Without Potter we have Vaulks and Palmer then the untried Wiles. Not enough depth, even if we play 442. We may choose to play 451 at times. So even if we got Towell we would probably need one more central midfielder. I'm not sure though about signing young players on loan who can't get into teams who are in the same division as us. It doesn't feel right.
We need a midfielder with some pace who can work the ball. If we've got the money Duane Holmes or that type of player. I don't like loans from the same league. Reading Karanka he's only sending Yates out to get him fit.
Ryan Yates has just had his contract extended at forest to 2021. They obviously see him as having great potential. He hasnt played a game in the championship and in my opinion he would be a gamble for us. It might be one worth taking but we also have Manning who also has little experience at this level. What ive seen of manning i believe he offers more than Palmer but in palmers defence i dont feel we have played him enough in his preferred attacking midfield position. I will leave it to warne to get the best from all of them if we do sign young Yates.
I would rather see a more experienced midfielder but also realise its very difficult for RUFC to get those sorts over the line. I still believe Vaulks is our best option as he offers great energy, tremendous aerial ability and an eye for goal.He also looks a leader to me and if these two younger lads were in there with him i am sure he would help to bring the best out of them. As i said before he lacks subtlety(spelt better this time) but he would be the first on the team sheet in midfield and of course hes our player.
Can't see point in signing even on loan Towell. Whose going to make way for him Manning? Vaulks is a different type of player, he reminds me of Emlyne & Gerrard a predator. He's looking for that shooting chance, he's not bad with his head either. If any of those chances we had on Sunday, Ajayi Williams or Smith had fell to him confident one would have taken.
Ryan Yates I'd take him even while only January. I'd be looking to send Vyner back. Right back is our weakest position. Get Emmanuel back with a permanent deal agreed in January.

Vaulks divides opinion somewhat doesn't he? For me he looks hurried when in possession and is half a yard off a lot of second balls in this league. At the end of the day a lack of half a yard of pace gets exposed more the better the level you play at, unless you have the experience and nouse to read the game well.
I agree he is very good in the air and we all know he can strike a ball, and his commitment is never in doubt so there are pluses as well as minuses in my book. You know what you are going to get from him and he can never be criticised for not giving his best effort.
In terms of experience at this level perhaps surprisingly Manning has almost as many appearances as Vaulks in the Championship notwithstanding his younger age.
What we really need in my opinion is the right mix of players with different attributes. Ajayi looks like he can play as a 'sitter' to screen the back four, and he is good enough on the ball though prone to the odd blunder. I see Vaulks as someone I would want to win the ball and then give it to players with more ability (a very important role). Palmer is a fetcher and carrier of the ball who can keep hold of it, but lacks a bit of physicality. Manning gets his foot in and keeps it simple and offers balance with his left foot.
We are getting there but what I think we are missing is someone with some technical ability who can produce that bit more quality and the odd killer pass in the final third. They are hard players to get in because of the demand for them, so if we have to go to the loan market and take a bit of a punt so be it. I haven't really seen enough of Yates to know if he might be that man.

why should we be the one to find out if yates has the potential as championship midfielder for a rival team
we have our own potential in wiles lets get him playing more minutes and just get an attacking midfielder in on loan
From what I have seen of him Wiles has something about him, but none of us have really seen enough to be sure what stage of development he is at. I guess the argument in favour of someone like Yates is that he has a couple of seasons of league football under his belt, but I am all in favour of giving our own players a go if they are ready. It comes down to whether the management think he is or not.
Yates would be a good edition to the team, why are we moaning about the club trying to add depth to our squad, yes Wiles should be given game time as he looks a good player
I dont see too many moaning. He certainly might be a good addition to the squad and Hillsborough miller made a good point when he said why should we find out if Yates has the potential to make it as a championship midfielder. This is the sort of player we might have to add to the squad but i still believe its a gamble that we have to possibly take.
A lot of sides in our league and above play 4:2:3:1. (Arsenal,Huddersfield,Leicester,Blackburn,Bolton,Wednesday,Norwich,Forest etc etc). Wigan also ply this system. Now have we the players in our current squad to match them up. Ajayi is one who looks like he can play the holding midfield but who else could do it. Wiles would be a massive risk at this stage of his career,Vaulks would be a waste there as would Palmer. None of the wide players have the physical ability and its not a preferred position for Manning. That leaves us with what we did against Millwall and play 4:1:4:1. unless we sign somebody on loan. I think 4:2:3:1 would be a better option for us as it would give Vaulks more freedom to win the ball and give it to more skillful players either side of him like Manning and Williams(this is what Smiler indicated). The two protecting midfielders would also give a bit more depth to the defensive set up when we are under the cosh.
Warnock played the 4:1:4:1 formation with Halford in the holding midfield position. He had great success and kept us up but used up enough luck in those last dozen or so games that you usually get in two seasons. He still plays that formation at Cardiff. Its all about opinions but away from home and to a lesser extent at home we have to frustrate and pick up what we can. We will win more games by scoring from set pieces than goals from open play. Warne seems to have perfected this.
I like Vaulks as a player and 'a good human being', yes he can improve, (they all can), I just wish sometimes he'd have more composure get his head up and not rush something through. If he can learn when to add momentum or to keep it cool he'll be a helluva player.
I feel though we need Vaulks, Manning and Shemi all in midfield at the same time, we can't keep possession enough and need all those 3 biting (as we did Sunday), this doesn't give any room for an attacking centre mid. I kinda agree I don't think we've been able to say to Palmer that final third is yours, forget about the other stuff as I'm sure he'd do well and chip in with some goals and assists. Every time I've seen him play he's had to do a lot of the dirty work and he's just not cut out for it. You only have to see his passing (like that first 5 mins at Wigan or what he did a lot for Burton), to see he has got that clever diagonal ball in his locker.
