Rotherham United made loss of £27,000 a week in 2017/18 pre player trading. Profit of £790k on player sales (possible sell on clause?) helped offset these losses. Income was down 24% in 2017/18 following relegation to League One. It would have been a bigger drop except owners increased sponsorship from £1m to £3m.

Relegation saw a reduction of £4.8m in funding from the EFL and solidarity funding. Match day receipts were more or less steady. Total income was just under £10m.

Average league attendance was 13 per cent down on the previous year but this was largely due to a 64 per cent fall in away fans in League One. There were nearly 6,000 season ticket holders and this year there are over 6,000.

Biggest costs for Rotherham were wages of £6.3m which fell by over a quarter after relegation and rent of £1m to owners which fell by 18%. Kieran Maguire of the Priceof Football notes, 'Rotherham seem to have good control over wages as only spent £64 on wages for every £100 of income. However if take out owner sponsorship would have been £92 on wages.'

Like many clubs, Rotherham are dependent upon their owners who have lent club £3.5 million and which appears to be interest free.

Posted after the thread... Family silver and inspired by a great post who cited the above.

Rather than hanging on to players with better than 50% mark up in sales value this article clearly supports the idea that we need to buy and sell pretty quick to stop the club falling through the football pyramid.

A quick bit of maths suggests vaulks n Ajayi just about balance Tony stewart s loans from the last 2 seasons.

Very timely thanks Ian.

What I take from that are the following points:-

1. We are astute enough to write wage cuts in the event of relegation into contracts. Not all clubs do. Credit to whoever is responsible for that.

2. Even after wage cuts, we have a financial hole to plug in League One. The occasional sale of a player is the quickest way to achieve that. Last time it was Danny Ward, this time so far Ajayi, Vaulks and Purrington so far. Therefore don't expect all the proceeds from player sales to be reinvested. Some of it has been and more will be, but we have to balance the books at some point in time.

3. Our TV money may go up and down depending what league we are in, but our essential size as a football club is pretty constant. If we have ambition to cement a place in the Championship we have to somehow make ourselves a 'bigger' club organically, particularly as FFP prevents overspending. Generating investment funds from player sales is the most obvious prospect. Gambling everything in the hope of future TV money is way, way too risky. It works for a few but is crippling many clubs.

4. In the great scheme of things, we are relatively well run.

4. Thank heaven for the current owner.

Good to see what an astute business person Tony Stewart is where would we be without him. No doubt we shall here from some supporters where has all that transfer money gone as we can see to pay wages. Hope the money we have spare brings in the right kind of players who we can develope with our newish training facilities we are a selling and bying club.

I think this supports the points I have been making about our dealings this summer. Clearly the model worked last time and this year they have gone even further by selling more players and drastically cutting the playing staff. They have also continued the loan approach as 3 out of the 7 players are loans, yes we have to pay wages but the liability on the books is a lot less as we do not own the contract. Football will always need it's owners we are no different and to be honest the owners of our club and other clubs know this and plan for it as well. I do agree with smiler (yes it does happen occasionally) that thank heaven for the current owner.
I am not sure that this years prudent dealings will lead to a top 6 team i think we have cut back too much this time and unless the next few weeks sees significant squad improvement and that TS doesn't let Kyle and Robbo leave makes them honour their contracts we will do worse than people think.

Not bothered if Vassell goes, what's he done while he's been here. You can't go on friendly's. Who have we played so far that's not going to tell us anything. It's been the best transfer window I can remember for getting shut of players not good enough. Potter Palmer Forde Taylor Newell I'm looking forward more to the new season now they aren't here. See who we bring in. Rob Scott & Del boy seem to be more up to speed on recruitment. TS have I ever knocked him. We are fortunate to have him.

You can actually tell quite a lot from friendlies! It doesn't have to be a competitive game to see if a player has quality. For instance, Barlasar - very tidy on the ball and has the ability to ghost around defenders effortlessly. Lapado - covers the ground like a cheetah and when he pulls the trigger, it's a 50-50 call. MacDonald - just what we need in front of the back four. Good on the ball, good in the challenge, strong and looks Captain material.

Gwru completely agree reagrding Vassell, a few goals against Bradford Park Avenue isn’t much to go on.

Was an odd signing at the time for me, his injury and goal record isn’t great. We can’t expect to do a Michael Smith with every forward player.
