This site needs Ridgeway

I never though that I would heap such praise on my old adversary but credit where credit is due.....He is single handedly trying to get the off topics going.

Off topics is the one weakness of this site with little enthusiasm to get involved.

Come on fellas...RUFC supporters have much more to offer than threads on football.

That's nice of you to say, K.  However, I have never been your adversary.  I would say Geeter, Shiregreen and Cheeks fell more into that category.

I am very aware that frequent posting can get peoples' backs up and, as Zilzal suggested during his brief sojourn on Banter, that it might be evidence of narcissism or insanity.  But then I think people can simply not read my stuff if they don't wish to.  You are right to mention my role in OT.  This is largely because even though I have watched football for 50 years I only really notice goals and goalscorers.  The intricasies of midfield and defensive play pass largely over my head.  Sad but true and I leave football comment mainly to more knowledgeable members.

I'm afraid splitting the off topic from the main board is the issue.

A new vote has appeared on the main board with little fanfare (does Ex not want us to know about it?) - so if you want a single forum for all topics vote away - the nays have it at the moment by a distance.

I am going to abstain because I've only been here two minutes, but if I was to vote it would be for the status quo. I kind of like the sanctuary of the non-football side of the site for those who take the trouble to visit it.

I was thinking of you yesterday when I watched the 1985 movie, Hitler's SS: a Portrait in Evil. A stellar cast but shocking script and continuity and some bonkers miscasting, eg. Carroll Baker as a German matron!

It's about two brothers who respectively join the SS and the SA.  It's pretty daft in parts.  One brother deserts on the eastern front in 1944 but keeps popping up in uniform in Berlin and Munich right through to the end of the war without being arrested.  Tony Randall is pretty good as a gay comedian.  David Warner is good as Heydrich.  Stratford Johns and Jose Ferrer are rather wasted as is Michael Elphick as Rohm.  Colin Jeavons is OTT as Adolf.

I've watched lots of similar things including Holocaust, Generation War, Winds of War etc.  They tend to be a bit formulaic.  The leading German characters tend to be anti-Nazi, there is usually an intellectual Jewish university professor and a German woman who sings in night clubs like a poor man's Marlene and a younger brother who is a fanatic Hitler Youth type who invariably ends up with a Panzerfaust in the streets of Berlin.
