Waiting for the great cheap forward...

At Don Valley we (our particular enclave of frozen squinters) used to often say that we had Alfie, but no team. For the first couple of seasons under Evans we had a team, but no Alfie. Now we seem to have -at most- half a team...and nobody like any sort of Alfie.

Derbyshire has shown that the version of him from the first half of last season is actually the true manifestation of himself - it reminds me of when we were playing Barker and Warne at this level. Which is no reflection on JCH - who is wasting his time having to come back forty yards to get the ball. The problem is that he hasn't got himself to pass to up front. With service, he could perhaps paper over the cracks. A decent (and perhaps only decent is all that we need) forward is vital.

Then there's the problem of service. I've screamed for years that we need to get round the back of teams: this will always cause problems for defences, yet we attack without pace and pinball around until we get to a fluffed final pass with such regularity that we are wasting any possession we are allowed. We allow every defence to get numbers back every time. With pace on the wings, our multitude of defensive midfielders can then just support. Our forwards can then play where they need to play: in the opposition area. More chances just might mean more goals. I'm sure that others will see it differently.

So, just one forward, one or two wingers...oh, and a defence - an we're there.

Welcome Craig, JCH will do a job but as you state supply is a bit of an issue. Myself, I would be playing Thorpe as our midfield anchor allowing the likes of G Ward and Newell to press forward and supply said defence frightener

Bit unfair on Camp who as we knew would be very busy. Our defence is the worst we've had in years, Smallwood is having a horrendous season, Greens legs have gone, so Thorpe must be given a run in this role. Our forward players are bereft of ideas, it seems all our players are just a repeat of each other. Derbyshire for his wages doesn't represent value for money, but that could be said of a few of Evans signings, Collins, Halford, Ledesma, Maguire, record signing Bowery etc. We've got more deadwood than after a forest fire and I feel Redfearn is in the position of, can't polish a turd and will only roll it in glitter

Agree about Camp - apart from a stinker against the Porklife, I'm a fan of his. The worry is that we've got about ten games until the tranny window - with the further problems of not just finding some quality willing to play for us, but also getting rid of the masses of dross brought in by Evans. When one player's biggest public contributions have been two or three inflammatory Twitter messages for his Championship wages it is a real worry.

Whatever all the Evans apologists want to say, he has brought in many players currently (and over the three seasons previously) who are sitting in the stands looking very comfortable on match days. It makes Schofield look committed.
