If we sign Armstrong will he play along side ward? Or instead of? If he replaces it means we will be looking to slip the ball in behind the defence for him to run onto as apose to up to him. Have the new set of players got that in their armour, I think they have. I suppose it gives us a couple of options. Playing two up front does take one out of our midfield, can we cope in defence with one less midfield player, I'm not sure on that one. Who would be a manager?
Its a bit like the cricket captain always wanting the extra fielder. Warnock sacrificed a player to have Halford just sit in midfield. He asked Derbyshire and Grant Ward in particular to work their wotsits off to make up the extra man by joining Best whenever they could but getting back to defend the wide areas as well. Other teams use a 'number ten' to be both a forward and a midfielder, finding those gaps between the other teams lines. I agree with you Fliker - in Allan, Brown, Forster-Caskey if he gets it together, Newell when fit and the other players Stubbs has brought in we have the potential to play with one out and out striker and avoid having to lump it too often. Even if you have to hit it long occasionally a forward with pace can still be a threat if you are hitting channels instead of defenders heads. Where Danny Ward does well is that he is mobile but also very decent in the air for someone of his stature, which is why he makes a very serviceable option as a lone striker.
First thing I would say is that Danny Ward has done more than anyone to justify his place this season. Two goals in two games at NYS is outstanding considering our recent scoring issues. A Rotherham fan on PorG texted in after the game on Saturday to say he was nothing more than a show pony and wasn't worth his place. I almost ran off the road! I reckon AS is assembling a squad which is going to give him many options depending on the opposition. What excites me is that, against lesser teams he has great attacking options with Brown and Taylor playing wide and Ward/? up front. Against the tougher sides he can shore up his mid field with the likes of Adeyemi and Frecklington but still have some pace to counter on the break. Of our new midfielders, I hope Vaulks can build on his early promise - he's gone missing too much when the going gets tough. Allan could do with some strength training - he seems to get bullied easily, but I'm confident that F-C will prove very useful. His work is not always noticeable but he covers lots of area. We'll not really know the quality we have for at least a month when everyone's fit, the team have gelled and any new signings have arrived. That said, I'm cautiously optimistic!
If we're in a "battle" for Armstrong we may as well forget it now. Every time we are in for a player with another club the player chooses the other club 100% of the time so...............ah well!!!
...anyway, with Izzy and Danny we are looking much better as Danny ward is quality -his only flaw is getting him to have a consistent season and I think weight is an issue for him.
It was brief but I did like the look of Adeyemi much more than Halford, smallwood types and as others up above have said we can now see that stubbs is creating a few different options and I think he has done a good job in this respect.
He has also definitely strengthened the back 4 and I must say that thus far he is beating Evans and Redfern in terms of putting a good looking utility squad together with some actual ability to control some of the game .
