Dear Volkswagen customer,

We regret to inform you that the Type EA 189 engine built into your vehicle with the Vehicle Identification Number xxxxxxxxxxxxx you submitted, is affected by software that causes discrepancies in the values for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) during dynometer runs. Your car is safe from a technical standpoint and roadworthy.

We are very sorry to have broken your trust and are working at full speed to find a technical solution. Volkswagen will cover the cost relating directly to this repair.

We will be in touch with you directly to explain what steps are required. We'll do the necessary work at our cost.

Yours faithfully,

Volkswagen.

I had a Skoda Octavia recently as a company car, BTW never again, shocking piece of kit, gone back to peugeot thank god ( my own car as well) , will i be chased for the balance taxed owed when the emissions results put me in a higher emissions band fr the 3 years i had it.

This you coudn't make it up, apparently the Eurozone powers that be - knew about it as well 5 years ago.

Mmmmm call me the cynic as well as other things, but were we not in recession then along with the Germans, if this had come out then, VW would be bankrupt, they didnt win the war but the Germans control a lot of what we do in the country whether we like it or not.

What is it 11m cars? And set aside £6b?

After the massive fines, the EU, countries impose, drop in sales and the massing car owners wanting compensation for losses in value, mpg, tax etc plus the court costs they're going to need a lot more than that. I think they'll be lucky if they don't go under.

Worse, was notified today the voluntary fix will not be available until the new year! It's a horrendous business, love my car though regardless

Thay had a bloke from the Motor Traders Association on Radio 4 this morning.  He "was confident" that no other car makers had done anything wrong.  We'll see.

A wider problem is that without the fix some experts are now saying diesel cars are too polluting and should be withdrawn as a class.  I'll give you a fiver for yours, Ex.wink

I bought mine on the morning of Sept 18th it became public later in the day. I'm stuck with a finance deal made on the proviso of what I was buying, for me that contract is broken if I do not have a vehicle that is a 170bhp doing 50mpg and band G in tax. I know I'm small fish, but if you take the pond, and then add in dealers, suppliers, shareholders, people losing jobs, court costs, multi billion fines globally there is no way they can survive that

Ex, is there nothing in the sale of goods act you could look at. If you took out finance you surely have some comeback either way.

 oh Dear!

Its frustrating!

Lets hope someone takes a class action and customers get every penny. Dont want people to lose their jobs. What a royal mess once again all brought on by our own lies, and greed. we humans are not to be trusted.

on a wider response I am angry at the manipulation of people, employees and the environment. What a huge crime this is.

Another clear indication that companies are just as likely to be sociopathic as any individual, but they do so much more harm.

The USA springs to mind currently.

Agreed, Ian, although I wouldn't have singled out the USA.  A bent banker far more likely to get sent down in the US than here.  Our politicians just love an entrepreneur - however big a crook he may be.
