BURTON TODAY

Both of you I'm glad we won cause it keeps the interest going. Want the home crowds up to a good level. Just that the game against the Man U under 21's & the Lincoin game didn't exactly get me on the edge of my seat. Hopefully next home game will. Sheff W? Just to add somebody on MM whose views I take notice of says Lindsay played well when he came on. I thought when I saw him match before the season started he looked like he had more to offer once match sharp.

I did comment that Lindsay played well when he came on, although I appreciate that you take no notice of what I think. The Man Utd u21 game was as near to a pre-season friendly as we could have got gwru. About 3000 turned up in the sunshine. Why you read anything into that game I don't know. Warne told everyone beforehand that he couldn't give a to55 about it. Essentially we've played 4 competitive games, three of them away, and we've won three of them. I know you'd prefer we had lost so you could have said 'I told you so', but 6 pts from 3 league games is pretty good and we've got through to a plum tie in the league cup. Cheer up a bit.

Good post Smiler. I was there too. Well deserved 3 points, we were the better team. Nervy second half, we just needed a second goal to justify our possession.. Vasell Mom for me. UTM....

Vassell was a handful today alright. They seem to be screaming that they should have had a penalty for Woods crunching tackle. As you know Davidedin it was at the far end but it looked like a tremendous if hard challenge to me. Anyway, balls to them. We had plenty of bad luck last Saturday so it it was a foul and missed pen maybe we were due a bit of luck today. That's how it goes. Disappointing that Clough has blamed the ref for the defeat. I respect the fact that Warne resists the temptation to do that as a rule. Mention to Stephen Quinn of Burton and formerly of our parish. He had a good go at trying to referee the game today and the way he played he should probably think about taking it up permanently.

Just back from from Burton. A scrappy sort of game. We started 433 and he changed after an hour to a 442 with a midfield 'diamond. Burton are a decent side so it's a great 3 points but we were far from dominant and there is still work to do. The ball didnt stick well enough with the front men and we didnt look after it well enough. We grew stronger as the game wore on and if anything it looked like we would get a second then we had a near miss in injury time when a screaming volley from them hit the bar. We were hardly hanging on though. I suspect Wood played because Mattock isn't fully fit. Wood was outstanding. His block of a goal bound effort in the first half and a crunching last ditch tackle in the second show what he can still bring. He might not be the quickest but there is nobody stronger or braver. The new keeper is very solod. In fact the entire defensive unit was pretty sound. I thought Wlies was very good and Lindsay looked a good player when he came on. The other stars today were an inflatable cow and an inflatable dinosaur. Why they were bouncing round the away end I've no idea, but it added to the fun. A good sized vocal following and always good to see the Millers win away. Three away wins in a row and gwru who hasn't been to any of them still wants to have a moan. Unbelievable really. This isn't an easy division to get out of and we are doing ok. We'll be better still when we settle and maybe add a couple more players.

 Basically how I saw it.

Points to note for me were that defensively we were good and we were more than competitive away from home and I think 0-1 was about right. Both teams had good chances not converted.

I thought Vassell was MOM. He was quick, fierce, strong and beat players wide and in the central areas. Couldn't have worked much harder and got very close a few time to bursting the net

The defence performed very well indeed and contributed to the midfield well, the first 15 minutes saw numerous attempts by Robertson to release Ladapo from Deep. Eventually, play settled in the centre of the park with both teams slugging it out, with desperate lunges and am efficient Referee looking on into each melee that developed.  Despite this, there were strong periods of quick fluid football breaking out in both halves, but again with the Millers having the real pace and threat.

Players ratings

Iversen-very strong. Dominated crosses. Early days but I think he might be better than Rodak=7

Olusunde-outstanding 2 half. Received a standing ovation for one amazing piece of play=8

Ihiekwe-very good first half. Quick and focused.=7

Wood- Very calming and looked good in that 4. =7

Robertson- Very good throughout. Tireless and committed=8

Wiles-A little in and out of the game but gave the team lots of options=7

Barlaser-Better first half than we have seen but faded badly second=5

Lindsay-Up for it. Too little time on the pitch to say...

Crooks-Mixed bag, but at times he played well=6

Vassell-Fabuolus=8.5

Ladapo-didnt figure too much and spent the first half chasing Robertsons 50 yeard curlers down the left.-6

MacDonald-Fitted in well when asked to come on. looked better defending than attacking (different game)=6

Smith-Didnt pair up too well with Vassell and gestured several times for Vassell to push off=6.5

Proctor- looked very hungry when he came on...

BBC report (copied word for wod by sky and others) suggests we were lucky.

I didn't think so and apart from them hitting bar and their number 9 missing another chance, that was it for them, versus many many attacks by us, as the highlights show. Best team won, ref had nothing to do with result.

Well done lads......

... forgot to add...

why is it an own goal ???

The ball was going in, the goalkeeper doesn't save it but instead helps it in.

But he tried to save it, and it was going in anyway, in my opinion the goal should go to Wiles.

I don't really care, except for some headlines 'own goal gifts Millers win' make it look like a fluke.

Best team won, so f**k off reporters, we scored, we won, accept it.

Nice to have got a win today I can't make it to away games sounds to me that we scrapped a win out as I keep repeating we are going to need Richard Wood ( magic man). We all have our favourites he is mine you nèed an organiser in the team. After last week's debacle changes has to be made that change has been proved positive.

Thanks for the reports guys. It's always good to hear first hand genuine accounts rather than sad armchair conjecture. I trust you enjoyed your days and your deserved celebrations! I was out in Lincoln tonight and they seem to think something special is happening over here - can't criticise their optimism but I still think we'll finish above them.

Sounds like McDonald's & Barlaser are not doing it. Crooks neither. Wiles is in & out. Lindsay step forward. Hope we have the wide men in place for the next home game. Warney says he doesn't want out & out wingers more like wide midfield players. My side for the next home league game. Iverson Olosunde Ihiewke Robertson Mattock Another Lindsay Wiles Another Smith Lapado.

gwru couldn't pick his nose he always chooses his favourites looks as if Lindsey is the no1 choice at the moment. What little bit I have seen of him he has not impressed me so far not saying he might improve wait and see. We needed those 3 points yesterday with us missing the next 2 games. Ì can tell him Woody will start the next game the magic man rules. Ì have picked my favourite.

Great result.

Performance a bit disjointed at times but never felt in danger. Olosunde is still the standout player so far. Jury still out for me regarding the formation, Smith looks totally lost in it and it wouldn’t suprise me if Morris replaces him when he’s back fit.

I don't want to be seeing Wood in the side. Robertson shouldn't be at left back. You won't get best out of Smith & Lapado playing this formation. I'm not having Vassell he's suddenly changed into this good player. No end product with him, can't cross a ball.

It's always good to win away from home. This wasn't the fast flowing game a lot of people are craving for . It was a battling, scrappy performance where we dug out a hard fought win.

Iversen made one really good save and was commanding when needed which wasn't that often. We got a goal which looked like a deflection and very few chances were created at either end. I am still a little worried about playing three in the midfield and Warne obviously thought so as he changed it just before the hour mark bringing on MacDonald for Ladapo and playing four in the middle. We are very much a work in progress and yesterday Ihiekwe and Wood were very solid at the back. Wood's organisational skills and drive far outweigh his lack of pace away from home in particular. Ben Wiles was the best of our midfield and Lindsay who only came on for the last 15 mins or so looked like he could battle and is getting up to speed. Vassell was the mom on our coach and thoroughly deserved it. He caused problems all afternoon and ran himself into the ground. Smith and ladapo struggled, but Olosunde is getting better all the time. Not a match to savour but a tremendous three points away to a very difficult opponent.

Wood undoubtedly has qualities that are valuable particularly in this division and as Whiston suggests particularly away from home.  Perhaps gwru you aren't seeing him at his best.  The dilemma with him is that he and Robertson are both very left sided, Robertson is a class act and unless we play three at the back or play Robertson out of position we can't really play them both.  Robertson is a very decent left full back but centre half is his best position.

Its not a bad problem to have.  When Robertson, Wood, Mattock and Clarke (who as I understand it is a more attacking type of full back) are all fit at least we will have good options.  It is on the right side at the moment where we are struggling.  Olosiunde has been outstanding so far and Ihiekwe very solid, but with Jones permanently unavailable and young Cooper unproven, we look thin on that side.

On Vassell, he was unlucky with injuries last season and when he did play he was asked to play out of position.  He did ok in an unfamiliar role and in some games (Middlesborough away was one) showed real promise.  This season he looks very fit and seems to be revelling in a more familiar role.  He was by far our best attacking player yesterday.  If I have a criticism it is that when he gets a chance to shoot he only knows one way - smash it as hard as possible.  A bit more composure would help sometimes (in my humble opinion).  But he is doing well and deserves his place in the side for now at least.

In a funny way this unwelcome break might work for us to get players fit and get any final additions to the squad through the door.

I'm thinking of taking my own dinosaur to the next away game.  Are you up for it gwru?  Only joking of course.  I know you don't do away games.

Warney put my lotto no's on Wednesday! Just watched extended highlights how did we win there. Wood took all the man but got away with it. Get these wide man in for the 31st. Wood it's painful to watch he's slower than me!

Wood got enough of the ball in that tackle, although it wasn't the cleanest. Burton managed two shots on target in the game. Clough should be focussing on that instead of blaming the referee.

What is definitely painful gwru is your insistence on judging games on the basis of highlights (even 'extended highlights' like the Sky ones you are probably looking at now) and pursuing your own agenda instead of listening even a little bit to people like Whiston, Ian, C, Davidedin and yes even me who actually saw the whole thing for real. Or experienced managers like Ronnie.

What they don't show on extended highlights is the amount of talking and organising Wood did, the headers he won, the blocks he made and so on. I'm not sure he would get in my team if everybody was fit, but I never feel like he is going to give less than 100% and let us down. Give a bit of credit where it is due pal, instead of constantly making yourself look an arse.

Wood is only here cause we have a manager who gives older players early retirement with pay. Evans didn't want Wood.

That would be the same Evans who signed him.

How can you engage with someone who doesn't even listen to anything anybody else says or thinks?  With somebody who bangs the same stuff out all the time regardless of what is going on around him and all evidence to the contrary?

I give up.
