It's making it worse cause Iran Tunisia ect.. aren't football nations. They haven't got a clue how to defend corners ect.., they just wrestle opposing players to the ground. Better sides, traditional footballing nations you won't see that. Referee should make his decision then if it then goes to VAR an independent decision should be made by someone qualified to make that decision. That Iran penalty last night if you give that there's going to be numerous penalty's a game. As previous post same as cricket/tennis limit number of challenges to decisions per game.

What a joke the Portugal Iran game was. If there was any justice both teams and the referee would be sent home tomorrow. Talk about bringing the game into disrepute. I've always thought with VAR that both teams should have one chance (maybe one per half each) to ask for a review of an incident. If you use it successfully you keep it. If you review unsuccessfully you lose it. A la cricket where it works really well. That would immediately stop this farce where players and coaches are taking every opportunity to play act and try their luck with a dodgy review. The ref just needs to be clear - are you asking me to review that or not? Takes the decision to review it out of the officials hands and teams wouldn't ask for a review unless they were really sure about it.

awful wasnt it. I have to lay most of the blame at the ref. He seemed totally off the game and certainly didnt appear to use any discriminating intelligence.

The VAR is bringing the very worst out of these child Egos on the pitch. its embarrassing and one reason I have switched off from international football in general.

As for England, they have played well but im sad to hear the same rubbish from all and sundry as to how we could win and how we should be this and that. I think it is simply mindedness. There are several teams simply better than us and another handful who could rightly beat us. We are a decent average team in the elite end of football. We may progress but I suspect we will lose when up against the better teams of Brazil, spain, Uraguay , Germany, mexico, belgium...we shall .

good luck

Don't forget Argentina are now in the mix. Argentina are using a high risk strategy. Up to now it's worked in their favour. Here's me thinking they were poor losers in their last game. They are definitely playing a game other than football.

I think we need to keep it the same 3-5-2 as we need to see how we can cope when Belgium push it back to a 5-3-2. Same personnel at the back. Ali will need game time after missing last game so in for Loftus-Cheek and Rashford in for Sterling who didn't really do what he does for City again against Panama.

After 60 mins, look at giving Dier some game time for Henderson, Lingard off for Sterling and Kane off for Vardy. I think the setup, team etc picks itself and no major great changes as I think we need players still playing. It is most important that we see what we're like having to chase a lot of the ball, how we can counter and see the weaknesses at the back tested (as this will be the theme after Belgium). How far we get will depend on how we can soak up opposition attacks, counter and capitalise and of course if we can continue to be a threat at set pieces.

VAR got it spot on - Good night Germany - absolutely toothless in front of goal, echoes of 12yrs ago when we smashed them and they were in complete disarray

There are a few positions where we can give players a run out without weakening the side. There is a balance between keeping the players fresh and losing the momentum we have got. We don't want to be like Russia - wins against poor teams then getting found out the first time we play a decent one. I haven't got a clue what Southgate will do in terms of personnel, but he has done a good job so far with preparations and the media etc, and to be honest I think he has been very impressive. The players seem to have a lot of respect for him. I think he will certainly play the same system, so that we have players who are used to playing it in all positions who can slot in and out.

 Like it Smiler....

I think if you look at our line-up, and I'm saying this before kick-off.... you'd be pretty happy with that team.

Resting 8 players and having that line-up, it's pretty good! Plus the new guys coming in are going to be massively motivated to impress...

As I say, they haven't kicked off yet, so we'll have to see if they deliver.

im not sure I agree with resting players. I cant think theres a way of analysing the pros and cons but breaking a team up that hardly plays together sounds like a strong argument not too. Of course there is the fear of cards and injuries but I say be brave and stick to the the best 11.

Well, the team out tonight has certainly proved we need the 1st team out.... I woudl have preferred to play Japan and take it from there.... anyway, at least we are in the mix....

I wasn't expecting wholesale changes like that. The game showed that our second string and Belguims are evenly matched. No more no less. A bit of individual magic won it. The fact that Kane never even warmed up tells you everything about Southgates priorities. Now we have Columbia - the first real test that matters - then either the Swiss or Swedes if we make it. That gives us a fighting chance of getting to the semi-final, which would have to be considered a real success.

It's hard for fans who paid hard earned cash to watch that but for us TV England fans it couldn't have worked out better. Can see us getting to the final now if Southgate has took it all in from these group games. Didn't rate Pickford tonight but Butland isn't much better. Give Pope a go. Did Rose do enough to replace Young? You've got to do better.

Side against Columbia Pope; Walker Stones Maguire; Trippier Lingard Henderson Dele Alli Young; Kane Sterling

I thought Rose did well apart from getting done for the goal. Whether that gets him in or keeps him out I don't know. I think Southgate will stick with Young. All yesterday really showed me is that the biggest player we have is Henderson. He has improved massively under Klopp and is a real leader. We don't have another midfielder of his type anywhere near. Dier is miles away from good enough.

Dier was bullied by Fellaini. Dier had a mare.
