FA cup and Joke(EFL) Trophy

For me, we play our weakest (i.e. most reserves we can play) possible in both games.

Positive = gives players not regularly starting a run-out to show if they can do the business, including Ladapo, Lamy etc

Sensible = don't risk injuries and rest players like Wiles, Crooks, Smith who could probably do with the rest....

It's nice to get a run in the FA cup, but not at the expense of our chance of promotion, and the EFL have totally destroyed the 'Auto Windscreens' trophy which needs to be scrapped in my opinion.

Thoughts ?

I totally agree. The FA Cup has also lost its sparkle. The big clubs play reserve teams in that comp too these days until the latter rounds. The TV companies keep pushing the magic of the cup but to be honest I dont think there is any left. I could hardly care less about it. I'm only really bothered about the league.

Play our best team unless players have injury problems in the FA cup could be worth a bit of money if we got to the 3rd round. Mickey Mouse cup try some of the younger players I enjoyed the Donny game better match than a lot of our league home performances. If we do get through this round I would like to play Donny or Bradford a bit of local interest.

The cup games should be used to experiment with players, formations and tactics. The club should communicate this at the start of the season and price any home games appropriately. The league is king

Agree Donny EFL trophy was best game I've seen at the New York this season, best wing performance pf the season 2nd H by Lamy. But Warney won't have seen that. Lamy & Thompson played 90 mins for the reserves this afternoon also Cooper & Hjnds played so that puts more meat on the bones if Warney takes the blinkers off. Wouldn't play Iversen Ihiekwe Linsay or Smith in either game unless we have to. Would definitely would like to see Cooper Thompson Hinds Lamy play Saturday but Warney seems to be taking especially EFL trophy serious so expect not too weakened a side in that. We haven't got it right out wide yet this season see if we can use these games to do something about that.

The Doncaster EFL game was a game between two reserve teams with a couple of first teamers involved to make the numbers up.  Warne made it perfectly clear before the Man Utd game that he would rather not have to play in that competition and he has played the minimum number of first teamers possible in them.  Players like Hinds, Cooper, Kayode and Lamy have all played in that comp already.

Where you get the statement 'Warney seems to be taking especially EFL trophy serious' from I have got absolutely no idea.

I would expect the likes of the young players plus Price, Thompson and others returning from knocks or who have been on the bench lately (Morris, Barlaser etc) to feature in either or both of the Maidenhead and Lincoln games.  I suspect the FA Cup will be taken a bit more seriously than the game at Lincoln.

smiler side against Donny EFL trophy Price Jones Cooper Robertson Mattock Lamy Barlaser - Kayode Wiles Mcdonald - Lindsay Ladapo - Clarke Morris. Wouldn't say that was experimenting. Hinds was on the bench never got on for Mattock.

I agree with Derby and Smiler, would be happy for those games to be used for experimentation and fringe players. But also we mustn’t get the knives out if the results aren’t brilliant as a consequence.

Starting eleven against Donny in EFL Trophy:

Price, Jones, Cooper, Robertson, Mattock, Lamy, Barlaser, MacDonald, Wiles, Morris, Ladapo

Starting eleven against Coventry four days earlier in a match that really mattered:

Iversen, Olosunde, Ihiekwe, Wood, Mattock, Barlaser, Lindsay, Wiles, Crooks, Hastie, Smith

Only three players started both.  On the assumption that Warne picked what he thought was his best eleven at the time against Coventry in the league (whether you or I think it is his best eleven now is irrelevant), he picked what was at the time almost his complete second string against Donny.  I imagine the eight who were left out from the Coventry game were not actually 'dropped' as such following a 4-0 victory.

It follows that Warne did not take the Donny game particularly seriously as a competitive fixture.

Tell me different.

Don't know about that, I reckon Smiler would be quite handy up front!

No gwru. You're missing the point pal. My opinion on who should or shouldn't be in the first team is just as irrelevant as yours for the purposes of this thread. The only opinion that really matters is the managers opinion. He picked what he thought was the strongest team against Coventry in a very important league game. Then he rested eight of those players for the EFL trophy game four days later. Then he went back to the Coventry line up for the very important league game at Blackpool the following Saturday. All of which suggests that he played what was essentially (in his opinion) as near as he could get to his reserve team at that time against Donny. Which in turn makes your statement that Warne appears to be taking the EFL Trophy very seriously look a bit odd. Sorry for all the 'he's' and 'his's' in that explanation but hopefully that helps clarify the point.

No problem smiler. Manager he selects the side. My opinion is invalid.

 No problem gwru.

Warne's previous selections strongly suggest that he will use the cup games to give game time to players who are currently on the fringe of the first time, or who are recovering from injury and would benefit from a workout, or who would simply benefit from the experience and that he will rest some or all of the players who won at Gillingham.

If I had to hazard a guess, I think the starting team at Maidenhead will be stronger than at Lincoln.  I say that because (1) the FA Cup is more important than the EFL Trophy and (2) he will probably want to give a full weeks rest to the players who he wants to line up against Accrington.

As DKNY says, if we are happy for the manager to mix and match with the league fixtures in mind, we have to cut the manager and players some slack if the cup results aren't positive ones.  We can't have it both ways.

I'm off to bed now.  I'm quite exhausted.

A replay is no good to anyone. No interest in the FA cup like there used to be. Start with a side to get us through, hopefully game won early to bring on fringe players. Do we risk our key players so far this season? Not got many options in midfield so Lindsay should imagine will have to start. EFL trophy rest all key players.
