Fully understand why ref gave the penalty

I've just watched it frame by frame and it looks like their player knocked the ball before Frecks dives in and takes him out.

Frecks did get his toe to the ball before taking out the player but at full speed it doesn't look that way.

Sorry I disagree, it was the decision of a man who has never played the game. Everyone else in the ground called it right. Even the Brentford coaching staff were embarrassed.

Freaks said after that the refs opinion was that their forward got the ball first. Surely he has to look at which direction the ball goes after challenge. No pen

There's nothing to disagree with - it wasn't a pen.

All I'm saying is that I can see why he gave it. Frecks dove in and actually turned his back before sticking his toe out. I know we feel hard done to by refs but I don't think for one moment that any of them are biased. It's not an easy job, especially when every decision can be scrutinised in slow motion from 20 different angles.

The thing is though Oneaday, everyone in the ground, except the ref , knew it wasn't a pen in real time....

I was too far away but the crowd at that end seemed fairly unanimous .

Refs are fallible.

Ive just wacthed it in real time and I must say that there was nothing in me that reacted to that and cried **** , its a Pen!

It looked like a fairly standard clearance and a clear dive or falling over with a good yard between the players.

He was another strange ref. We have had him before and he was just as odd then.

At the other end when we were defending he let several nailed on fouls against us go.

I thought I heard Frecks say that the ref had apologised to him and said he was pleased when Ward scored to cancel out his error.

fair play if he said that.

In Rugby league the officials work as a team, aided by TV replays and are humble enough not to make decisions unless they have no doubt, and even then the ‘team’ can overrule them, as was seen tonight in the England game.

In Tennis, players have a limited amount of appeals on key points, technology helps make the decision.

In Cricket, multiple technology is used extensively to help the Umpires, and again, appeals can initiate technology which can confirm or overrule the officials.

It is embarrassing, with all the money and status of Football that referees are still allowed ‘God’ status. There is no right reasoning for this to persist. Technology will eventually be adopted properly in football, like it is in Rugby, Tennis and Cricket, and I for one will cheer hard and loud when that happens….

In my opinion, a referee ought to judge himself firstly on whether his own actions and opinions have affected the outcome of a game. A referee should NEVER influence the outcome of the game, yet so many do in so many games....

Great point.

It would be great if they took that as a conscious oath before every game.

He was incompetent. That's why. He certainly was paid.

I think the ref knew he got it wrong after watching it at half time - how else would you explain the complete turnaround in how he reffed in the 2nd half? We got everything in the 2nd half and nothing in the first. Unless he has a twin it's the only explanation for the bipolar way the game was handled
