we lost that game as soon as they scored heads dropped poor tactics and no fight we are the next yeovil town putting amateurs in charge of the club. 2 wins out of 7 games results speak volumes. yes the referee was awful but that isnt the root cause
Proctor yet again missed an absolute sitter in the 9th minute. If he carries on like that he's not going to win many friends. Ajayi's header should also have gone in - no excuses whatsoever for missing chances like that & at pivotal moments in the game.
Proctor's injury - didn't really see anything wrong, initially, hope he hasn't landed funny and done something nasty to his knee. Terrible of us to switch off and allow a goal like that straight after though, and that's after the horrible goal from the corner.
I though Kettle handled the game pretty well, people need to let it go with him
Warney has a lot of work to do at both ends of the pitch this week!
Terrible of us to switch off and allow a goal like that straight after though, and that's after the horrible goal from the corner.
There seems to be a pattern here……….switching off, losing concentration, etc etc any break in a game appears to be a danger time for us. A couple of weeks ago it was immediately after a substitution, today after an injury and more frequently after a goal against us leading to another goal against us shortly after.
I was hoping for a better start than, I know and don't expect to win em all, but the present situation is worrying.
Harsh OP title. He put the same team out that demolished Southend and was let down by a number of his key players who didn't perform. Charlton were a useful side, good in possession and dangerous on the break. Warne needed his players to press high and hard but today they stood off for the main part. If Proctor scores his easy early chance, it would have been a different game. Semi equally guilty with his header. Disappointed that Vaulks replaced Emmanuel - ideal opportunity to give ***mings an outing. The worse thing about the Proctor injury is that it may force JCH into the opening line up. When he came on he looked totally off the pace, lacked desire and was easily knocked off the ball.
Warne's post match interview on P&G was spot on and he was rightly critical of some players. He needs to be given a chance - he's an intelligent man with loads of football experience. The last thing we need is another change at the helm.
Finally, this week's training needs to comprise crossing, crossing and a bit more crossing. And for goodness sake, keep Taylor away from deadball situations.
On to Portsmouth for our first away win - unless anyone wishes to make me a decent offer for my three tickets!!
Both could be true i.e that missed chances cost us and that Warne hasn't got a clue. Just saying.
It is still way too early to be doom and gloom. I believe that at this stage last season SUFC were without a win and there were people calling in to Praise and Grumble wanting Wilder out (how fickle football fans are).
Having said that there were some worrying signs today.
We ran out of ideas quite early on.
Why have we brought in an experienced right back as cover for Emmanuel, who then sits on the bench watching the hapless Vaulks (who has played about three games there in his life) go on in that position ahead of him?
Proctor seems not to be able to convert chances from inside the six yard area. That is a shame because his contribution otherwise is really good. He is clearly our main man up front and it will be a blow if (as looks likely according to early reports) he is out for a while injured.
Frecklington just doesn't look the player he was, and him and Potter together isn't going to work. Vaulks won't improve us in that area. We are crying out for a box to box midfielder in the mould of the Frecks from four years ago who you knew would get you ten goals a season. Does he look like doing that now? I can't see it. Which I don't enjoy saying because he has been my favourite player of the NYS years.
Once again and sadly Ajayi was found wanting and it resulted in a goal. For the size he is he loses a lot of headers. He has his qualities and I am not advocating binning him off, but we need another option. The last thing we need at the moment is another inexperienced defender. Neither Wood nor Do Ball are the answer. We need someone who isn't past it but who has some miles under the bonnet and who will head it and kick it and shout a lot. A Chris Swailes or Craig Morgan type. I hope the defender we are apparently lining up fits that bill.
I thought a lot of heads went down today and there were players having pops at each other towards the end, and it all looked eerily familiar.

when he got the job i said it was a huge mistake and I sticking to it. 2 wins out of 7, wrap it up how you like if that continues it will be another season like the last. His lack of passion on the touchline his lack of a plan b with like for like subs, a total inability to change a game. As soon as they scored the game was over heads dropped and we kept letting the number 11 destroy us on the wing. Frecks wasnt his normal self and that left us open in midfield. The game needed an extra central midfielder and a proper right back who was sat on the bench. Add to that the awful interview on radio sheffield, no passion again, admission that the players are not doing what they are asked to do we need an experienced manager at this club. If he proves me wrong wonderful but I sense it coukd be another long miserable season.
ditto derbymiller, if you look at the actual win percentage of all our previous managers, Warne must be either at or very near the bottom. He was the cheap & easy option, everybody loves him etc, etc. The guy is utterly clueless, his substitutions are baffling in the extreme, tactically inept (lump it up to Moore/Proctor & see what happens). We'll befacing our FOURTH successive relegation fight if we're not careful.
I couldn't give a monkeys about managers showing passion on the touchline. That is and always has been nonsense in my book. Just like the notion that you always need to go with someone with experience, although when you are in free-fall there is more of an argument for a bit of experience to help steady things. A manager does however need to have some tactical nous and coaching ability.
Charlton were pretty ordinary themselves which makes it even more frustrating that we rolled over.
I never understood the appointment of Paul Warne and I agree with you Derby that his appointment was a big gamble that will prove to be a mistake. My instinct is that Tony will panic and pull the trigger (again) if we don't pick up pretty quickly. By the way, if we've really got a top five budget (whatever that means) we have wasted a shed load of money. We have a lot of very poor players around the place.
Some were with us last season but some are new in. A few have bigged-up well beyond their true ability.
All the signs are that we might be in a lot of trouble.
warne was the cheap option because we owe so much in contracts to other ex-managers. If warne loves the club he shop go and see TS tell him he isnt experienced enough step aside so TS can bring in a experienced man on 12 months rolling contract to steady the ship take us to a midtable position playing some decent football. then some of these silly contracts can be paid up or will be finished and we can reassess for next season to build towards a promotion push. Warne can learn under tge experienced manager and stay part of the management team.
Time for a reality check and a few home truths. I stated on here previously that I didn't want Paul Warne to be given the managers job. Why?Nice Guy but tactically inept, I take no pleasure in being proved right. Evidence Saturday's game plan or lack of it ,no plan B when plan A is patently not working. Solution ?
The reality is that Warne is our manager like it or not and that is not about to change any time soon. One can only hope that his on the job training pays dividends eventually. Should he be given time to improve things?
The answer has to be yes, what's the alternative?, even more instability for our Club.
Now the reality check for the fans. The ones amongst you who thought this division would be easy for the Miller's have had a rude awakening and that's no bad thing. Maybe now the expectations of Miller's fans will become a little more realistic. Would a mid table finish be really that bad after last season's horror show?
The club is in transition whether we like it or not, we have a Chairman prone to making rash statements which is not helpful to anyone least of all the fans and a rookie manager who has a lot to learn.
We are only just into the season, there are a lot of games still to be played. The early signs are not good but are not bad enough to throw us into a mad panic with calls for the managers head. We have to hope that Warne learns from his mistakes and eventually settles in to his role of manager. Transfer business is going to be vital in the next couple of days particularly taking into account Proctors injury and the need to strengthen the defence and central midfield. Mr Stewart's boast about a top four budget has to become reality and not just rhetoric. What we do in this transfer window could well define our Season. Top half to mid-table or bottom half
strugglers. The balls in your court Tony you gave him the job now give him the necessary tools to have at least a fighting chance of doing the job.
Might be a good thing we lost Saturday. A win would have masked our deficiencies. They were all over the pitch. Main weaknesses side we started out with. No leader in Central defence. Two players playing from memory in midfield. No Right hand side with Emmanuel & Williams. Not much better on the left. Keeper not got total confidence in him but would say 3 signings would have to be Centre back, Centre midfield & striker now Proctor is out. Warney hope he's took it all in & plays players on merit from now on. Bench as well, cover in every position.
Of course towd codger is correct in much of what he says, but do we have the time to allow Warne(s) to cut his managerial teeth at the clubs/fans expense ? And the big question for me is WILL he learn from his mistakes ? Thus far I'm not convinced he will ,after all he seems to be making the same mistakes. time after time. i.e. as mentioned in towd codgers post, no plan B when plan A clearly isn't working. Making wrong substitutions or at the wrong time, and players switching off after a break in play and being punished for it and then the heads going down. It makes no difference if we're playing well or not…..a loss is a loss
All reminiscent of last season. If he was going to lean lessons it would have been last season when he did the learning I would have thought. A bit like JCH, if he was going to do anything worth paying to see, he should have done it by now
I may have got this wrong but wasn't that lad ***mings brought in as right back cover, iff he was why the hall put Vaulks on unless he tried to go three at back which we didn't or were unable to because of our obvious defensive weakness , I'm convinced after Saturday Warne has no idea what he is doing or what he wants to do .
Another question had Williams been on last all night as he was unable to mount a jog from first whistle ,reckon it's going to be a long cold winter down at NYS
Baffling that Vaulks went on unless it was just for his long throws which I suppose is possible because by then we had run out of better ideas. That little cameo from Vaulks was dreadful. Twice he swung and missed the ball completely with his left foot, a couple of times he crossed it from good positions into the stand and several times he gave it away needlessly. He played like someone they had dragged out of the crowd. I felt sorry for him in and would have subbed the sub to save him further embarrassment if we had any left to use. If he is actually preferred to ***mings as a right back, how bad must ***mings be and why have we signed him?
Likewise how can someone worth paying £300K for be worse than Joe Mattock? Maybe it is just his demeanour but he looks like he just isn't bothered. I actually half wanted Kettle to send Mattock off for that shocking tackle so he would be forced to miss a game or two and we could at least see Purrington in a real League One game.
We have the same weaknesses this season as we had last which is a real worry.
I thought that the pre match warm up was excellent to watch. Unfortunately it took too much out of them and they peaked too early.
Warne did have a mare - poor performances from most of his players and no tactical response.
Kettle was dog doo - as usual. When the opposition bench are telling you to stop a game - you stop a game.
All that - and I have to say that before the season started I thought our first 4 games would be more or less our hardest and now hopefully our season can start against the mid table type sides. In truth I thought Charlton were better in every department and were a pleasure to watch. Emmanuel wants to stick to making 70s ****.
Can't agree about Vaulks - the whole team is playing pap and one bloke comes on and you expect him to emulate Messi. The problems manifest themselves throughout the whole team. Truth is - we are in the 3rd division where the players are prone to errors...where we belong.
