I noticed an interesting thread on MM asking if we were promoted, which players could play in the Championship.
Obviously personal opinions differ greatly in what some people see from certain players but, using a more factual stat, I wondered how much experience we already had in the Championship by looking at how many appearances the players already had.
One or two surprising numbers?
All figures purloined off WIKI (So apologies if not 100% correct ).
Rodak - None Emmanual - 19 Mattock - 192 Vaulks - 40 Ajayi - 17 Wood - 272 Ihiekwe -None ***mins - ? (No data on WIKI) Forde - 44 Palmer - ? (No data on WIKI) Taylor - 42 Ball - 22 Potter - 166 Towell - 1 Purrington - 10 Newell - 113 Williams - 22 Proctor - 6 Smith - None Yates - 22
In the event we get into the championship how many of our current squad would be good enough. We could only in our budget be able to bring say a max' of around 10 players in. Way I see it:
Rodak yes Price no
Emmanuel & ***mings both no
Ajayi yes Dom Ball yes
Ihiewke & Wood both no
Mattock & Purrington both yes
Forde no
Taylor & Williams both yes
Vaulks, Towell & Palmer all yes Potter no
Newell yes
Smith, Ball, Lavery & Yates all no Proctor yes
JCH, Bailey-King & Wiles all yes

I'm not sure that it's a matter of whether or not individuals are likely to cut it in the Championship. Whether the 'team' can cut it is far more important. We've all seen examples of sides littered with stars failing to blend into a competent team. If the squad has the right cohesion, work ethic and desire, individual ability is not a primary issue; although I admit it helps. If we can keep the core of our squad together, ditch the deadwood (JCH and Dom Ball to name a couple) and bring in 3-4 players of Championship quality, we have every chance of maintaining a Championship status.
If it happens we should go in with this team and 3 or 4 additions - team spirit is a big deal and also we haven't dumped a load of cash on championship cast offs that we have to deal with on the drop. Let's just go and have a crack at it with this team and if we come back down so what. We can get promoted again!

I would keep Rodak, Emmanuel ( should he wish to stay at NYS), Yates and also the enigmatic Jonson Clarke-Harris. The latter, lest we forget, is still on loan at Coventry City. This is not by any means a wind up merely an observation particularly about JCH. His current loan spell at Coventry may settle the debate as to whether he can cut the mustard as a professional footballer. I know some who post on this board may be stunned by my current assessment of JCH. I say let's see how he develops, or otherwise at Coventry. The end of season stats about his progress, or otherwise, will reveal much more about his strengths and/or weaknesses as a team player. I'm prepared to keep my powder dry and not write him off totally.
Emmanuel not mobile enough for a full back, slow to turn. Any not playing regular in league 1 have no chance in the championship. JCH jury is out, he was never given a chance by Warney. Wood & Potter are on there last legs. Bailey-King could be anything but I trust my judgement. I saw something in him last game of last season.

Clarke-Harris will be out of contract with us at the time his loan at Coventry ends. The only influence we have on his contract situation (as I understand it) is that because of his age if we offer him a new contract on no less favourable terms than his current one and he rejects it to sign somewhere else, we are entitled to a fee to be determined by a tribunal if it can't be agreed. But he has no market value in any case.
I hope he does well wherever he goes but he isn't ever going to play for us again. Why are we still talking about him? Same with Dominic Ball.
Is Darnelle Bailey-King still a footballer? Where has he been since his loan spell at North Ferriby ended? With all due respect to the lad, what in heavens name makes anyone think he is a Championship standard player?
Let's not forget the Premiership loans that will be an invaluable market place IF the Premiership team have faith in our management team....that will be a indicator of how they are assessed by their Premiership peers.
Just read the thread on MM that Archie referred to in the o/p. People seem to think we have ten or more players in the current squad who are good enough for the Championship. It is delusional thinking. Borderline insane. How short are peoples memories? The players we still have who were miles off the pace last season are suddenly rated as being top drawer and fit for Championship purpose. This is one of the biggest problems that we have - managing expectations. I am serious when I say that the current side - as well as they are doing and all credit to them - would get pummelled over 46 games in the Championship. The better players in our team are players who can't or couldn't get in Championship sides. Wake up people!
^^^ totally agree. People should watch not what we do, but what we get away with. A Champ team would regularly bag 3-4 and more against us. We are currently where we are because technically we are better than most, but this is way short of what it takes to be in the Championship. In the past this has been offset (RM, SE and NW), with grit steel and sheer thunder. It works but is sapping and not a long term solution.
Blades got over 100 points in this league because they were so technically superior a lot of that is good enough for the Champ, and that's why they haven't ripped too much up. Everyone knows we're a long way off Blackburn and Wigan, not just on the field but with infrastructure and what's behind them.
I really don't see how on earth we can ever get anywhere near being like that other than a VERY long term building project, and I'm talking 20-30 years!
"People should watch not what we do, but what we get away with"
That's precisely why I say we are flattered by our league position and the quality on offer in the league is poor.
The goal we get - we wouldn't and the chances we offer would be taken - in a better league....and that's why the next tier scares me to death.
Just a personal reason the jubilation is difficult for me because ( as an old player ) I leave the NYS thinking how did we get those points...any "quality" and we're toast in both penalty areas.
These lists of "championship" players are optimistic to say the least and although "the collective" - the "team" performance is very important - when push comes to shove - each player will have their own battles they must win to win a game....
We need more "quality"....Premiership loans anyone....

Are you really a Miller? You always seem to bring the club down and give the impression you may just be an infiltrator which is very sad.
