Today's win

Its very strange that we see criticism of our players by one or two of our fans, based on age. Wood for example, written off two years ago as being past it, too old and too slow. Warney should have got rid a long time ago. At 34 he is perhaps in the twilight of his career, he does however, make a huge contribution on the pitch despite his age.

The self same critic on this forum then make the following statement:-

"Burton they've got Quinn, we've got Mcdonald. I know who I'd sooner have but don't think Warney would want Quinn here. Don't think he's fit in with Warney's ideas how it should be. Quinn he's no problem just he's played at a good level would know what's required."

So Quinn, still has it at 33, which he undoubtedly has; Wood at 34 is way past his pension age. We do seem to enjoy sticking the boot into our own OAP regardless of the outstanding effect he seems to have on the boys when he plays. He too has played at a 'good level' and knows what is required and in addition pops up with goals into the bargain.

Clearly non of the attributes of 'Warney's boys' seem to count for much. 'Get rid and give the young uns a chance' they cry at every opportunity, whereas opposition players with similar abilities and attitudes and age, are lauded as being the type of player Warne ought to be signing. It seems there is an inability to give credit where credit is due. A Rotherham player is criticised simply for being on the team sheet and not for the contribution on the pitch. Strange indeed.

I think that the Millers should just do the decent thing and request a three point deduction and that the points be awarded to Burton because they didn't deserve to lose. In fact, to take it a stage further, the result of games should be decided by a committee, based on possession, shots on target, artistic impression and technical merit rather than the number of goals scored and conceded.

All very fair points Calypso.

Its about getting the balance right. We have a relatively young squad but young players need to learn, not only about what to do on the field but how to conduct themselves as professional footballers off the field. The management team can steer that but having experienced players around who are good professionals is priceless. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes over and above the couple of hours a week we get to see on the pitch.

The 'Warneys Boys' jibes are ridiculous. What is wrong with a manager insisting that people buy into what we are doing at the club? In every other walk of life FIFO is a mantra that can work. If you don't want to do things how we do them, go somewhere else. What is wrong with that? If (big if) we do get back up, we are yet again going to have to compete with clubs that have several times the budget that we will have. Having that togetherness and spirit is essential if we are to have any chance at all.

I'm afraid that some posters on here (we all know who they are) just can't and shouldn't be taken seriously, because their only intention is to troll. There have been quite a few really good posters who have been on here who don't post often and who have cited their influence as being a reason they don't post more often, which is a shame.

I wholeheartedly agree smiler. The psychology, in any collective can have an astonishing impact, either positive or negative. Right now this squad of players seem to have gelled and the attitude is clearly in the positive. As you mention, the prospect of promotion will bring the usual problems of quality and not being able to compete to that standard, going into a new season in the Championship, we need to maintain that team spirit to make a fist of it.

What I wouldn't like to see, is the team to be broken up in order to try to rebuild for that challenge. Busting up a winning formula seldom pays off in the long run.

i agree great game and i hope warne has learned from his comment about us looking jaded, drop players if you have too.

I know i may be seen to banging the drum about mattock, but where i sit on the west stand the number of times he loses focus or get caught out of position is frustrating

Without getting ahead of ourselves, I agree with you about that approach Calypso if we manage to get back up.  We wont stay up with spending power.  If we can stay up it will be that togetherness that will do it.  It's so easy to look at the last campaign and convince yourself that spending a bit of money might have got us a few more points, but that sort of player might want more money than the players already here, and with that comes the risk of upsetting the apple cart.  It's a delicate balance.  Anyway, it would be a nice problem to have.
