So Tony seems to think that turning down MORE than 2 million quid for Danny Ward gives us more chance of staying in the Championship does he?
That comment alone, proves to me at least that his knowledge of football is shall we say limited as we could have got three half decent players in for that.

Seriously - he ain't worth that and we should have snatched QPRs hand off. "The Board" want their heads examining.

Cant win. Grumble when we don't sign quality, grumble when we don't sell one of our better players. We could have sold n bought 2 average players. Sign him up for another 3 years.

He is an average player that we could have got £2M+ for. If we had wanted Bogle (scored twice last night) we could have got him, he went for 50k more that we apparently offered - Wigan should never have had a sniff - we should have signed him on 2/1, not lose out at midnight on 31/1.

I also would have taken the money for Ward.

We would have trousered around £1.2m if reports of the sell on clause with Huddersfield are true.  All on the back of a good three month spell.  No disrespect to Ward, but who knows if he will stay fit and keep his goalscoring record going?  I wouldn't necessarily bank on it.

Lets face it, we are rebuilding now for a season in League 1.  Those who are saying 'sign him up for another 3 years' - how is that going to happen unless someone holds a gun to his head?  He isn't going to want to play for us in League 1 on League 1 wages when he can get a slice of a big fee, triple his wages and play with the big lads.  He isn't going to sign a new deal with us.  We cant offer him what others are prepared to offer him.   He will only be here if we use the one sided right to extend his contract and refuse to sell him.

The stark choice was to (a) cash in now and use the money wisely ready for next season, (b) force him to stay and activate a contract extension (that will probably pee him off) in the hope that we get a bigger fee in the summer or (c) force him to see out next season with us against his wishes and then lose him for nothing.

I fear that we have made the wrong choice.

Im not so sure that choices B and C are that stark.

The case for keeping him.

The very slim chance of staying up would evaporate if he was sold.
He may just as likely attract the same or a bigger fee next season.
If he doesnt attract an offer next season then he will be "priceless" all things being equal in league 1.

The variables are numerous but they all contain ifs and buts and maybes.

The case for letting him go seems to me to rest on the value for money point of view.

Too right Smiler. Not only would I have sold him, but I would have been looking for a new manager before Christmas in order to take advantage of the January window and start rebuilding for next season. I can't think of a better way to take as many positives from a lost season than to start to put a squad of players together and see how they gel in combative Championship football, tweak it where needed in the summer and come out blazing in L1 next year. Or is that too simple.

Sounds like a plan Towdlad.

I was hanging on to the thought that we know who our manager is going to be but just cant appoint him yet (rumoured) but the latest interview from TS suggests not.

On Danny Ward, I don't see how he would be any use to us in League 1 earning a third of what he could be earning somewhere else and playing in front of 3,000 not 30,000 because we have activated a contract extension. Is it just me, or does anyone else think that might not end well? I'm not suggesting he isn't professional but unhappy players aren't usually good players.

I agree Smiler, I don't think it ever ends well does when a club holds out like that. DW's head will not be in the right place, is he really going to get that much interest in a mid table (if we're lucky) L1 team?

I like Danny Ward, hes a good pro, but with his back issues and seemingly lost his scoring ability I feel this is going to cost us £1m plus not earn it
