Interesting experiment on OT

Apologies for mentioning MM but I come neither to praise nor condem that site.  I have just noted that the mods' experiment in anti-democracy (ie asking members to vote and then effectively ignoring the stated wishes of 79% of them) has had the predictable effect.  The 5 or 6 OT posts moved from the main board have not received a single new comment for 5 days.  It does go to show I think that despite some members' reservations a single board with non-footy stuff simply marked OT will generate more traffic than a separate OT board.  If MM expand the "experiment" I think a few people will pack the site in.

I contemplated a single board when I set this up, but then wondered why traffic is needed?

MM needs traffic to show those horrible ads (which most people block)

There are no ads on here

There is no way MM will split it, and even if they did once they realise the impact they'll put it back again

You make a very fair point and it's really not for me to comment and I would not ever wish to suggest changes that might annoy other members.  I simply feel OT is misunderstood and undervalued.  If used in the right way - ie avoiding the endless political nastiness - it keeps people involved when there's nothing much to say on the football.  I know Sickly and Towdlad valued it and before he left some of Andy's stuff was brilliant.

I think you have to ask what are you trying to create? - a board for footy talk etc or an online community of millers fans?

Millersmad the name tends to suggest the former and not the latter, which then also lends to the idea they'll pretty much do anything to ramp up the numbers for those precious ad impressions, which someone is profiting nicely from.

Saw some prof guy from Oxford or somewhere saying about Social Media, it's purpose is not to bring people together blah blah its to create numbers for ads. The more people that wake up and realise our online activity is all for ad purposes the better.

We are sleep walking into a Idiocracy world (its a movie)

Interesting.  I read once that the concept of "fashion" in clothing was not driven by the consumer's desire to change their style of dress on a regular basis nor was it driven by the clothing industry.  It was driven by the needs of newspaper fashion editors to constantly have something new to write about.

Well, it seems I have influence on MM from afar.  Frogmiller has read this thread and decided to drop the experiment in anti-democracy.  blankstare

I must admit I only tend to look in on the football side of the site and rarely on here; laziness I suppose. But at any rate I do value the contributions made by all, although I am reluctant to get involved too much because there are many issues effecting todays society that I get quite annoyed and sometime angry about. Also I am not particularly articulate and sometimes struggle to properly express what I mean, or get my point across, so I tend to stay football focused. A shame really as I do have quite a bit to say on many issues but reluctant to do so.

I think we're a quite accepting bunch of other people's views and understanding we all don't have the same position on here
