Don't know if anyone ever listens to Talksport? I quite like "The Two Mikes", the Georgie Bingham and Tony Cascarino show and I will listen to a match commentary on Sundays. However, what has struck me is the pervasiveness of encouragement to bet on Talksport. Not only do we have constant adverts, but the hypocritical presenters do their "noble" charity bets and every aspect of football is reduced to gambling odds. Pundits discuss upcoming games almost purely in betting terms. And we get the presenters after all this encouragement to gamble ending every section with a pathetic "Please remember to gamble responsibly" or "When the fun stops, stop."
I am forced to listen to Talksport occasionally because I do some work in an office where the others have it on in the background quite a lot. To be honest I can't stand it. I think it is London-centric, and 'chummy' in a way that puts Sky to shame and they are bad enough with it. They sensationalise whatever they can, and big up themselves and their stories of the day shamelessly. It is all a bit vacuous. I couldn't care less what Perry Groves and Bob Mills think about anything.
The way Talksport treated the story about Gordon Taylor and his salary a couple of weeks ago was scandalous. Jim White gave a very slanted initial coverage of it making it very clear where he stood personally, and then lambasted the PFA for not coming on the show to talk about it. I couldn't blame them. They were on a hiding to nothing, and I wouldn't have trusted White to do a professional job with any interview. He had already declared his hand.
The pundits are self-serving - part of the 'football family' and unlikely to rock the boat too much. I see them all as part of the circus that is top level football, all making a living out of not very much. No doubt betting is a massive part of modern sport - no serious efforts to curb it - and Sky and Talksport and the rest of them are happy to take the money and play the game.
Because I only listen to the Two Mikes (Mike Parry is Everton) and Georgie Bingham (Ipswich) I hadn't picked up on the London-centric bit. Can't stand that White bloke and would happily shoot Durham and the appalling berk Gough. The whole thing gets football way out of proportion. Does anyone really care if the hapless Pardew gets sacked (again)?
Their angle on the Gordon Taylor story was to get an opinion from Steve Parrish, the Crystal Palace Chairman who is reportedly in business with his former player Glenn Murray and Glenn Murray's agent.
He was taking offence that Taylor gets a salary that the PFA Board approved and presumably the members he serves are happy with (they can vote him out if not). What the hell has that got to do with Palace's Chairman?
Did White expect a club Chairman to defend the PFA Chief?
I like 5 Live too. Mark Chapman is good and I prefer their match coverage. Still think the Two Mikes are OK. One guy who always gets me reaching for the off buttom on TV or Radio is Ian Wright. A complete muppet.
Robbie Savage can disappear off the airwaves for me, and take Chris Sutton with him. They both talk out of their backsides. In Savages case I think he says what he thinks but he is clueless. In Suttons case I get the impression that he tries very hard to be controversial.
I am warming to Jermaine Jenas. I saw his contribution recently when he was talking with Gerrard and McManaman on BT Sport about the difference between top level players and good club players, and it was put to him that he might have played for England more if he had played for one of the really big top four or five clubs of the day instead of second tier (which Spurs and Newcastle were while he was there). He wasn't having it. He basically said that he takes personal responsibility for his own career and that basically his standards and work ethic were not as good as the likes of Gerrard or Lampard. He was refreshingly candid and insightful.
