It is such good news that we don't need anything from the remaining games. Having to go to Plymouth and get something would be a daunting prospect, and then if we needed to beat Blackpool - well anything can happen in a one-off game.
I think Warne might make a couple of changes. Smith has been working tirelessly week in week out and taking a pasting. It wouldn't surprise me to see Lavery start and for Ball to play a part too. I also wonder whether Potter might play an hour or so.
I suspect the game might end as a score draw, but for once I am really not too bothered as long as we avoid injuries and suspensions.
Hope we don't finish up the creek without any paddles at all. Our current position is too good to be true. I'm still pinching myself. We need to be strong against any team that we meet in the next few weeks. This business of making any wholesale changes to our team will not do us many favours. Replacing Purrington with Mattock at left full back may be one of the changes today. I was concerned that Charlton would make the playoffs and eventually win the playoff final. I may be wrong to worry about such matters. Plymouth could still be a contender unless we do something to put a stop to their ambition.

Have both Plymouth and Charlton now got the psychological edge over us? As Exe pointed out on another thread Warne may need to get pally with a sports psychologist.
expected to lose today, real tasty now for those last 2 play off spots with Scunny playing Plymouth in the week.
Today is not about a psychology or anything else, only about players getting time, trying things, poss taking a look at Plymouth and nobody getting injured and whatever other objectives Warney had.
Will be the same for our last game. We're quite fortunate, well I say that - we've earned the right to prepare this way for the play offs. Will have been good for the lads to play in front of a hostile big crowd too.
Watch extended highlights tomorrow but listening to Warney's post match sounded like we had a perfectly good goal called offside & Vaulks got the ball but was adjudged to have got more of the man for there pen'. Better to happen now than in the play-offs.
Don't think that side for today will be far away from side for the play-offs. Can see Mattock playing for Purrington. Newell for Williams & Lavery for Ball. Can anyone tell me why ***mings is on the bench & not Mattock who I'd start next Saturday if fit to get him up to speed.
Sounds like we played quite well today - missed a couple of good chances and didn't get any of the 50/50 calls (offsides and penalty decisions).
To me that is quite encouraging. On another day we win it.
If we end up playing them in the playoffs, we won't have anything to fear and in fact if we lost the away leg 2-1 in the playoff semi I would fancy us to turn that around at home against any of the other sides.
Just watched brief highlights. Didn't show you any of the off sides given against us. Sweet finish from Towell. I'd be more worried about what looked like Ihiewke's failed clearance for there 1st goal than dubious pen' given against Vaulks. After yesterday it's time to bring Ajayi back for Ihiewke, better of two evils.
Agree with Smiler I wouldn't swop us for any of the play-off sides. Warney has just got to get it right in his team selection. Looking like Charlton.

I think it would be harsh to drop Ihiewke just on that? - yes he didn't control the bouncing ball the way he would have liked but that Plymouth player had an awful lot more to do before scoring. The problem there was no cover - they're the balls Wood should be going for and Ihiewke mopping up around him if something like that should happen. We all know Woody is way too long in the tooth to be able to get into any of that. Plus point is if there was an error in him, then this is the game or the next to get it outta the way. It's as Warney says though you don't put your chances away and score 2-3 when you should be doing and these things can bite you in the bum, even at kids footy they know that. The players aren't robots and as mistakes go make many during a game but its only the ones that then a goal is scored we take notice of. Same goes for officials who don't give the right calls, if you're 2-3 goals to the good as you should be these things don't matter.
I only saw the pen from the highlights and of course it's hard to be conclusive from that angle and distance, but the way Vaulks goes to ground as early as that you're always going to force the referee into making a call. Does he need to go to ground like that? that ball would have been crossed looks like we had plenty of cover in the box?
Looking at re-runs of games from the seventies (shown on BT Sport sometimes) the sort of tackle Vaulks put in yesterday would never have been given as a penalty. He made an honest attempt to get the ball and ultimately got it. The problem yesterday was that it looked like a desperate lunge because Vaulks had let the 10 run off him and was a yard off the pace, and (looking at it from a good angle) he went through the player to reach the ball. I have to say that if that had been a challenge by them on us I would definitely have been screaming for the penalty.
Referees are probably better now than they have ever been. One of the problems they have is that the authorities have tried to turn them into robots. They have less discretion and less room to apply common sense. The other problem that they have is that almost minute by minute players are trying to con them, and they have become pretty proficient at it. This means that they have very many more 50/50 decisions to make than used to be the case. They also have the added distraction of lunatic managers on the touchline waving their arms around and contesting absolutely every call. As supporters we don't help. As a rule, the winning team tends to think the ref was ok and the losing team tends to think he was inept. And managers are happy to play up to that as it deflects any blame away from themselves.
Warne says they've looked at the second goal and from replays he's not offside.
The telling thing from Lavery's goal being ruled out is that none of the Plymouth players appeal, they all look gutted. Once again though how are fat middle aged officials meant to keep up with fit profffesionals who train day in day out? It's impossible, no wonder decisions are wrong and based on guess work.
looking back - the bounce was calculated by Plymouth as they didn't water the pitch before the first half, but strangely did in the 2nd half., it looked dry and this helped any bouncing ball.
