Got to say, I think Mattock is providing a lot of class in the LB position. We've struggled for a player we can get behind in that position since Joe Skarz was prematurely and mistakenly released by the Short Sighted Fat One. I think his contributions all over the field get overlooked - he isn't flash, he isn't the most skillful and he doesn't possess lightning pace but I think he is greater than the sum of his parts. He's a solid, dependable LB who makes few mistakes and rarely gets done by the opposition because he has a couple of yards between his ears. Of the current crop of 'new' players who've had a few games for us to rate I reckon it's
1. Camp
2. Newell
3. Mattock
IMO, all 3 would leave a big hole if they were out for a game. I get that Camp and Mattock aren't the future, due to age and it's only a matter of time before someone comes knocking for Newell, but all 3 are up there in terms of best in position at Championship level. I am a bit mystified as to why Neil takes him off at 60 mins in every game - the lad will get fed up with that (see below)
BTW , I was sat behind Newell's bird and parents at the Derby game at the iPro and heard the Dad say Fulham and West Ham had expressed interest in him while he was Peterborough. 2 things I took from that? His bird is fit as f*** and given the season he's having for us, we need to make the most of him - I think he'll be gone before next season starts. Gutted.
We have him for another 2.5 years, so anyone who wants him had better stump up some cash. I know posh have some sell on fee, but we got him of them when they didnt want him to go too. swings and roundabouts.
