I reckon 4 wins to be sure but probably 3 wins would be enough.
3 wins would put us on 74 points
That would mean Peterborough or Plymouth to both win 6 out of 8 games to get ahead of us, not impossible, but unlikely.
Charlton really would have to win 6 out of 8 at least.
So, Home wins against Peterborough (in itself a 6 pointer), Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers ought to be enough - with the Blackpool home game hopefully not needed.
Any other points pick up would be a bonus, but we need to be winning our home games... starting with Mr Evans lads....
With defending like that - against forwards who are in the least competent - we will struggle. Playing open football now is crackers....
Be hard to beat now with clean sheets the priority. Two holding midfielders protecting the twin centre halves - root one football with Smith and Ball feeding off him...
We have to try and not lose. Keeping a clean sheet would be useful. Can't see it myself. Opposition teams will try and wear us down from the off. We've got to stop the silly errors and cut out the soft goal****ting the back of our net.
I said right back before Xmas these daft mistakes may be our undoing. Recently SE said this team isn't as good as the one we went up with last time and for once I agree. We do have more flair about us though (potentially), rather than the no risk percentage football that did it last time.
It's the same for all teams right now involved in something, as Warney stated in the Star. This is the business end and you find out if your players have that extra 1 or 2% that will be the difference between success and not. Plus a bit of luck. For all that Revs couldn't hit a barn door, the Wembley goal says it all, that's the extra 1 or 2%.
Preston lost out to us last time who were in my opinion not only better technically, stronger, better equiped and had a better manager plus a goal scorer. They had to wait another season but through that they've had more longevity in the championship (while I know other factors also contribute to that).
The fact is, we're here and it's in our own hands and in most people's minds that in itself is already a successful season. We're yet to see how much culling has gone on in the accounts and budget, but on the face of it it's significant and needed to be. When you factor that in to where we are just says what a great job Warney and his staff are doing with the resources at their disposal. They can coach them, get them match ready, give the players the information and guidance they need, but when they cross the white line it is down to them. The only people that can legislate for the mistakes is the individuals themselves, but for most they're young and again it's up to them to deal with and then learn from it.
I hope we make the play offs as more than anything we need the money, the young players will become better from the experience good or bad. I also think it will be a just reward for Warney in particular no matter what happens. I'm sure he'll be pleased as punch walking us out into that great stadium. We don't get any of that if we finish 7th and it will be a real shame.
Good post Ex. I would be very surprised if we didn't make the play-offs - the wheels would have to come off big style and the chasing bunch would have to have extraordinary run-ins. A win today against Fleetwood could almost guarantee our spot if other results go in our favour. On the subject of SE's side v PW's, I think there's little to chose between them in overall quality. We focus on Ajayi's defensive frailties but I remember many an occasion when Kari Arnason got the heart racing - particularly when he was facing our own goal! SE's side had a great finish to the season, whereas PW is struggling to get us back to winning ways. The key today is getting an early goal and lifting the confidence levels. If Forde would have put his one-on-one away against Peterborough, I think we would have won that one comfortably. No need for panic yet but it's a good day for a comfortable win!
A clean sheet would be great... but I've never been convinced with sitting back. I'd prefer us to go-for-it today and press and press and hope we score more than them...
We've made mistakes at the back lately as stated above, but we've also wasted a lot of decent chances, Peterborough game being a case in point where we should have had 3 or more before they scored.
So, let's hope our luck changes and we start to get our shooting boots on today and get out of sight...
But over committed teams get bitten as we have - so cavalier football is a no no - put hunting in packs ( pairs at least ) when we don't have the ball but keep it when we do. THEN we can build !
Palmer ran the show and we should have been clear by half time. Liked everything about the team except for defending balls into the box. Also thought Forde wasn't bad today.
I was there. Palmer said it from day 1, bad signing. Didn't see nothing from him all the game. Ball again no threat. When I saw Emmanuel coming on thought it was to put Vaulks with Towell in midfield but Warney bottled it. Though Vaulks played a lot better at Centre back. Up till then we weren't in the game. After our 3rd goal had chances to increase our lead. Rodak will never be a keeper till he can catch the ball when it's his from corners ect... but he's only keeper we've got so got to accept that for this season. Newell our star man. Smith didn't do bad.
I think you are a pointless troll but if you didn't see Palmer run the middle of the park today then you are blind. He's a quality player.
Your pointless full stop. Is there any football men on this site? Anybody can see Palmer has nothing to his game. He has no strength, can't tackle. No forward movement. Somebody tell me different.
Palmer and towell best players on pitch
Ball tried
Smith ran his socks off
T71 I don't why u have it in for Palmer he will our new frecks watch this space

Towell yes but Palmer not the holding midfielder we need. Can't have those two in midfield at Wigan. Said Smith played well. Ball think it's time to give Lavery a start.
Palmer was my man of the match - he not only ran the midfield with Towell, but he put his head in where it hurts late on to quell two dangerous situations. Fleetwood were a well organised side, difficult to break down, but patience paid off in the end. Didn't like the decision to drop Emmanuel. Team played much better with Vaulks at CB - he has to play there for rest of season. Purrington did well. I'd like to see us go with someone else alongside Smith whose excellent work is not being made the most of by Ball. Perhaps Lavery? Tense day but happy!
Glad of another win, as Warney says not really about performances at this stage it's doing what is necessary to win. Off to Wigan next week, looking forward to that as it's a ground I've not had chance to visit. Not expecting anything, but if we can win Brizzle and Blackpool at home, really that should be enough. Hoping for Plymouth in the play offs so me and my lad can go!
