WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE STEVE EVANS?

It must be a very difficult time for SE at present. As well as the pressure he is under regarding the position of his club and the associated criticisms about performance/tactics and player acquisition, he now has a carrot being dangled just down the A1 which would offer relief from the cloud he is currently under.

He is no doubt working out his options, which at the end of the day must result in a decision that is best for him. His considerations will no doubt include:

  • An honest assessment of his ability to pull RUFC out of their dire situation and create a team which has the ability to survive as a long term championship team.
  • Consideration of the finance available to him to make the first point a possibility.
  • How he will react to the inevitable ill-feeling towards him if the side fails to fire - something he is not used to from home fans.

If he has any doubts about these points, he may consider:

  • At 52, is he approaching the twilight of his managerial career and would he be better moving to a job in which he has proved himself very effectively in the past, thereby ensuring an eventual retirement on the back of possible success.
  • In preparation for that retirement, should he not work in the area in which he lives and presumably plans to retire.
  • Will Peterborough provide him with the resources, backing, financial reward and potential that will provide him with the challenge and reward that he has become used to.

There are many other considerations but at the end of the day I reckon his decision will be purely personal and issues such as loyalty and promises will take second place to what is best for him.

So if you were SE, what would you do?

To get the ball rolling, and considering the question from a purely personal viewpoint, I would go if offered the Peterborough job.

Okay a few points. I genuinely think that even if we were to go down he won't get the sack. His job security is probably higher here than at posh.
He strikes me as a man who strives to achieve the best. Peterborough would be a step backwards or sideways at the very best.

I believe he has built this team up to be capable of survival in the championship. I know bradthemiller is turning red with anger and getting his brown paper bag out as he reads this, but I believe we have been playing goalie wag with Roos and Halford as captain was a weight around the team rather than Frecklington who will lead by example and inspire it with his lion hearted approach.

The only way that RUFC can compete in this division is with grit, guile and determination. Something Halford lacks and frecklington and Steve Evans both have in abundance.

Tactically I find his use of substitutes to be his chink in his armour, but then again I haven't had 3 successful years as manager.

He will go.  There's no way RUFC will stay up without radical change and I don't believe we'd get back up within 3 years.  If we did what would be the point?  S8 (who I hold in high esteem) said we'd come back stronger to the Championship but where's the mechanism for that?  It's not as if we have a squad of home grown youngsters who might grow into the job.  No it's time for a change and SE knows it.

Right, I've put down my brown paper bag....................

It would suit both parties if Mr Evans were to move to Peterborough. He wouldn't have a relegation on his CV to contend with & he could cite family reasons, new challenge etc whereas we could get in a manager who might be able to galvanise our group of mercenaries (I use this term instead of players) into a team, hopefully instilling some team spirit, something that has been sadly lacking so far this season.

Heman, while I respect his views, thinks Mr Evans use of substitutes to be the chink in his armour. I disagree, the two main chinks in the managers armour are his relationships with certain members of his squad, both past & present, & his frankly abysmal recruitment policy, for every Tavernier on loan there's three or four Adam Morgans, for every Kari Arnason, there's three or four Greg Harford's etc

We are almost universally disliked throughout English football, be it fans, media, FL, referees etc & that is down to one man & one man alone.....Mr Evans!!!

Imagine that you are steve evans and you just read your post Glen.

Twilight!

Retirement?

No! Steve Evans does not strike me as depressed.

He is not looking for the low level position and lack of security that Peterborough would offer him.

He is more secure here and has every chance of more success (relative) than at Posh. At the very least it is certainly not a better option.

I would instead wager that steve evans is thinking about proving all the doubters wrong and running away will be totally not on his mind. If he has as strong a relationship with TS as he seems to have,  he will be laughing his head off and not a little angry at the thought of leaving for Peterborough.

Lets imagine TS and SE sitting together.

Posh job up again! Yes Gaffer.

Right, how we doing in prep for saturday...?

I must acknowledge his scattergun revolving door recruitment policy is weird.

But I bet his ratio of failures to success is the same as Ferguson or wenger in the sense that they have brought in players that just didn't click. Their list is massive.

Sorry about the brown paper bag gag mate. Just a bit of banter between a deluded optimist and a serial pessimist. Hope all is well.
