Maybe it’s my age, maybe I just don’t like change. I have an image of how things should be and it irks me when they aren’t. I’m like that with football kits. I’m a great believer in heritage and tradition. To me a club’s first kit is iconic. Not something to be unduly messed with. To be worn wherever possible. It therefore irritates me when a club unnecessarily plays in a change strip. I just don’t like it and I would even go so far as to suggest it’s disrespectful to their own supporters who’ve travelled all the way to an away game. Some clubs do it randomly. We do it all the time.
Ok, I know. It’s all about money. We, for some reason I just can’t fathom, have different shirt sponsors so never play in our first kit when away from home. It’s been going on for nearly ten years. I don’t agree with it.
Our first kit is great. In contrast our change strips have generally been a right ragbag of meaningless colours and designs. How magnificent it would be to be able watch the Millers play away in red and white again. I do believe there would be a benefit in playing in our first kit.
Undoubtedly, that would mean the commercial department having to do some work and find one big shirt sponsor instead of two smaller sponsors. That may mean a slight shortfall in revenue. Maybe not. Whatever, it is a sacrifice I feel would be worth making.
I have to agree, but it has to come from the top. The FA should force 1st kit use again, its bad enough all the grounds being renewed more and more staying at home to watch on TV, the identity is being ripped out of football for the sake of sponsorship. Forcing use of the 1st strip will go some way in reconnecting that lost identity, for us for example - is that Arsenal? - not it chuffin isn't! Kits used to mean something - they had meaning attached to them. Eg the Hull tiger pattern kit, Stoke really wide striped, Sheff Utd with the black between their stripes, Wednseday with the apple sauce stains (just kidding!), it's all gone and it's really sad.
I'm a traditionalist & would love to see my team wearing red & white away from home when there is no colour clash as it should have been. Now I know about sponsorship deals but for the amount of money involved screw Mears & also that yellow & sky blue number is becoming a curse.
