Austerity Is Not Working

A bit of politics/economics!

Our trade gap is now as wide as it has ever been.  Our overall borrowing is growing.  The Chancellor talks about 'balancing the books' by a date that he keeps having to put back (most commentators - even those who are right leaning - think that his new 2020 target date is pie in the sky) but by that he means having a year when it doesn't go up any more - not beginning to wipe out what is already there.  Unemployment is falling it is true, but well paid solid employment is being replaced by low hour low wage employment and zero hour-type work (a short step from the days when people used to queue outside factories hoping for the nod).  Direct taxation is lower but indirect taxation is higher than ever.  By indirect taxation I include things like Council Tax, which will go up because central government is cutting the payments it makes to local authorities.  The services used by the poorest in society are the ones being hardest hit with cuts.  Services like mental health services, state schools, the list goes on.

There is no need for this austerity.  It can not work.  The way to generate wealth as a nation is to invest money and generate growth from the bottom up, not to cut cut cut and reduce the tax take.  We are plodding along at 2% growth but it is all in one area of the country and one sector of society.  We are becoming a two nation state - the haves and the have nots.  This government is using economics to fulfil a political agenda - no more no less.  Yet a dangerously high proportion of the have nots are being fooled into blaming either each other or demonising immigrants for all of their woes.

Very good post, if Jeremy Corbyn wants to get elected, he's got to nail those truths to the wider British electorate come election time, for far far too long these vile pigs in charge have absolutely raped this country, time for change.

Do you think Corbyn is electable even if he gets the message across effectively? I would like to think so but I have my doubts. The best hope is that the Tories get so complacent that they self destruct. The biggest danger is that if that does happen people will lurch further to the right. The working man seems to be more willing than ever to buy the far right lie than to revert to old fashioned socialism.

I think he is, providing he does get that message across, he's also got to promote a policy to build cheap housing very quickly and ensure that those houses goto the right people., and affect the housing market that seems to grow without hindrance. He will always be opposed by the media, and that is the main thing he's up against.
I reckon he'd do well in tv debates as well, i don't think there's anyone who could really take him on there, he's already shown Cameron up in most of the PMQ'S ive seen.

Your point about the working man lurching to the right is correct and it pains me when my mates talk right wing crap, i do debate but its hard not to have a pop more often, i just shake my head sometimes..

I think it's going to be too hard for corbyn. I think his stance on Europe, immigration and his incredibly naive comment on nuclear weapons has already made him unelectable. It is too much (however correct and commendable ) to ask lots of folks to trust him with defence and our standing in the world.
It's true that under the conservatives the middle working classes have suffered very significantly but so have those even more fragile. It's such a worrying time. Wages hace stagnated for so long now that it's really hurting most people up to middle income. Where will anyone find the guts and money to put cash into those groups and housing? Is it something that even moderate labour supporters can fully support? The welfare cuts had to happen to some extent and there is the rub. We all want a fair society but too far left and too far right and the British react with passive liberal tendencies and nothing much changes.

There certainly is no reason for austerity. How can we kick start the economy if we have empty pockets. the main problem is we have destroyed our engineering/manufacturing industries and we are about to kill off the remains of the steel industry. If we dont produce we cant sell if we dont sell we dont earn, forcing us to buy abroad, and cheaply, buying poor standard rubbish. Buying cheap from abroad means undercutting home industries (those that remain) causing either more unemployment or forcing down wages.

The World markets are always to blame and yet other countries, ie Germany, France etc protect their industry. We either close it down or flog it off cheap and stand by and watch foreign investors shut down the factories and transfer the work abroad. The whole country is just about owned by foreign companies, power generation, water industry, railways, steel, etc etc, the profits earned here go abroad even though many are subsidised by the tax payer.

Ultimately politicians, and bankers do not suffer austerity, in fact they never suffer from the consequences of their policies or actions. They are protected and immune from the effects of their greed and stupidity .When they talk about supporting Britain, its all hog wash. They support their Britain ie the Establishment

Corbyn: We MUST allow refugees from Syria in as Turkey is not a safe country.
Corbyn: We should allow Turkey into the EU.
Corbyn: We should vote to stay in the EU.
Corbyn: We should negotiate with ISIS.

Therefore...

Corbyn: We should vote to allow an unstable country's inhabitants to have free movement within our borders.

Don't worry because we will protect our country from the sea with submarines that carry no weapons.

Vote Corbyn? The man can't even dress properly let alone run a party.

Cameron: Auterity this, austerity that, tax the disabled and don't tax the rich.

Vote Cameron? The man would sell his grandmother for a vote.

Farage: Blame everything on the EU.

Vote Fargage? I probably relate to this man the most out of the three but would I want him running the country? No chance.

Basically I struggle to identify with any one of the main 3 parties.
