And nicely tucked away within this article is the following nugget of information.

"Buxton has a contractual issue which needs resolving before he will be considered again." - WTF is going on.

Was he promised so many games in a season if he was fit, what is going on.

He either is our player to ask him to do what we want him too, or not.

I thought it was to do with extension to contract? Maybe with the window we are not showing our hand?

The way the sentence is however suggests its a bit terse between club and player.

You sometimes see situations where a certain number of appearances triggers something like a further payment to the club a player was bought from, for example.  Buxton was signed as a free agent with a recent history of injury problems.  My best guess (and it is only a guess) is that under his contract with us Buxton has a trigger where after so many appearances he is entitled to something, whether that be a further payment or perhaps an option at his discretion to a second year on his contract.  I am guessing that he is one game away from the trigger, and that we have said to him that we are not going to pick him again unless he renegotiates that contract clause, perhaps because Redfearn doesn't fancy him for a second season (or even the rest of this one). Just a guess.  It is fair enough that the club keeps the details of a players contract private, but they have to give the broadest of explanations as to why a player suddenly disappears from view.

Buxton gets an extra year on his contract if plays another game, it was said yesterday that Collins is on the same kind. I think we should be looking to get rid of Collins anyway, he was a good player he's just past it now it's sad to say. Buxton may worth keeping but I can see why we don't risk it as he may not be the same player again after his injuries but you never know.

Thanks for that info Amanda.  If that is right then it is a barmy deal because you can see how we would end up where we are.  I agree about Collins.  He has been a good player but he is being found out now in the Championship.  Buxton I would see as someone who can offer defensive cover, but not a starter for me, and depending what money he is on he may not be worth keeping on that basis for that long so I can see how we have arrived at a stalemate.

You can't help but question the ability of the person/people who are responsible for dealing with player registrations and contracts.
Last season we had the fiasco with Faz Rawson's loan deal which could have cost the club its place in the Championship and now we have the Lewis Buxton contract farce.
If Buxton has a clause that allows him an extra year on his contract if he plays a prescribed number of games then the club should honour that agreement as anything else smacks of sharp practice and could potentially lead to a messy legal challenge. Why on earth would our negotiator put something into a contract if the club has no intention of allowing it to happen.
There has been a fair bit of speculation about the state of the club's finances and when it resorts to this type of practice it makes you wonder if there is more than a degree of truth to the rumours.

It's strange but it was done before the club had decided for the change of ways. Need to make sure the mistakes have been learnt from.
