Well it seems as though the squad is coming together, Bosticks gone and a couple of good results thus far, albeit against lower level competition, but better than the Poland fiasco last year.
I wasn't in favour of 'Warnes' being appointed as manager, disappointed with the return of Barker, and a couple of signings appear a tad so so (this opinion derived from comments made on this board as I have never seen them play); and I would have liked to seen more work about the leakiest defence in Rotherham United history.
That said, I am feeling surprisingly optimistic at the moment, which is a bit of a shock to me as my views and opinions of late were/are firmly in the Brad camp.
The true proof will be when the season starts, but from someone who is ever the pessimist in all things Millers I'd say so far so good.
We've got pretty much the same leaky defence and don't have a regular goalscorer, so unless we recruit further (do we have any of the Danny Ward money to spend? Perhaps we just threw a chunk of it in Dexter's direction?) I can't see us pulling any trees up.
We have taken a massive gamble keeping Warne on. We don't want yet another season where we change manger once or twice during the campaign.
Getting at least a decent start will be vital to break last season's losing habit.
I think we will be a mid-table outfit and I'd be fairly content with that.
Never joined the doom and gloom brigade. Sure it was a depressing season and I was as down as most, but there is no future in predicting that things will remain bleak and black, and that there is only a downward spiral. I accept that things are far from perfect, but that is so for most clubs of our size. True, some of them do manage some parts of their business better than others, but much as we might want it, we cannot be best at everything, so we have to put up with what we have and hope that things will get better. And speaking of getting better, just remember how this club was about 8 years ago, and how it is now. If you are still then of the opinion that we are going down the pan, you're more depressed than I am.
It's a new season, new start and we should all be optimistic, and stay so unless results dictate otherwise.
I don't expect to watch Barca play, neither do I pander to the rhetoric premier league talk. What I want to see is lessons learned, what I want to see is an end to the quick fix saga we've endured the last 6? years. I want to be able to see 1 of our kids come good, I want to see a connect again between the players / staff / club and the supporters. (well done Hammy on the youtube jog vid by the way) - that's what we need - more Go Pro moments, lets see what these guys are doing behind closed doors. Lets share it with you, get everyone pulling together and success will happen.
I pretty much concur with your OP Calypso... I was very vocal last season, on here and in Tiser about bad things the club were doing, no-one wanting Warne, not selling Ward etc.. and most of all the Championship opportunity the club threw away by repeating it's mistakes, not addressing staff that were clearly incompetent and not seeing and acting on a completely useless set of full-backs.
I think the full back issue is still there, but maybe this drop in level will help, I don't know, because Fisher's main issue is wandering out of position, although in the away game I watched at Preston, it was the best game I've seen him have.
I said I would cancel my season ticket as a protest and I did so.
BUT!!! I actually do like the signings Warne has made and bagging lots of goals against any team is good for morale pre season.
Also, If I think about teams like Bournemouth and Norwich in recent years, they had successful seasons when they had a whole bunch of half decent strikers who knew how to score. Relaying on one striker to get 20 goals is a risk in any league, having 5 strikers that might get 8 or 10 each is better! Warne seems to be going for that model - it might just work!!
So, I find myself with a lot of pre season optimism, which I hope won't fall away after a few games. In any case I'm thinking we should set our opinion after 10 or 12 games, not after 3 or 4, as by then we will have a better view of how we are going to do and how the team is playing.
So : up the Millers and no moans from me at all at this stage !!! :)
