I don’t really class any local teams as rivals, I’m sure I’m in a minority with that!
I’m up for beating any and all teams, but it is sometimes a little sweeter if it’s a local side. Outside of that I tend to want all local teams to do well.... if I had to choose, I’d prefer to beat Wednesday of all local sides as they are probably the bigger club but I’d love to see either sheff side in the premier league as it would make MOTD a little more interesting.
I'm same, PL not been same without a plucky Barnsley, Blades. Don't want owls in there - the massiveitus would take on epidemic proportions.
Local rivals are rooted by that at one time players were local and people supported their home club. This identity has been ever eroded. I like to beat certain teams over others, but wouldn't say anyone is a rival - all teams are just someone to take 3 points or a cup place from. I suppose I can say that as I don't have to work with supporters of other local teams. I don't think there's been such a fierce rivalry as when both Sheff clubs were in the top flight regularly playing each other in league and cup - and that's a shame, they made for great games.
There is a certain amount of arrogance about Wednesday that gets under my skin a bit and prevents me from wanting them to do well.
But they can't really be our biggest rivals because they are a big club from a big city. It is nice to turn them over every now and again. Goals like the McBride, Garner and Barker winners at Hillsborough will always be part of our folklore.
I like the Blades. I was with them for a while as a kid and did ball boy duties a lot. Like many millions of others I wasn't quite good enough to make it as a pro player. If RUFC had gone bust when we threatened to, I would be following them.
At the end of the day, we can't compete with the rivalry they have with each other. We are to them what Burton are to Forest and Derby.
I think of Doncaster and Barnsley as our big rivals. Similar size towns, all in South Yorkshire, proper football clubs, similar fan bases, and we have spent a lot of time over the years at the same sort of level so play them a lot.
I don't mind Donny at all apart from wanting to beat them when we play them. The same goes for Barnsley. I think of it as a healthy rivalry on the day.
