassell is great, but I think he has done alright. I also get the theory with the striker - put two or three wages into a star man who might make the difference. It strikes me though that the problem with that is that we rely very much on having a togetherness and work rate. Introduce a big hitter into the group on three times the wages of everyone else, and it really would risk blowing that dynamic out of the water. It might do more harm than good. Add to that, which player who can command that sort of wage is going to choose to come and play for the team that was (and still is) second favourites with the bookies to go down? If they can command that wage, they are probably not available to start with or to have better options available. Like I say, I get the theory but with respect (I know we have disagreed on other things in the past and I'm not looking to fall out with you) I dont think it's as simple as that, or we would probably have done it.
Jones Thompson Tilt you havin a laugh! I said this start of last season Mattock & Smith have never been the same since the last championship season when they played above themselves. Vassell never rated can't rely on him to play to a good enough level. Hope Clarke plays tomorrow night, good surprise last game he added something to the side.
Smiler I am not going to fall out, don't worry. I know it is hard to get a goal scorer, but for me we haven't made any attempt this season to get one. I just think Warne doesn't see the importance of a goalscorer, he like his forwards to run around a lot.
well we havent started well, smith cant control a bag of sand, we cant cross a ball and their wide players are ripping us apart, it is a great dvd to show our wide players how it is done. Now MacDonald has more goals that all our strikers
I think Hirst was a punt at getting a goalscorer in at a cost we could afford. It hasnt worked so far. That first half was a nightmare. The first goal is a double deflection and the penalty looks incredibly soft and hard to take after what happened at Swansea, but overall they are just getting at our back four far too easily and we cant handle the three lively forwards they have playing around their big target man. Watching them is a lesson in how one up front can work. They have three players supporting the lone striker who have real quality. We just havent got that quality. That's it really.
