LOAN MARKET

Next season will be the final one in which Premier League teams can send out masses of their youngsters on loan. It is likely that there will be a limit of between 6-8 which can be loaned out and a maximum of 2 to any one club. This will hit massive squads like Chelsea who have about 37 players out on loan and have a staggering 14 goalkeepers at the club! Fourth on the list of heavy loaners are Brighton and that got me thinking about Richie Towell's status. I think it's inevitable that these clubs will have to reduce the size of their squads, otherwise the youngsters will have no avenue to get playing time. Therefore Brighton may well be looking to offload players like Richie in advance of next year's mandatory cull and that might give Rotherham an opportunity to secure his permanent services at a reasonable price - supply v demand!

Although he's not been outstanding this season, he's a solid and reliable member of our midfield who would be good to have on a long term contract.

Very interesting indeed.

I wonder if this will increase or decrease the quality of the lower league?

It could very significantly change the way clubs do their business and really curtail opportunities for aspiring footballers.

How does one calculate the cost or perhaps more accurately the value of a player who spends seasons without a real 'parent club'?

Interestingly, I wonder what scheming and scamming the top clubs will do to keep the talent and make sure they cherry pick before they have to pay through the nose. I envisage the creation of a breakaway premiership boys league with players still earning more than your average championship player?!

As I understand it most of our players are on more or less the same wage (max ceiling of £5 k plus healthy bonus scheme) so Towell presumably would have to take a wage cut. Assume we are not paying Brighton a loan arrangement of any more than that figure. I would guess recruitment policy in January will be to buy lower league players happy to accept our wage structure.

All fair comments. If we can stay up this year our TV money will go up significantly next year so we may be able to lift the wage cap across the board, but of course the same will be true of all the clubs in our division so we won't be relatively better off. I anticipate that more of the Towells of this world will be looking for permanent moves but we will still struggle to get them whenever another Championship team is interested. That is really our problem - not how much we have to spend but how much we have got relative to our rivals. Splinter must be right - we have to keep looking for gems from the leagues below us (and they won't all work out - for every Robertson there will be a Purrington) or cast offs from bigger clubs who still have a chance (eg Ajayi) and we have to do better at bringing our own players through.

It's a cracker that we have to do better at bringing our own young players through. We play no hoppers like Palmer & Forde rather than give Wiles a chance. Play players out of position on the left wing rather than give Hinds a chance. Now your saying play Ajayi in midfield when Raggett comes back. So we're going to end up with Ajayi Vaulks Towell in central midfield. Were's the playmaker out of them?

Its your opinion that Force and Palmer are no hopers. Personally I think you're half right, but that is my opinion. You know that Hinds is a full back don't you gwru, and that you are suggesting playing him out of position too? Lastly, you assume that I or anyone else advocating Ajayi in midfield would have Vaulks and Towell in there with him. That isn't necessarily the case.

I know Hinds is a left back but he's left footed. Looked good going forward to me when I saw him. But we'll never know. If Wiles can't get a game he's no chance.

You all assume that footballers are purely interested in money i would suggest personal reasons also play a factor. Where they come from where the kids go to school age of kids wife happiness. Also are they happy at the club nobody likes to work where they are miserable it effects all parts of your life.

I suspect that when similar money is being offered by teams in the same division things like who the manager is and what the facilities are like can make a difference. Looking at the piece about Towell in The Advertiser it says he has settled in Leeds. We know that some of them travel from the north west. Smith said in a recent interview that he was moving into a new home somewhere north of Barnsley. In other words I don't think that location really matters a great deal these days. Izzy Brown split his time between London and Peterborough while he was with us. Call me a cynic but my guess would be that money is the decisive factor in 90% of permanent moves. And don't get me wrong, it is a short career and I don't blame players at all if that is the case.

I have to say that Money is the only real factor. Thats the nature of it and its a very unique situation that would get a player to drop what would be a lot of money to cover other factors that money has no influence over. So, I think its just a case of supply and demand. If there is an initial surplus of footballers then it is realistic to think any championship club will have a decent opportunity to get better players and players of a similar ilk to what a great majority of others are looking at.

I would imagine there are several players at most championship clubs that will never be on the starting 11. What of them? A potential significant reshuffle over a few years until the market sorts itself out.

But, its still going to be about doing what we can do at our very best. And, as we have seen over the years, our very best is much better than our very worst. "Money is king", but once you have the "gift" unwrapped its worth will be largely determined by other more intrinsic factors. The best example of which we are witnessing right now.
