It is quite baffling to me to work out what goes on in some people’s heads to think they have the right to scream at our own players,
‘ You’re effing Sh!t, you effing w…nker’, all this in front of women and children and other supporters who were there to support the team and not verbally abuse them.
What on earth makes them think this is an acceptable reaction in front of other people in a public place, whatever the result or performance?
…As stated earlier, totally embarrassing
On the game itself :
IMO, the first half performance was one of the best I have seen for a number of seasons but, after their management stopped the supply to our wingers in the second half (which was good play by them), the second half was poor and just fizzled out from our point.
I've got an eleven year old who goes to the occasional home game but won't travel away with my eldest and I (and in fact I wouldn't take her if she asked). The reason - the two away games she has seen were a 3-2 defeat at MKDons (a game when I think O'Connor got a red card) when two groups of RUFS supporters fought each other in the seats just behind us, and the game at Barnsley when Stubbs got vile abuse as we left the stand. On both occasions she was absolutely terrified. I agree that every club has a minority of these morons. We certainly have at least our fair share.
Why I don't overly like going to football matches anymore, especially experiencing what you get at the Steelers. Not only is it embarrassing - I don't want to be labelled as part of it.
There was a time I went up and down the country, we had a club reputation that we were a noisy but jovial bunch - that was nice - but this has gone with big time charley elder teens / early 20s thinking we're summat massive cos we have a nice stadium (and also probably what these people have only experienced - not DVS and certainly not Millmoor).
TBH I don't go to many Millers away games but I went to Crewe & I was astonished how many Millers fans in the ground who were so drunk they could hardly speak never mind sing. Atrocious language in front of the many children who were in the stand also.
Can't see the attraction personally, could be that they were holding their own " who can be the biggest neandethal" competition.
Horses for courses, and I understand that it is family friendly and they do a great job of that, but having been a few times I find the Steelers experience a bit too artificial and transplanted-from-the-USA for my liking.
It might be nostalgia kicking in, but when I was between 18 and say 30 I used to go to a lot of away games and have a beer or two and probably behave in a way that would make me cringe now, but I always knew that there were boundaries. I was never as out of it as you describe Brad (and I have seen a lot of them too), and certainly not as aggressive as the idiots we are talking about.
Its a mob mentality isn't it that makes people think they can behave in a football crowd in a way that they would never behave otherwise. The police are happy to tolerate it provided it is controlled in a small space that they can manage. It is plain wrong.
Went to the Brighton away match last year and sat amongst about 200 Miller's max. Game was ruined for me not by the result but by a shaven headed late teen screaming See You Next Tuesday (the orher word) at every opportunity - embarrassed to be part of them.
I'm going Saturday with my 15 year old and we will have a great day Len. Just got to expect a few idiots, shake your head and sigh inwardly, and take it for what it is. Apparently around 3600 sold as of today, so it should be a great atmosphere.
I've never been put off by travelling to away games. In fact some of the drunken behaviour I've witnessed over the years at away games has been quite amusing, sad but amusing. Some of the drunks don't know who's playing or the names of the players on the pitch. It's their idea of a good day out though. They're 'happy in the haze of a drunken hour'.....to quote some lyrics from a Morrissey song.
The shine was taken off the day a bit by the idiots from both clubs who went at each other before the game in town and afterwards on the road that led away from the ground towards town. These were (on both sides) mainly twenty-ish year olds. It was more than just shouting and there were reasonable numbers involved. There were plenty who would have run at the first hint of real bother, but a few were clearly up for it. It would have been ugly without the handful of police who were there (and horses) sorting it out.
A special mention must go to the mindless millers morons who were throwing half bricks and bottles into a mixed group of innocent supported from both sides which included a number of very frightened children.
I know this sort of thing has gone on for years. To be honest, personally I don't mind if the k**bheads on both sides want to kick seven shades of it out of each other on some waste ground somewhere. Just don't drag innocent decent people and their children into it.
Surely the club gets feedback from the police? No doubt this sort of drunken thuggery is creeping back in. The club could do worse than make a public statement condemning it and/or working with the police to shame people by publicising images of those involved. They were all being filmed. Get people prosecuted and banned.
Thought the crowd in the ground were excellent and it was a poor showing from Doncaster who had half empty stands. We took about 4000 and the 50 morons are a small % of this and deserve to be banned for life if caught behaving as you describe.
