TEAM FOR CHARLTON - EARLY STAB

Assuming no new loanees before the game, here's the team I would put out at Charlton.

                                           CAMP

BUXTON         RAWSON                   THORPE          MATTOCK

            SMALLWOOD (Captain)                FRECKLINGTON

                  ODJIDJA-OFOE                 NEWELL

             JCH                    HALFORD (only jokingaww)   DERBYSHIRE

Our season starts at Charlton and we need to put out a side that not only stands a chance of picking up points, but one that has the chance to develop together over a prolonged period (Ofoe excepted). If we lost with this side, I would have no complaints.

Come on Steve, you know it makes sense!!

Assuming what we have now is what we have to pick from, I would go with the following in a 4:4:1:1 formation (right to left:-. Camp: Buxton, Thorpe, Wood, Mattock: Maguire, Smallwood, Ofoe, White: Andreu: JCH. The only reservation I have is Maguire playing wide right but I don't think we have anyone else who would be effective there. Otherwise that to me looks defensively solid and has a bit of pace and flair about it. We need JCH (or Bowery off the bench) to stretch teams with his pace and need someone in behind him to link play and get it in to feet.

Have you left Newell out deliberately this time Smiler?!

Not sure which team I like the look of there.

Is it right to put camp straight in?

But, I take Glenn point that we have been crying out for change so why not start as we mean to go on.

Still several games away from that I suspect and the emergency loan is potentially short term

Not sure I follow that Glenn. I wouldn't have necessarily wanted to get the loanees in because I would rather build the club long term around our own younger players, but they are in now whether I like it or not so I am selecting from what is on offer.

Glenn - just re-read the string. Did you mean did I leave Halford (not Newell) out deliberately (after you jokingly hinted at including him)? If that is what you meant then yes, I most definitely did! I hope he comes good, I really do. His track record says he should. If he does it will be as a midfielder not a centre back. His performances in the back four have been woeful.

CAMP

BUXTON   RAWSON   THORPE   NEWELL

SMALLWOOD

MAGUIRE        FRECKLINGTON        WHITE

CLARK-HARRIS     DERBYSHIRE

SUBS - Collin, Collins, Halford, Ofoe, Andreu, Ladesma, Green,

Thorpe and Rawson have to start for me.  Newell and White down the left, alternating during the game as to who gets forward and who supports who.  Ofoe would be the 'impact' sub we bring on if we are chasing the game.

Like that idea Chris, two very capable lads who could swap and cover each other.

I think Ofoe will start though, if he is only here for a month, I cant see him sitting on the bench?

My fear is that SE will consider that CAMP will bring some stability to our defence and will persist with Halford and Collins. That would be a disaster because no goalkeeper could cover for the inadequacies of that pairing!

Ofoe is odds on to start - the only reason he is with us is to get match time - I bet it's written into the loan agreement!

If Mattock is fit, I would play him - we need dedicated FBs. That then leaves us with a wealth of options on the left with White and Newell. Regardless, I reckon a dedicated LB on loan is a top priority - I don't rate either Newell or White as cover in that position.

Smiler - apologies for the confusion earlier in the thread - I've just re-read it and confused myself totally!!

Rawon is a shoe - in for me.

Nice to have a debate about who is best rather than who is worst.

Ill go with most of that (including the Halford Joke no) apart from ........ Derbyshire. Look at it like this, last season, Colin was found wanting and replaced. This season Colin was deemed not goos enough and replaced. His repalcment then royaly f'd up and has been sent back and replaced. Now, how many more chances does Derbyshire get before he to is replaced. Missed pen when he grabbed the ball off Agard, how many missed chances since and the missed pen against FFC. Come on, if a goalie makes a mistake, costs you a goal, how many gols have Derbyshire misses cost us ?

Time for a change and i fear it will not happen, should another out and out striker appear I fear it will be at JCH's expense and he has done nothing wrong in every game he has worn the shirt

I think Mattock is great when fit and we need look no further this season...if fit.

Newall has to play in front of him or not at all. This does pose an issue for the midfield in general however and means hard choices.

Agree that Derbyshire needs to show something soon and if the boys Norwich cant get it out of him we are doomed.

There is a case developing to drop Derbyshire and play the 2 new lads with JCH.

Time will tell however depending on the impact they have.

If Mattock isn't fit for start of next week, go back for Lafferty on loan. I'd try & get him for the season anyway. Centre backs played that bad against Fulham, what do do, Rawson as got to come in. Do you risk Halford hoping taking the captaincy off him helps his game.
Frecklington if fit is going to start, might play 5 across the middle with JCH loan striker, Andrue can get up in support.

Agree Charlton, however, i can see Maguire being dropped, JCH pushed out right n the new lad from NCFC playing up front along side our goal machine no
