What more did Campy have to do today to get MOTM? Score??
And when was tackling banned from the game ? We seem happy to allow teams to fetch the ball unchallenged into our box then try and block the shot! Never have i seen anything like that shambles today ...they had 34 shots ! How we didnt lose that game, and by some margin is beyond me. Looking forward watching Bentner and Assombalonga smashing us to bits on Wednesday!!
I think ex is right. Its a trend thats been developing for many years now. Its really boring and the results dont add up to the belief in it.
I think it appeals because it seems to be a neat and tidy way to set up. When you watch two teams do it that are equally matched it runs its course and eventually one of the teams breaks out of the mould after conceding. Its boring" boring ! boring!
The English game as it was , was always criticised for lack of technical and tactical ability. However, I think it was a ruse, a red flag and a bias that came to be accepted. The FA started appointing foreign coaches and we became somewhat harder to beat but nothing changed results wise overall, Indeed, it just got boring, average players with some technical ability became coverted and the passion gradually diminished.
And this malaise of a philosophy filtered down to the premier league and now the championship where it is held up as a holy grail.
It seems that if we look tidy and can string some possession together we are a good enough team. In defensive position we get everyone behind the ball, hold our shape no matter what and then retrieve possession after the opposition have finished with the ball.
Stubbs , thinks this will be enough. It is the philosophy of economy and combined with TS believing in incremental change but not being able to say what that is or what it looks like them Im afraid its the blind leading the blind.
Stubbs thinks like an accountant. He believes it will just be enough to balance the books. Hes concerned with savings not so concerned with risk management or investment for short term results
The sad thing is - even though we're not told this directly at Youth level - there's almost a social conditioning to do it and place emphasis on it. In fact I recently filled out a Devon FA questionnaire and the content of it was pushing towards that kind of emphasis (even if you weren't already - which many of us do).
If you are not good in possession, not got break neck pace or can't complete the odd Rabona you've got no chance. The thinking players have been phased out of the game for robotic individuals that make Gullit, Van Basten, Klinnsman, Bergkamp and whoever else you can mention look like mythical gods.
City and Utd yesterday was blistering and exciting, but it was obvious football. Go down the pyramid and the obvious football is still there with a massively diminishing skill set. Even 20 years ago I bet our Div4 promotion side would have wiped the floor with half the Championship. If that's happened in 20 years, what about the next 20 years - I'll bet L1 is no more than pub football.
For me its all part of the long term plan. Despite what we say about the PL, I think the FA have a long term goal of just 2 professional leagues - but why? - well like the earnings population, top 5% produce more than the other 95%, the same can be said in football. I bet half if not most of the PL pay more in taxes etc than the rest of the league put together. What the FA and Govt want is 2 Divisions full of this. And when that no longer produces the revenue required to the rich few, they'll then make it Europe wide, then global.
But for you and I who go to matches, the best experience is probably that of clubs 6-7-8 stages down the pyramid. Where you know the tea ladies name, can banter with the manager and entertain the whole family for relatively very little. The soul is still there - but has been ripped out from the professional league - I hate it
