the signings so far and the budget

I quite impressed with the signings so far, but i thought that with tony saying we had a top 5 budget we would be getting in marque players on a fee, the only one we have bought is for 75K  on a player i think for some the jury is  still out .So my questions is what is this top 5 budget been measured against

  • signing on fee
  • agent fees
  • wages
  • or are they saving it for a last minute panic buy att end of august when the proverbial ha**** the fan and/or we have struggled and got a new man in charge..

so what do fellow banters think

Even when there's no fee involved agents, wages ect... take money out of the budget. Saw 5 of the signings Friday. Da ball was the pick. Ihwe' next. Potter just does a job, no thrills. Bit disappointed in the 2 loans from Ipswich. Warney says he'll only bring players in to improve the side, can't see how they have. If there's one more signing would be a Adeyemi type player in midfield.

In my opinion, I think what matters this season is establishing a squad of players, a core of a side that moves and thinks as a team that gets into a competitive/winning mindset, where subs can come in and fit in seamlessly to cover for injury, illness, or rest. That may cost money, but not necessarily a huge budget

The older ones amongst us will always refer to the 80/81 Div 3 Champions side. They seemed to move and operate as a unit rather than as individuals and while money was spent on Moore, Seasman, and Towner, the side was put together rather cheaply as the bulk of the squad such as Fern, Rhodes, Finney, Stancliffe, Green, Breckin, Forrest, and Gooding were already here supplemented by older players nearing the end of their career like Brown and Mullen. The rest is history that still makes the heart swell in Millers of a certain age. And if we look for further evidence of success on the cheap we only have to look at Forrest of that era, the side that Cloughie put together, a world beating squad of relative unknowns, but of course there was only one Cloughie.

So I'm not too worried that spending so far has been kept to a minimum. For me the important factor is footballing savvy. Have we got that footballing nous? Can money can't buy that? Chuck away the computer and the football software. JCH, Bowery, and Blackstock proved that for a club such as ours at the moment, throwing good money at the issue is not always the answer. Its down to the eye and experience of good scouting and how savvy the trainers, coaches, back room staff and the manager are, backed by a chairman who will walk the walk as well as talk the talk. But I remain to be convinced. So over to you Tony and Warney.

It's all about goals and we need to be banging them in and keeping the momentum up. I like the look of Ball and Proctor up front and even JCH is very close to being interested. I'm not sure about the management team tbh and if it's all goes tits up in August I think we'll have a new one before the kids go back to school.

I also like the look of Ball and Proctor.  Not sure if they have the number of goals in them that we need, and not sure about the supply into them unless Joe Newell is going to play (in my view without him in there - preferrably wide left - we lack creativity in midfield).

I think you're right about the managerial team NY.  The one year rolling deal for Paul Warne speaks volumes.  If we start badly Tony may well pull the trigger again and we will have yet another new start.  I wouldn't have given Warne the job at all but in fairness in my book any manager needs 12 months minimum to prove his worth.  We have to stick with someone long term at some point.  Every 'new start' is more difficult than the last.

I think as well we have to address the disconnect between fans and club, I liked Hammy's vid from Poland, more of that needs to happen. Lets see what goes on behind the scenes (within reason), lets share in the journey. A crowd can lift you when you're down, they can give that extra 5% that crosses the fine line of winners and losers. You can only get that from the crowd if they feel part of what's going on. Evans did more damage to this club people realise - Warney seems the type of man to repair that, I just hope it works out for him, Polly, Hammy, and for our sake cos we well and truly need everyone going in the same direction.

i forgot about the tony escape clause of giving warne a one year rolling contract . it may come back and bite him though if warne proves a success and bigger clubs come knocking.

Two successive promotions best day out in 54years of watching Miller's that's a load of damage in my book .SE was successful for g**s sake please admit it ,Redfurn and Stubs put us where we are today.

I'd agree about SE - he managed to successfully navigate TS style of ownership and got us two promotions - if he could have kept his promotion team with Tavs etc then we'd still be up there. All managers need a bit of ring craft on the wheeling and dealing side when there's no money for quality. Any fool can spend a billionaires money and buy relative success - e.g. SW

Steve Evans was successful with the club and delivered a dream to tony , but alas the sugar plum fairy Evans wanted more money and more players and tony wouldn't so we are where we are which is why warnock probably wouldn't stay

evans had a bad side to him in that he couldn't or wouldn't coach youngsters. tony saw the money that barnsley and sheff utd and others were reaping from selling their players they developed and also from the subsequent sell on clauses.

tony wants a part of that but unless the likes of bailey king mason and the others get first team action we will never know.

so the budget will be what tony wants to spend from his own pocket for the foreseeable future

Talking of the back room team is John Breckin still involved? he seems to have vanished and is not talked about, someone who is so experienced and more important has the club at heart would be such a waste if we've binned him

I think Brecks is back in his hospitality role -which he is brilliant at. He was hosting Stancliffe and Todd at the Sheff Utd friendly.

I'm looking fwd to coming down for my first view of the new blood on Saturday. I'm encouraged by what I've seen reported so far in the friendlies, and having a few players who can potentially score has to be better than last two seasons where we have been reliant on one player most of the time.

I watched the friendlies when we got batches of new players last few seasons and I couldn't' see then where ANY goals were going to come from apart from Ward. I have much more hope in that respect this season

Still worried about the fullbacks - but time will tell there.

I'm going to keep my powder dry this season about Warne, and the team generally, until I've seen 10 games or so in league 1.

But I am at least optimistic at this stage, we have to be, right??
