The kick off in football

i always thought that it was in the rules of the game that at a kick off the ball has to move forward.

In tonight's Portugal game Portugal kicked off by playing the ball backwards.

Have the rules changed?

There are quite a few new laws of the game. Stopping a goal scoring opportunity has been reduced from a straight red to a mandatory yellow if it wasn't deliberate. You can now legally score an own goal from kick off.

It's hard to imagine what led to this change of rule. Who asked for it and why? For some teams it's one of the few opportunities to get into the opposition's half! On the whole I reckon the refereeing at Euro 2016 has been good. Most games have been allowed to flow and most of the refs have not been seeking to be the centre of attention. Diving by players seems to be going out of fashion as well.

Probably because ref Mike Dean isn't there.

Plus there are no diving South Americans
