Not as confident after that first game

We started well, passing the ball around bossing possession. Despite taking a well deserved lead from a set piece we didn't really create a great deal and it took a great long range effort to double our lead. The second goal woke Wolves up and they were the best team in the last 20 mins of the first half without really threatening. Until they scored that is.

The sending off was the worst thing that could happened. 2-1 up playing 10 men should be a formality. But no. Apart from ball across the 6 yard box we created zip, zilch. Everytime Wolves got the ball they looked dangerous.

From the new signings;

Vaulks - wanted the ball and put his foot in. Could be decent

Forster Caskey - poor. I would have subbed him at half time

Taylor - looks like a good signing

Forde - jury's out

Allen - not seen enough

Stubbs - why fetch Smallwood on when Frecks goes off? We're playing 10 men and he puts Smallwood on?

We need some proper pace in defence - quickly. We also need a proper striker.

Happy enough-what I expected.

It was and is obvious we need more pace at the back.

We missed a way of stretching the game and of course need an out and our striker.

Decent attempt but just lacking physically in midfield when the going got tough.

Thought Zenga got it spot on with his tactics and changes in the second half. He dampened down our threat from the wingers by double teaming Taylor, stopped us playing it in midfield by closing down quicker and pushed their big striker closer on to Broadfoot to stop him being so effective at clearing the high ball forward. Result being that their midfield picked up more second balls to push forward and force us on the back foot and unfortunately we had no answer, especially so when Frecklington went off. Although I thought Thorpe had a great game when he came on at right back with Mattock going off and Taylor switching it left us a little unbalanced down the left. In the end although disappointing, a point was a fair reflection on the game.

yes, but in fact he made overtures to the majority of  those changes in the last 15 of the first half and I was a little disappointed stubbs and the team couldnt combat it.

Mixed feelings. Good point but after the start we had and even 2-1 up against ten men you can't help but be a bit frustrated not to have won it. We played some good football and I think will be good to watch this season and am cautiously optimistic about our chances of staying clear of the bottom three. The defending for both goals was amateurish however. We are all clamouring for a striker or two and the squad needs them, but we have just as much need at the back. We lack mobility. I like Joe Mattock as a rule but he needs to do better. Pre season he has looked half interested to me and was directly responsible for goals conceded with basic mistakes against Sunderland and Scunny. I can live with what happens in friendlies but worryingly the same pattern was evident today. He made the lamest of efforts to cover across for their first goal (although Wood was just as guilty of nodding off) and the position he got himself into for the second was just awful. Wood and Broadfoot obviously both lack pace and for me they don't work as a pair. Decent teams are founded on good back fours and I hope that is where we will concentrate our immediate efforts - on the training ground and/or with changes of personnel if needed.

Wood and Broadfoot were both dreadful today.

Totally agree with what smaller says. We won't go down this season but will struggle without some additional pace at the back!

Freudian slip there Duncan. Have you been talking to Mrs S? I think the lack of pace at the back and especially centre half was a problem all last season whether it was any combination of Broadfoot, Halford, Collins or Wood. It is why we end up sitting too deep. Warnock sorted it by sacrificing a midfielder and plonking Halford in front of the central two but that can't be the answer. I haven't seen much of Wilson but I am told he is a good athlete. Seen goals now on FLS. First goal abysmal all round. Second - we had numbers but backed off and off, and Mattock ends up facing the wrong way and miles away from the player who scores who he couldn't see. Really very poor.

At 40mins I nearly removed the Rotherham Wolves draw from my ac***ulator. At 90 mins I was hovering over the cash out button as needed Bristol City to win, I thought better of it. While a draw (probably taken before the game) is a disappointment especially from a 2 goal lead, the £850 from Ladbrokes via a £10 bet isn't!

Seriously though, AS needs to better game manage to not let that happen again. I can't say its inexperience, he was a seasoned pro fine tuned to the art of not letting leads slip. Perhaps then it was arrogance? Well I say welcome to the Championship, learn from it. I listened in and too often against 10 men we were pinging diagonal balls - is this true? - If so - why? - it was obvious our football in the 1st half pushed Wolves back deep. Its fine in retrospect - but Halford on after the sending off to sit in front of the centre halves isn't a defensive mind set, it means we maintain possession, 11 men can't run around after a ball in that heat never mind 10.

Whatever 'went wrong' - we all know we assure our safety by picking up more than 2/3's our points tally at home, and if we can tear down Wolves like it appeared in that first 40 mins then it bodes well - the last 2 seasons we haven't been able to get the ball off them!

though I wasn't there a draw is a reasonable result in terms of survival and the fact a lot of the players will be bedding in etc.

Ex, that's about right from my point of view.

The game was "lost" in the second period due to an unwillingness to change it. I certainly would have but maybe the result wouldn't have altered . What has been confirmed is stubbs will continue as he was at hibs -this is David Weir Mk 2.

I'm not saying I'm against what I saw because it's clear the goals themselves were very poor indeed and could have happened due to poor movement from the defense anyway. We did lack steel though and we're pushed back too easily.

All in all I'm happy enough with what Stubbs is trying to do.

I think the Defence will need a lot of work as Broadfoot was put undertook much pressure and also took too much on at times but he wasn't the only one guilty of wasteful possession in good areas that put us under needless pressure.

Lots to say about the game and much to ponder as we move on. Proud of what he's trying to do but caution whether he can with the budget.

First half sublime - even 'Ole's from the home crowd at one point. Second half - tired, their 10 men looked in better condition. Liked Taylor.

No complaints from me. Rotherham started really well. Jon Taylor was running their number 18, Dominic Iorfa, ragged.

Iorfa eventually got the red card when he tugged Taylor back when they were both vying for the ball well inside the Wolves' half.

And so, we need another striker? Oh, wait a minute! Danny Ward's got the number 9 shirt. I reckon he's earned that shirt. More to the

point he scored the first goal for the Millers.

Wolves' had their tails between their legs when Vaulks cannoned a blistering shot past Ikeme for the Millers' second goal.

As for Vaulks. He is a midfield general in the making. He's got a major part to play in the next few months.

There was some quite audible booing from some of the Wolves' supporters as their team were square passing the ball across the

back line.

Of course Wolves' tails were wagging when they scored their second goal.

Late in the game Wolves then began to play more direct football by playing the ball over the top to try and upset the Millers' defence.

I think that Stubbs brought on Tom Thorpe more for his height advantage rather than his pace.

In short, an encouraging start to the season for the Millers.

we played well we need 4 players to give us a chance. A centre half (wood is a reserve and brodfoot didn't win a header in the 2nd half), a faster left back, and 2 strikers can't play with only 1 striker all season

Let's not forget Mr Yates who I think might have a big part to play this season?

Very promising taking into account that more signings are on the way.

Best football that Ive seen for years from a Rotherham side in the first 30 minutes.

Fitness was a disappointment and Warney needs some help from someone with a bit more expertise to get to the level of conditioning required.

I would agree that with our expenditure and facilities matching teams for fitness is difficult but its the one thing that we should be able to match or better teams to gain an edge.

No problems with the effort we put in and very encouraging performance.

Draw was a fair result although both of their goals should have been defended much better but don't want to be too harsh as we have a point on the board which is great.

Surprised and pleased to see us in eighth position!

mention for danny ward,if we had bought a high price centre-forward and he had played like danny then we would have been saying "that,s what you pay your money for" so well done to him.

Agree, Danny ward was a million pound player easily on that performance.

As for fitness if it's beyond a championship club to know how to gain peak match fitness we are in real mire. I can only imagine we might be short on personal trainers but we shouldn't be-they should be well within our budget.

I think it's more strength training that's required and flat out speed/bursts of speed.
