I would have thought that in a situation in which we have the opportunity to release a number of players and bring new ones in, the process would be as follows:-
1. Decide how you want to play; then
2. Retain only the players currently with us who are good enough and able to play in that system; then
3. Bring in new players who are also good enough and able to play in that system.
I will give Paul Warne a free tip - if you haven't already done it, give Chris Wilder a bell asap. He decided early doors what he wanted to do and assembled a group of good league one players who were round pegs to put into eleven round holes. It worked.
Well it would appear that one of those to be released (or more accurately contract not renewed) is to be Tom Thorpe whilst Richie "a typical Rotherham United player" is likley to be offered a new deal. GOD HELP US !!
The missing press boys are reporting both on "other" social media sites

Gaz if you were there last week Smallwood was one of our better players. Thorpe always looked dodgy to me at the back for us. Not bothered what Giggs said about him. Not showed it for us.

Does that not sum up this years crop when Smallwood is one of our better players
I saw Smallwood pass the ball forwards FOUR times v Birmingham, that's why he got MOM by the Prawn Sandwich brigade. If hes a "typical Rotherham United player" get ready for a rough 2017/18. How any knowledgeable Millers fan can be encouraged for the season ahead is totally beyond me, Warne has already hinted that it'll be a struggle & if he's keeping 90% of this season's tripe that struggle is a given.
My ethos is if you're taking over something you can't change the constituent parts then you have to go with summat that gets the best out of those parts. If you're looking to build something yourself then yes I agree you get the parts to fit that.
So a statement of intent - I think so - in that there won't be too much activity this summer - which I have to say doesn't fill me with the greatest of confidence
