St Mirren are poised to appoint former Hibernian and Rotherham boss Alan Stubbs as their new manager.

The former Everton and Celtic defender, 46, was the club's preferred candidate after also interviewing Gary Caldwell, Jim McIntyre and Oran Kearney.

Stubbs, who led Hibs to a first Scottish Cup win in 114 years, has been out of management since October 2016.

He has accepted an offer to succeed Jack Ross, who left for Sunderland after guiding Saints to promotion.

They will play in the Scottish Premiership next season after topping the Championship in 2017-18.

The SPL is L2 level at best. He's found his level. Celtic & Rangers might survive @Championship level but if you take the rest of them...meh! The ones that sneak into the Europa League qualifiers are invariably hammered by a bunch of Lithuanian pig farmers.

What a disaster for our club he was, what a relief when he left. But we all have to earn a living and hope St Mirren do well under him for the fans sake. Good luck to them.

simply awful he was. However, the chairman has to take his share for that and he gave him far too long when it was quite plain what a disaster he was. Quite simply the worst managerial stint for some decades.

This might not be a popular view, but I think Stubbs was harshly treated at RUFC. His pedigree was very good and I can totally understand why he was given the job. He seems to me to be quite an intelligent bloke who knows the game (although he came across as arrogant because of his refusal to even try and engage with supporters). He was the victim to some extent of the fact that Messrs Stewart and Warnock could not get their act together, which left Stubbs with very little time to do transfer business and get the team that he wanted on the pitch in a division that is always going to be difficult for us even when we get things right.

In a nutshell I think it was a case of the wrong club at the wrong time for Stubbs at Rotherham, but that doesn't mean he won't be a good manager again somewhere else and I wish him the best of luck.

He was ubelievably arrogant and the alarm bells were already ringing after Morecambe put five past us in the cup.

What's done is done though and he's found his level back in Scotland, be a very very long time before someone considers him for a job back in England.

comments stubbs has made

Former Rotherham manager Alan Stubbs says he rushed into taking the job in South Yorkshire and did not do enough “due diligence”.

neither did tony stewart for that matter but it doesnt excuse his poor tactics his poor choice of players blackstock anyone

He reminded me of David Weirs tenure at sheff u in terms of his naivety .

when we played sheff utd at NYS under his rein I think it must have been the most constrained, afraid. uncreative and non aggressive team I could imagine.

It was as one sided a game due to tactics alone I think Ive seen.

Where's Bornamiller? Anyway, I always thought that he was too knowledgeable for this site.

Stubbs has just been unlucky. He simply hasn't found a suitable project where he can make his mark.
