We have conceded three goals in each of the last three games, and anyone who saw the Scunny game will know that on another day they could easily have scored two or three. At times they ripped us apart.
This isn't one of those moans just because we have lost a game. I am still pleasantly surprised with the start we have made this season and there are positives to take from it. The defence is however a concern, because we still concede very soft goals and look too easy for good teams to get at.
What to do about it?
Personally I prefer O'Donnell to Rodak for a start. He was the main reason Scunny didn't score and he came to get everything crossed into the box. He did nothing wrong at Wimbledon then got left out.
The centre backs are getting stick, but defending set pieces isn't just their job and in open play too many crosses are finding their way into the box. If they keep coming in, sooner or later a striker will get on the end of one.
I would stick with Ihiekwe. You know what you are going to get from Wood but he has obvious limitations.
For me Joe Mattock's concentration levels aren't good enough and the red card on Saturday came as no surprise. It was coming from ten minutes before it happened, and we could still have salvaged a point until his red mist descended. Totally unprofessional. He isn't so good that we need to overlook that sort of nonsense.
Right back, I prefer ***mings to Emmanuel but not a strong preference. I just think he defends marginally the better of the two.
The two players not mentioned above are Purrington and Ajayi. They concern me most of all. The two of them were brought in as young players with potential - part of our drive to identify new talent and bring it on. Both struggled with life in the Championship but that wasn't too surprising in a side that was out of its depth. I really hoped that this season in League One, they would both claim regular starting places and start to show their worth. The truth is they have both been disappointing when they have played. Ajayi can't get in ahead of Wood, and even when fit Purrington was usually behind Mattock in the pecking order. As examples of our new recruitment regime neither is really a glowing success. Hopefully they will still come good with time.
Personally I think we are too strong to struggle this season but not good enough to go up and I also think it would be disastrous longer term if we did go up too soon. On that basis, we don't have a lot to lose so get Ajayi in there playing games and lets see what he is made of. The same with Purrington when fit. They won't be learning by sitting on the bench. Neither are kids - they have both played plenty of football now. Get them in.
The last point to make is that we can take pressure off the defence by keeping the ball better when we have it. Too often we give it away cheaply - often by going too long to Moore too soon.
Both full back positions are still a major worry. Two red cards for Mattock already & it's only October tells it's own story. He's the best we've got & with the disappointing Purrington currently injured we may have to rely on young Akeem Hines at LB.
Emmanuel & ***mings have been disappointing, Vaulks can fill in but he's not a natural RB, they are the areas that should be a January priority. I agree the CB's have made mistakes but they're L1 defenders & Ihewke & Ajayi are still learning their trade & will improve. I like Wood, yeah he's slow & can make mistakes but he's a leader & you always get a shift out of him, the good out ways the bad IMO. I'm also concerned about PW's choice of keeper. O'Donnell for me every time rather than Mr Punch who could go back to Craven Cottage now for me but he needs cover. Price will never play for us again I'm told (good because he's rubbish), young Bilboe never seems to get a shout (even in the Checkatrade) so PW can't hold him in high regard.
Anyroad that's my fivepenneth..........................................
I reckon Smiler's final point is the most important of all. Our midfield was over-run on Saturday and this puts immense pressure on the back four. Without the ability to break down play before it reaches the danger areas, we are always going to be vulnerable. Frecklington's absence and Potter not being 100% fit (I suspect) leaves us light in this area and it has to be one of Warne's key concerns moving into the January transfer window.
Looking at the goals conceded against Gillingham - the first is an error from Moore in not making the clearing header, the second is down to Newell losing the ball in a dangerous area and the third is down to Mattock for being a total imbecile. Rather than the quality of individual players, I reckon the key rests in a good defensive coach and I trust this is high on TS and PW's wish list.
Accept that defending is a team responsibility but it doesn't excuse the fact that our back four are repeatedly beaten for headers. Wood is like a lump of concrete with his best days well behind him. I don't think there is a decent defender at the club but we must give Ajayi the chance to prove he has potential. Warne's lack of tactical nous is worryingly becoming increasingly obvious not only to us supporters but to upcoming opponents. Gillingham showed that we can be bullied into losing.
Said it on Saturday already but I think the issue is in the middle - love Newell as a winger but as a centre midfield player he's hopeless unless we are playing weak opposition. I went to Blackburn away where the game changed once he pulled Newell off the pitch for Towell who is a true centre midfield player. Same Saturday too many times arms on hips and out of position- Frecks is busy and always on the hunt for a goal by bombing on beyond Moore. Needs Towell and Vaulks in there with Joe on the left and Taylor on the right swapping over whenever they feel like It.
Defence is put under pressure but a collapsing midfield.
i totally agree with the above posts i didnt go to the match saturday
but for mein goal odonnell has a mistake in him like all goalies , but when he came back when ( mr punch) rodak was on international duty he played really well and seems to have suffered for the wimbledon game
defence i would play ***mings right back all time emmanuel isnt our player
iheikwe should be starter but who to play with him both wood and ayayi have their positives and negatives
again why send dom ball on loan as it reduces his options for defence
left back mattock when he is on his game is good but thats rare for a full 90 mins and thats now 3 red cards he has had playing for us
purring ton needs to get his act together and make mattock play for his shirt
the mid field has to be potter towell/ frecks with williams and newell on the wings
