Delighted with a very unexpected 3 points, although we had to get an unexpected one from somewhere after we couldn't get 3 points against Bolton. If we don't win at home then get at least a few draws (hopefully better!), against those bottom 8 or so we will go down, that's all it really comes down to.
We've now got a third of the points ac***ulation required for safety with just over a third of games played so we're on track, but we really need a purple patch somewhere as a fail safe for when we have a run of games we don't get much.
Football is such an incredible game that's why we love it, that these things can happen. I must say though the penalty decision for the first while technically correct to the law, the amount of those given must in the less than 1% bracket! the 2nd is nailed on, a handball has to be a 'deliberate act' with considerations of why it should be deliberate, the distance the ball travels the player had time to adjust differently to not handball it, really amatuerish from the player.
How refreshing is it though that we now have an identity? 'Rotherham won't give you an easy game', and for us fans knowing we're turning up to games and expensive away games knowing we won't roll over. Testsment to Warney - his staff and the players themselves - they're all a credit to our club and themselves!
Its a difficult job, adding quality on a limited budget without ruining what we've got in terms of team spirit and togetherness. I don't think we need or can afford wholesale changes. With Raggett and Wood back fit we are good in central defence and that also releases Ajayi into midfield should Warne want to use him there. Mattock is doing ok and Robertson can cover there. With all respect gwru if Frickley was the recent step in Hinds experience he is probably a long way from being ready. We have three big strikers to lead the line. I think there are still question marks at right back (Jones is unfit too often and Vyner looks more like a centre back to me) and in wide areas. I wonder if Emannuel is still out of the question? He is apparently playing well at Shrewsbury and Hurst has moved on from Ipswich. Newell and Williams I would keep but I would look to add other quality options and if that means moving Taylor and Forde on so be it. And of course every club wants that goalscoring striker (there was a Blades fan on yesterday wishing for the same, and they are second in the league and one if the top scoring teams), but they are hard to find and don't come cheap.

I was thinking that the other day Smiler... He doesn't seem to figure in Ipswich plans, and with Hursty gone.. a cheeky bid in January might get him back on a perm deal...
Just a shout out for Mattock too - I've not been a fan in the past but he's stepped up this season and been really good - so just a right back needed at the back I'd say... defence wise anyways.

Couple of points Ex - I think we're probably in the middle of our purple patch!
Secondly, I sit in the West Stand level with the 1st penalty incident - therefore I'm looking at it side on. It was an absolutely clear cut pull on Proctor's shoulder by their keeper, so the Ref got it spot on imo. The keeper's actions were unforgivable because Proctor had his back to goal and it was very unlikely that he could have manufactured an attempt on goal - so just a rush of blood by the keeper but well done him!

You can be absolutely certain that, if there's any chance of Emmanuel being available, Warnie will be aware of it and will do everything he can to recruit him.
I wouldn't mind Emmanuel back but only on a permanent deal. Vaulks will be kicking every ball cause he just wants to play. Ajayi holding midfield. Wood at Centre back.
obviously, the better side was Swansea. I look at the other 22 and I think they are all better sides. But they actually aren't. Some of us have appreciated what Warne has been doing and it is slowly dawning on others. He has built a real team and has evolved it. This string of relatively good results has been predictable. The performances have been consistent and the results deserved.
Next up 4/5 of the current best teams in the league.
I expect the team will do us proud. we may not garner many points but we will rarely be outplayed
So far it seems that Mr Warne and his team have learnt important lessons from our previous stay in the championship, and are putting together a side that is difficult to beat, albeit unattractive and frustrating at times. The cloth seems to be have been cut to suit the situation. We have no world beaters, what we do have is a team that never gives up, fights for one another, and carries an enviable team spirit. As the season goes on, personally I can see more and more similarities with the Notts Forest side under the leadership of Mr Clough. Before I get jumped on, I'd like to point out that in NO way am I saying the two managers and two teams were of equal quality, they clearly weren't. But the similarities between the two are there to be seen, Forest defended well for long periods before nicking the point, or points. It would be interesting to see the possession stats for the Forest team under Mr Clough, and how many wins were by a single goal?(Clue Mr statto to come on line and totally blow my theory out of the water!!!) If it means survival for another year, then unattractive, low possession, low scoring games are the way to go. Hopefully, giving the recruitment side of the team time to improve, and allow the team to evolve into a safe half decent championship side.
A good comparison in my view Towner, Cloughie put together a young side of relative nobodies and turned them into world beaters. All for one and one for all. That for me is proof enough that team spirit is everything, when Garry Birtles who was signed from non league, was scoring for fun, signed for man U and was a disappointment. Different club different ethos different team mates different outcome.
Ronnie Moore was an unwanted defender at Cardiff, comes to Rotherham and the rest is history, Rod Fern was wallowing in the Millers reserves until Porterfield put together a new side and the rest is history. It goes and on on, so yes Towner I think the Cloughie Forest side is a good comparison. Welcome to the board by the way.
So far this season our start has been ok the right hand side needs improving the space there winger got on Saturday in the first half was criminal I bet he thought all his birthdays and Christmases had all come at once. The forwards aren't scoring enough goals in January with the help of our recruitment guy we will have to dig a nugget out from somewhere with a few more goals upfront we might start picking up some points away from home.
Well I gotta say fair play to that then Glenn, it looked like the keeper just bundles him over, not often officials get some credit but that's spot on if he's seen that, not enough penalties are given imo, a foul is a foul, and if you're giving it outside the box as a free kick then you should be giving in the box as pen. I did one on Sunday for an U16s game, awarded 2-3 free kicks for shoving and countless times 'hands down' shouts during play and at corners etc, they didn't learn until I gave a penalty then it stopped.
Like Glenn I sit in the WS, and I am about level with the six yard line. The moment it happened everyone around me was shouting for the first penalty. The keeper panicked and pulled Proctor back with a hand round his neck. I don't think Proctor was actually going to get the ball, but its a pen all day long. That's not to say all refs would have given it but that one had the guts to and credit to him for that. The second one, I didn't have a clue what was going on at the time but again looking at the replay by the letter of the law it is a nailed on penalty. Fer deliberately (albeit instinctively) put his arms in the way of the ball. They were both needless penalties for Swansea to give away, but that's not our problem is it? By the way, welcome to Towner - there is no arguing with a word of that first post. That's us in a nutshell.
The concern for before the second penalty was given, was that after the ball hit Fer it looped over the top of Vaulks and all of a sudden they had a 4 on 2 breakaway from which they would probably have scored! The relief and confusion when the Ref blew his whistle was palpable!!
Sure we all agree what we've known all season. Taylor & Vassell can't play out wide & we are struggling at right back. Can't do much about right back while January but we have other players who can play out wide. Need to sort that now if we are going to keep out of the bottom 3 come January. Also get Wiles & Hinds involved before players who you can see are drifting down the pecking order.
Agree with some of that gwru. Taylor has had quite a few chances this season and it appears he is coming up short in most games(odd decent effort). I think Vassell has done ok in a position that is totally foreign to him. What worries me is that Warne does not trust Newell or Manning in the widest left position of a midfield five. I think he prefers Vassells physical attributes to the skill of the other two. I also believe both Newell and Manning prefer to be more in the middle than wide left. Newell might still be carrying a slight injury so like last year i expect him to improve in the second half of the season.
I also agree with getting Wiles involved and think he should play in the middle Saturday to replace Vaulks. He has several other options. Ajayi in midfield with Jones at right back and Vyner at centre back or vice virca. Jones in midfield instead of Vaulks, or Palmer in midfield , but i prefer giving a start to Wiles. The only time i would consider Palmer would be at home against one of the lower teams where he can get on the ball and find space. I think he is a bit lightweight and would struggle against a big physical team.
Hinds, as somebody said previously is in the development stage of his career (loaned to Frickley) and i think he would benefit from another loan period in possibly division 2. Plenty of time for him to get involved but just not yet.
My team for Saturday.
Rodak
Vyner Ajayi robertson Mattock
Wiles Towell
Williams Manning Vassell
Smith
Price, Proctor, Newell, Hinds, Taylor. , Jones, Wood . Not sure if you have to have an under 21 on the bench if you are playing one but it wouldn't hurt Wiles to get a seat. I think Palmer and Forde might be loaned out or sold in January anyway.
To have three left footed players in the back four when right back is the problem area would seriously worry me. All about opinions and definitely see Ajayi in the defensive midfield role when Raggettt is fit
