Oh What Fun it is to see the Millers win Away!

Our third away victory of this troubled season was arguably our most satisfying, coming as it did against our "Massive" neighbours and against their much vaunted star studded team. They've splashed the cash in order to reach the Promised Land of the Premiership and their fans and local media have certainly bought into it.

This was a game that the Owls were nailed on to win, a three point banker. Even many of our fans had predicted defeat and many decided against the short trip. Shame that so few travelling Millers were present but it didn't really matter.

A variety of reasons were offered for staying away. High ticket prices? But I'd paid more at Leeds and Middlesbrough! Their stadium is a dive? Short memories here, remember those trips to Accrington and Macclesfield not so long ago, Hillsborough is positively luxurious compared to many stadiums I've watched the Millers at in very recent times. We don't want to be present after a drubbing, think of all those gloating home fans? I've been to lots of away games this season and we've only managed two wins before this one, surely they're used to seeing us lose, you support the team no matter?

Had we played this game a few weeks ago, I'm quite certain we'd have lost. Now we had an ace up our sleeves, arch tactician Neil Warnock. Hated, loathed detested by the Owls but I suspect also respected,

Here was a man with the experience we'd been crying out for all season. He can't work miracles overnight and it had taken until his fourth game in charge to register a goal, but last weekend's all action display against Brentford had given us hope that somehow and in spite of our somewhat hopeless situation, he might yet save our Championship status.

Many Owls fans had been keen to dilute the games importance, it was just another fixture, just another three points at stake. Some, even suggested that it didn't qualify as a local derby!

I suppose that they are The Massive and it is an honour simply to be playing them.

Despite this being just another game, many more home fans did turn out and almost 29,000 fans swelled the attendance. I'm not too sure where those extra fans appeared from but it definitely improved the atmosphere by filling the stadium. I wonder if as Rotherham's fans chanted They'd come to see the Millers? Unlikely. Could it have been due to ticket prices not being sky high as had been threatened? Don't think so as their game against Charlton in a couple of weeks in just £20 admission. Could it be that numbers of curious neutrals had turned out? Not sure. Whatever the reasons it was good to see the old crumbling stadium well attended.

Rumours of an unchanged Millers starting line up proved incorrect. Thomas and Best were sacrificed to Danny Ward and Grant Ward. Greg Halford was to play in front of the back four. Interesting?

I'll not say much about the ninety minutes except that in that first half, we played as well as I'd witnessed since we'd gained promotion to this Championship. Wednesday fans will say they played poorly in that same 45 minutes and I'd agree but there was an element of us actually causing them to play this way. Danny Ward and Derbyshire were leading their defence a merry dance and Grant Ward's pace was a joy to behold. Defensively we were coping well with their much heralded strikers. Greg Halford proved to be the key here, breaking up attack after attack and completely negating any threat from the likes of Hooper, who I'm my opinion looked a tad overweight and not as mobile as I'd imagined he could be,indeed, the service from their midfield was virtually non existent.

We scored one and should have doubled or maybe even trebled that lead. Home support was silenced as the Millers, smaller than usual in numbers but much more vocal than usual chanted about the three sides being likened to a library.

There's usually a refereeing issue in every game we play and this proved no exception as McGeady for once got to the byline and crossed for Turner to deflect the ball past Camp, only for the referee, after consultation with the linesman, to rule it out for offside. I was sat behind that goal and it looked offside to me. After the game, video evidence seem to suggest that Turner was played onside by Mattock. I'm still not convinced as it's easy to offer a variety of angles for something as tight as that. I've seen still images of the incident which suggest that the referee was correct.

Hey ho! You win some of those, you lose some. We've been the victim of many such alleged injustices before.

At half time, we all agreed that we ought to have been at least two goals to the good and that the Owls would improve.

On came Lucas Joao, the player who'd done so well against us at NYS early on this season. He fired them up with his pace. They huffed a bit, they puffed a bit but never really looked capable of blowing the house down. They hit the bar and Camp made a couple of saves, their fans in desperation appealed for everything, the referee stood firm and as the minutes ticked away our Master Manager slowed things down by his substitutes. Great moments for us Millers, infuriating for the Owls. Derbyshire looking the other way and at the opposite end of the pitch when being subbed. Grant Ward developing a limp as he came off, lovely!

As the time ticked away, Smallwood might have become an overnight legend but somehow blazed wide with just the keeper to beat after a great ball from Best but it didn't really matter.

2,600 Millers celebrated with the players as the whistle ended the game. Camp ran the length of the pitch to salute the fans and conducted the fans in a final cheer. Neil Warnock offered a wry smile, job done. This was a famous victory, more important to us than them? Not sure, probably as important. Bragging rights secured at least for a few months.

Key to our win was the unexpected role of Halford, who is quite simply a rejuvenated player under the guidance of Neil W. He broke up their attacking play before they got near to our gaol on numerous occasions and was arguably the man of the Match. Camp was as assured as ever and must give the men in front of him great confidence. Danny Ward led the line superbly and Grant Ward's running and pace was a revelation.

Matt Derbyshire seems to come alive in February/March time and I wonder if he''ll score goals on a regular basis now, much as he did last season this time?

Two Cup Finals won, eleven remaining! Middlesbrough up next, the miracle is still possible.

Yep all good that from the stream I agree. What does seem to be missed is what SE and NR glaringly missed, to play away and counter attack you need pace and we did that time and again the 1st half, G Ward was a constant outlet, he played far too deep under NR, and he and D Ward on reflection will say should have finished those chances. For the goal excellent change of direction from Richardson and Frecks will put those balls in all day long, in fact I think G Ward also put a similar ball in begging to be hammered in but nobody was there. And its on that point that D Ward is not the man to solve our up top problems. Had Best not been injured NR would still be here and we'd be 10 points if not more better off, I truly believe he's that effective. Only worry is, that worked on Saturday but any formation without Joe Newell on it is worse for it. I applaud Derbyshire for taking it on but Newell has to be included somewhere in my view

I think that initially Newell was rested not dropped, looked very tired last few games he played. He will return refreshed though. Squad game and I expect him, Shinnie, Burke and possibly even Ledesma to return soon. Big squad no room for everyone.

Thanks Axholme.

Good point Exeter regarding pace in the team. I also couldnt understand G. Ward playing so deep as it made him totally ineffective and likewise too advanced. He needs area with angles to choice from being able to accelerate quickly and then go wide or commit players from central positions.

On D.Ward, I tend to think he offers something useful and different than the Best types in terms of width and creativity. He is also very fast and creates angles. Its quite a statement re the point tally but certainly at the time it felt to me that it really set the team back. It did seem clear that he would make a huge difference to the teams shape.

As much as I like Ward, I would also agree that Best potentially is the better choice. He is effective in a much larger area than Ward and certainly holds the ball up better. He is also more a natural finisher. Its nice to have real width and threat down both sides but it isnt very practical considering some of the opposition we will be playing in the last few games. There is a need to keep it tight and the shape can suffer too much if Midfielders have there duties spread too thin. Left or right probably depends on the strength of the opposition.

Both Wards were effective against Wednesday and including Derbyshire they were some very good forward play including width and things more central., which suggests its a pretty good system too. As you say, we could have easily had 3.

One thing is highlighted by all this and its that quite quickly with Warnock we have so many more options. That has to be the mark of a very good and experienced manager. Makes NR and SE look one dimensional.

Good write up that Axholme.

Games turn on fine margins.

The Wednesday game was almost exactly like the Preston game. Same formation. At Preston D Ward was up front with G Ward wide right, Newell wide left and a midfield three (Andreu furthest forward). We controlled the first half, scored one and it could have been more (defender cleared off the line from D Ward) and limited Preston to nothing. At half time they changed it and went very direct, pushed us back and applied some pressure without creating much. The two games were almost identical. The difference was that we gave two soft goals away at Preston, including a very unlucky last minute own goal, and we come away disappointed with everybody slagging NR off.

The Bolton game was similar. Similar formation - D Ward up front on his own until injured with Burke right and Newell left, and three in the centre. We were the better team, Shinnie misses an absolute sitter that would have put us two one up with twenty to go and then in the last minute Camp makes a save and the rebound falls straight to the one Bolton player following up. The sky is falling in and NR has to go.

At Wednesday, yes we worked hard and yes we defended well - don't get me wrong we deserved the win - but lets face it we got a couple of breaks. The offside goal was marginal and the crossbar came to our rescue, and we walk away discussing NW's tactical genius.

I am not taking anything away from Saturday's win. It was a really strong performance and we deserved the points. Warnock got it spot on. I am just saying that we have set up the same and worked just as hard in other matches and perhaps at times just haven't had the breaks.

Incidentally I thought Wednesday played right into our hands. Ask Richard Wood and Kirk Broadfoot whether they would rather have a physical battle with the lumbering Nuihu and the (I agree Axholme) overweight Hooper, or have Joao running at and past them and I know what they would prefer. Even when they brought Joao on they still lumped it at the big fella. They chose the wrong 'dinamic'.

Agree with most of that, but at Bolton we really should have won. At 1 1 second half they were all over the place and with a little more attacking threat, in my opinion, we could and should have won. Not sure whether we worked quite so hard at either Preston or Bolton as we did Saturday. At Preston a fluke of a winning goal killed us but the second half was dire from our point of view after they'd changed things. NR rarely appeared to know what to do when things altered from the opponents point of view.

Bolton didn't have the players to really hurt us. Also, N Redfern in my opinion was too cautious when things needed changing, N Warnock doesn't appear to be.

Redfearn lacked a plan B and was too nice whereas our current manager does seem to have that plan B and I suspect a plan C and is definitely not nice!

I see that you agree with me that Hooper was a tad oversized? I was quite shocked just how portly he looked in the flesh as it were. I was surprised with Wednesday, nowhere near as great as we'd been led to believe and despite the big attendance I didn't think that their support was particularly intimidating!

I was disappointed with Wednesday Axholme, if you know what I mean. Hooper arrived on loan out of shape but I would have thought by now he would be completely match fit. He definitely looked a few pounds too heavy and a yard off the pace. If you compare his work rate to Danny Ward's it was a stark contrast. I also thought Bannan was dreadful. He is clearly very talented, but he wanted several touches every time he got it to fit a trick in and show everyone how good he is, and it just slowed the game down which suited us. Then when things went wrong for them he was too concerned with trying to referee it. I haven't seen enough of them to know for sure, but I suspect they missed Forestieri massively (so to speak). I don't think myself that they are anywhere near ready to go up. But I'm from Toytown and know nowt, so they won't care what I think and quite right too. UTM.

Plus another factor was the playing surface which again surprised me. They've apparently spent heavily on it but it was poor and quite worn looking in parts. Overall they were nowhere near as good as they were at the NYS but that's par for the course. Fingers crossed for this evening.
