In the long unbeaten run there were times we didn't play well but ground out some results and managed to keep picking up points. Oldham away and Doncaster at home for example we were pretty poor and rode our luck at times. We weren't world beaters then and we aren't terrible now all of a sudden. We need to keep some perspective, take a deep breath and try and finish the season well.
I think we have become a bit one-dimensional. It sounded again tonight like the team in the bottom four was playing whatever bright football was on view.
Dear oh dear, I've listened to Radio Sheffield's commentary & the performance seemed nowhere near good enough. Seems like Semi & Woody are making the same basic errors that they were making around Oct/Nov & as earlier in the season we look at our most vulnerable after we've conceded. The defeat was coming on Saturday ending the run but it's how you react to that defeat & on the evidence of tonight we haven't reacted well. Automatic promotion is gone now (it was never really there) & our playoff place will be in jeopardy if we continue to defend deep & give the opposition too much respect.
Tell the truth I'm not actually surprised we've lost 2 on the bounce to the near enough bottom 2 teams, nothing is a gimme in football these days. We've been good for a couple of months, crap for a couple then very good for a couple - it's just balance.
Play offs will still be a very very good season if we make it all things considered, then it's cup football and anybody's to take.
Still in a good place as long as we can start picking up points again in next two games, otherwise it might impact confidence and we'll lose our 'cushion' of points in playoff zone..
Seen the goals, Warney will def be pointing out what went wrong, Vaulks and Wood claiming offsides when they were the ones keeping players on, strikers getting in between Wood and Ajayi, basic stuff, Ajayi not staying goal side of his man for the 3rd, basic stuff. Just a catalogue of basic error goals, hopefully to occur all in one game so we can get back to where we were. You can't concede 3 in any game of football at most levels and expect to win a football match. Learn, move on, don't repeat
That will never change due to the calibre of the players we have broke the bank on ! You get what you pay for.
As a coach - you want to affect your players actions....but let's be honest these mistakes are junior football "mistakes" and the now physical inadequacy of Wood.
Semi looks like Bambino on ice at times and - sorry coach - these mistakes are terminal and if they are not second nature now - at this level - then Lord help us!
Another bad day at the office, I do not name names when players have bad ones so, I will just say that 6 or 7 players were poor and another couple, were very, very poor! In saying that, we still had chances to have nicked it. Palmer looked composed and played well when he came on.
My silver lining driving home was this regarding the last nine games. If we had won three, lost one, won four, lost one, we still would have still picked up 21 points out of a possible 27 and most people would have been happy (or happier?). Unfortunately, losing two on the bounce to teams in the bottom three after 7 straight wins leaves you feeling different and thinking the bubble may have burst?
You did well Archie ! 12.45 when we get home. This happens too frequently at night on the M1. Thought last night's performance was disgraceful with only Rodak and Mattock coming out with any credit. Other teams have realised that if they play quick and mobile central midfielders they can easily take the slow Towell and incredibly slow and stiff Vaulks out of the game and beat Rotherham. There were glaring weaknesses (***mings,Lavery who on evidence to date is not up to much and Smith) and unacceptable lazy displays eg Newell which should not be tolerated. Palmer for whom we have paid good money cannot get a game yet appears to be miles better skilfully than any other midfielder and Williams whose pace is sorely missed has (I was told last night) issues with the management team. It looked like MK had Gareth Bale on the left side,so inept was ***mings! If the rank bad Northampton turn us over the play off points advantage we have will soon be whittled away. I fear a spanking by Mr Evans on Good Friday. I don't think he would allow players to thieve a wage as many did last night. The next few games will give an indication of how tactically capable our manager is. On current form we would certainly get beat by anybody in the play offs if we manage to hang in there.
I shouldn't have a go at players, who obviously try their best. But this comes down to a wage versus ability thing. I can only guess what some nameless players are earning - 1-2k a week? I dunno, but even for that the frequent and basic mistakes are not, in my mind, in line with professional players earning this amount, and day in day out high quality coaching and resources at their disposal. It is almost embarassing. I don't pretend they should be robots, far from it, even relatively young age for me is not an excuse. To keep doing rank bad things over and over again really is not acceptable. In any other line of work they'd have been sacked for incompetence. I truly wonder how some people make the grade to become pro footballers I really do.
