Hi guys, just heard a snippet of news from a Millwall fan, he tells me we have put in a bid of £1.25million for Gregory. I dont know how true this is but he's a pretty straight fella and assures me we wont get him for that. Just thought Id pass it on.
It certainly rings true with the statement from the club that we have made an offer for a player and the offer substantially beats the club record for fees paid
Such is the modern world, somebody makes something up on a message board, it does the rounds of the twittersphere picks up momentum then some lazy journalist take it as a fact.
Next thing it's headline sports news on Sky
I think I might start on of my own:-
"Just heard that Ronaldo faked injury so he could come off the pitch early during the Euro final to start talks with the Millers manager on s possible transfer to New York Stadium"
Hope youre not referring to my original post Jolly. I can assure you what I posted was what was said to me in good faith and passed on by me like wise.
Until my conversation with the fella who I have known for some time and met by chance, I had no idea that we had made an offer at all. All I knew that we were supposedly interested. The guy told me that we would not get him for what we had offered. I replied by asking how much had we offered and he told me £1.25million.
That nearly knocked my top set out that RUFC had allegedly offered that kind of money. Since it had been kept quiet about the sort of money being made available for transfers, I thought this could be news indeed and I passed it on in good faith believing others may be interested. I did actually say I didn't know how true the information was
As much as I believe that Towd believes in the integrity of his source, I'm not quite sure RUFC are in the market to offer sums of anywhere near £1m just yet. If we'd got a squad of say 18-20 and just were looking for that little bit of quality on top it perhaps just maybe could be entertained. The logical fact is we're 5 or 6 quality players short of even making a squad that can compete season long - so on that basis I can't entertain the notion. Add to the fact we have a lot of infrastructure to fund, incl. the training complex which by all accounts needs major investment sensibly can you see that much being spent on 1 single player?
I'm sure Gregory won't have a shortage of admirers of the northern ilk with much stronger budgets than us.
There are an awful lot of news outlets carrying it and being an avid newshound my impression is that some of those outlets have very rarely been wrong over the course of several seasons. Im not including sky in this, but rather HITC and local media , which has quoted stubbs as saying :
He said: “We have got a couple of bids in for players. One of them is significant.
“We’re just waiting to hear back from them. What positions? Important positions!
I have no more evidence than my nose concerning the reports , but I feel the amount of energy around out current transfer buisness amounts to what is considered very big money for us being offered for 1-2 targets. My last piece of "evidence" concerns the fact we have let go of all our strikers considered to be out and out strikers (JCH) cannot be considered in this yet as he hasnt held down anywhere near a regular space.
so, whether its Gregory or Bradshaw or someone else , we may be looking at this kind of money for the very first time as Millers fans.
I dont think that kind of money is sustainable but Im just wondering if TS has got a little bit more recklessness (calculated risk) in his boots this season.
Why do I think this?
third season.
Surviving by the skin of our teeth
not spending on decent players
Stubbs is on a hiding to nothing coming here and must have had some real promises to leave Hibs where he would surely have got promotion at the third time of asking and then on to the next step...ambition feels like its come together in this pair and TS is not getting any younger...time to speculate a little more?
No striker with 4 weeks to go and that is a death sentence.
real cash must be behind a bid for a striker.
Some fair reasoning there ian and I would agree. As I've said before, I believe this is a watershed moment for the club and if we mean to consolidate then we have to invest. TS has come up trumps so far with the stadium and we all seem to agree that perhaps the Championship happened quicker than expected and as a club we were not ready.
But now surely is the time. If we dont make our play soon the punters will start to lose interest so too the would be investors if we continue to scramble to be 4th from bottom year on year. It has to be now or never.
Millwall rejected 3 offers for Gregory over the summer. The Owls were interested in signing him. No doubting we put a bid in for him but in my opinion he's not worth more than £1.25M. He will be touted to the highest bidder, we should walk away from this one.
Of the two player's Bradshaw is the better option, Gregory is almost 28yrs old and has played most of his career in non league football. Granted last season he scored 27 but he's not worth the £2M Millwall are asking. Bradshaw is much younger, has more potential, if we are successful in signing him and he does the business in the Championship then we can sell him on at a profit. Gregory may just be a one season wonder with his 27 goals.
On his twitter account he's quoted as saying " Don't believe everything you read ". Millwall FC have also rubbished the claim that he's asked for a transfer. He's in Portugal training with the rest of the team. Millwall have a 1 year option to extend his contract, more than likely they will take up that option despite him wanting to come back to the Sheffield area.
Feel sure he used to play for Staveley Miners Welfare a long while ago.

No not doubting what you heard, just questioning how much the story might have been exaggerated before your source first heard it.
not keen on him too Tiger for the same reasons but I also know we need to have a goal threat and that starts with someone who knows where the goal is and since we wont attract a championship striker Id say that Gregory is a decent bet...although ridiculously expensive.
After turning down Rotherham's latest bid for Gregory, Neil Harris said “Lee is a boy who wants to play at the best level he can. He is happy playing for us."
