All managers and pundits state that the January transfer window is an awful time to bring in players, especially when you are in a position where you are desperate for them, like at the bottom of the league or like Man city with Kompany out and no decent centre backs, it isn't a good time. Some factors that play into this for us are:-
1. We are near the bottom of the league, players will not want that
2. Location, it is a fact young men prefer the big city lights, Charlton have a better chance at attracting players than us
3. Short-term contracts, we can only offer these due to our position, if they are longer term it will have a clause to reduce wages with a relegation.
4. A lot of loans won't become available until after all business is done in Feb, because managers will want to know what they have before loaning out fringe players.
5. Our wages, we know we are in the bottom 3 of payers in the league, and money talks
6. Who will actually be available, the quantity of players is less in Jan as contracts run out at the end of June
7. We won't want to pay transfer fees, we have to financially plan for league 1 next season so why waste money
8. Foreign unknowns - These may be available but are higher risk
9. Wasted a few wages already on Kelly and Best, mainly Best
10. Most business is done at the end of the month, leaving less games to save the season or for the players to settle in or get match fit
Realistically to stay up it is the players at the club now that will need to deliver as the core, we may get lucky and bring in a gem but I feel this desire by the manager and some fans to get to Jan and see it as our saviour is flawed.
I think it is fairly obvious we will be about where we are at the end of the season. We all know that the tables barely change apart from one or two teams who have quality and combined that with a change in the club that was previously holding them back-we dont have that quality and won't be getting it.
Redfern is doing OK but we are up against it because of all the reasons you state.
