Well done Warney / Staff / Players

Thought I'd put this out there.

1 year ago we were in a real mess. Off the field contracts hanging around our necks from ex managers / Blackstock et al and far from satisfactory training facilities.  On the field, less said the better but purely on a basis that we were just light years from the quality required.

I'd like to congratulate you for far eclipsing our expectations, many of whom were fearful of a double drop.  On the face it seems the budget has taken a much needed stanglehold, but as per our league position this has not impacted the desired end.  The season aim of a 'top 10 finish maybe sneak the play offs', in case you need to read it we've made the play offs 'comfortably' with games to spare.  This is purely down to the work ethic of all concerned and instilling the right ethos.  Warney is the face of the club and continues to act with humble integrity (publicly) and is a credit to himself, the club, the fans and qualified coaches. (Unlike some people we could probably mention).  There are too many older, consistently failed managers doing the circuit who get job after job, I don't think Warney will be one of these.

Anyway whatever happens, this is a successful season, the Play Offs are a lottery - the winners will win by factors mostly beyond anyone's control, but I'm more than confident we'll approach the right way and give it the best that we've got.

Good luck everybody, don't come away from this opportunity with regrets!

Hear, Hear... Yesterday was the best all round performance I've seen this year with long lost players coming back into the battle and looking very proficient. Even Semi stepped into his new role as midfield general ( nuisance ) - those long legs fractured the oppositions continuity in midfield. He appeared to enjoy the freedom to roam. Barring referee's - and with that attitude the play-offs could be very interesting.

But safety first defence - no football please in our defencive third....ok then but only with 100% confidence - any less CORNER FLAGS LADS - THEIRS !

I think a few of us have already expressed our thoughts with regard to getting it totally wrong over PW. I was very sceptical of it all but he has shown he has the grit to face a wave of criticism and sniping from all angles and get the job done. He's also a thoroughly decent person which isn't a requirement in football but I expect it makes him a pleasure to work with and for. I'll be surprised if he doesn't get a few job offers in the summer and being on a one year deal means it's ****** all to buy him out off contractually. UTM and I hope it happens this season for PW more than anyone else.

Warney is improving all the time,he is a lot more "streetwise" and able to knit together a squad of players who certainly appear to enjoy playing for him.The strength of the squad is as good as it's been for a long time and take out Wood's age this is a very young squad. That is not to say Richard Wood has not played his part, far from it,I think both Ihiekwe and Ajayi have been improving playing alongside him.Throughout the squad you can name a lot of players, who given their chance ,will not let the team down. There is some real talent there and a massive thank you to Paul Warne. UTM.

I agree with all of the above and have felt proud to be a supporter since 1961.

One fly in the ointment though. I don't get to many away games, but was in London last Tuesday so joined the 162 Millers fans in one end of the Gordon Road stand at the Priestfield Stadium. During the second half, we missed a couple of good chances. This led to a tirade of drunken abuse being directed towards a couple of our individual players from a small minority of the Millers fans. The seating arrangements were such that the players must have heard at least some of the vile and offensive comments. I was at Kingsmeadow earlier in the season when the same thing happened after Wimbledon's third goal. As Oliver Cromwell said in 1650 when his army marched to Scotland: Do not trust the cheering, for those persons would shout as much if you or I were going to be hanged.

I really enjoyed yesterday's game and endorse all of the above....

Nomatter what happens next it's a good season and much better than most of us dreamed....

I also like the fact that now he can rest a few players so they are fresh for the semi finals, and those coming in will want to impress to play for a place.

All of the other teams in the playoffs, I would suggest, fear us most...

I'm off on hols for two weeks and excited that when I get back I'll be straight into the playoffs !!!

UTM :)

Those same morons at Barnsley away were shocking. The whole squad and management team were assaulted. Now in the good old days these lads would definately be "sorted" - but sadly - according to the above report they still exist.

I always feel saddened when an over exuberant fan gets a ban.....but these BOYS need to be educated / isolated and banned.

Would like to see Wiles. Warney can't fault him. Just pick the best side on merit when we need to win a game. Would then play Smith & Lavery up front. Still think Forde is the best right winger at the club, would have Mattock if fit in for Purrington unless the latter can get forward more. But not got a problem with Purrington. Would be Towell or Palmer in midfield with Vaulks. If Towell is fit got to be.

The fighters are the team to pick with the "flair" players to be used as impact subs. So that's Taylor in front of Ball for example. Forde & Newal also short on the tackling front but fabulous against a tiring defence - sadly we've not got that strength in depth - so we have to compromise somewhere.

Play a bit of Black Sabbath in the dressing room before the match....

"I am IRON MAN" should do it!

In all honesty I can say that my view on Paul Warne hasn't waive red much.

Early doors he was tactically naive but has, as has already been stated, got streetwise. I think the best lesson was dished out to him by Paul Hurst when their 10 men scored a late winner. This caused a reflection and analysis and I think the penny started dropping.

When Ritchie Barker came to his aid, I think his experience took Warne and the team up to a.better standard.

My original prediction was 8th so I'm over the moon with 4th.

If we go up, this current team would get trounced though. So if we go up, Paul and Ritchie will be fearing for their jobs by October.

I wish everyone well, but know this. The gap between this league and the championship is the biggest in football in my opinion.

To underline your point Heman :

Relegated from the Championship 2017 : Blackburn / Wigan / Rotherham

 League 1 top four 2018 includes : Blackburn / Wigan / Rotherham

It is a big gap, we only need look at the table.  Wigan, Blackburn and us in 1st,2nd & 4th.

The revenue of the play offs is very much needed, especially if we can make Wembley.  We do need to have a go though, but strangely I think will be just meh if we don't go all the way, rather than when we lost against R&D which was a huge disappointment.  Beating Orient we obviously had no idea of what was coming - this time we do, so I hope the board are thoroughly prepared for both scenarios and lessons have been learned.

I genuinely didn't realise that the top 4 places contained the three relegated sides. I won't be one bit upset if we don't go up. If we do then it will be on merit but we'd need to invest in order to have a chance.

I think we'll find a way to bottle following our planned demise from the championship last year - and it was planned !

As soon as PW was given the reigns we were gone. He played his bessie-mate Wood at the centre of defence - then played "football" or tried to within a league that could eat us alive and it did.

Wood has found his level ( and still struggles ).

So - I think ( somehow ) we'll maximise the financial benefits and give the championship a pass. My worry is that is it !

The 3 year plans were rejected before they had a chance to work....so TS has done his marketing - the typical Rotherham fan enjoys this league - despite the poor standard of football - because we are less poor than most of the other teams - I say "less poor" because the chances we offer other clubs to score and the chances we miss ( that "better" teams would not do ) - better teams would deprive our attack and punish our defence.

The towel will be thrown in when we put Yates on the pitch again....he's a PW type player but league two at the very best having struggled on previous loan spells.

I enjoyed the Bristol game and thought every player did well....but ghe team spirit and organisation needs to be at Clough Senior level and - managerialy - we ain't got a Mr Clough and the players Forest had were generally just better!

The odds favour a cautious attitude because we are up against it in football terms - my caution is based on the philosophy and business plan of the club as a whole. We didn't have an acceptable budget the last time we graced the championship - I can't see a Huddersfield type push budget - although - laughingly - some fans thought our budget was similar....never in a month of Sundays.

Warne has done a tremendous job.

By the time he took over in The Championship we were shot. The players weren't good enough for the division and any confidence they might had was long gone. It was mission impossible.

League One is a much lower standard, but all the same we have seen clubs not be able to recover from Championship relegation and slide through it to League Two. It is happening right now in Milton Keynes. A decent season in League One was not a guarantee for us.

I don't know whether we have a top five budget or not, but for sure Warne has had limited backing. Proctor and Palmer were inexpensive. The Ward money never really materialised. We lost Proctor early. Moore was a real bonus but he was taken from us and replaced by a striker who was getting stick at bottom of the league Bury for not scoring goals. We also lost our influential captain along the way.

Essentially Warne has had limited resources and has managed to take his inherited collection of players with damaged confidence, prune them a bit, add a couple of inexpensive signings and loanees and turn us into a fourth placed team that is full of spirit, wins far more than it loses and scores plenty of goals in the process. To me he has shown more management skills than someone who starts with a clean slate and a fat cheque book.

As for the future. We are a relatively small club by Championship standards. Whether you measure it by financial turnover, stadium size, average attendance or anything else we are up against it. And although Mr Stewart backs us and we should be grateful and glad of that backing, we don't have a Chinese consortium or billionaire Russian to bankroll us. So if we go back up it will be very, very difficult to compete and stay there. If we get there, I hope that this time round the supporters will accept that reality and not start behaving like neanderthals and hurling vile abuse and insults at the team and the management if we are bottom three and losing. Better to accept the reality, give it the best go we can without risking the very future of the club and stick together.

Well said and all very true but.....

The circle of life starts over - IF - we go up we will have to play the technical football of survival like we tried to do under AS because he knew we had to do that. He instantly identified that Smallwood was not the player to move the ball as a counter attacking force and brought in Izzy. He also identified Wood as far too slow and didn't play him.

WE didn't like the tactics of low possession and Ward scoring from Izzy breaks WE HATED IT....

Strangely Burnley have survived a few seasons doing the very same thing - beating the likes of Liverpool having had 28% of possession.

So what do we do if we get into the championship.....We'll the answer is the same as Barnsley ( who copied our business plan ) become a yo-yo team.....but without changing the culture of the club like Burnley have - playing technical counter-attacking football and sticking with a long term manager who knows!

I guess we'll cross that bridge when ( if ) we come to it.....
