I have been interested in football kits ever since I repainted all my Subbuteo teams back in the 1960s.  This article gives (for me at least) a fascinating insight into the development of strip colours and until I read it I was unaware, for example, that Salmon Pink and Pink were very popular until around 1900.

I wonder why that is? Hardly would have been a fashion statement, maybe a manufacturing process or the fact we had proper winters, pink would show up more when decked in mud?

Don't know but your suggestions seem reasonable.  Clubs did develop sometimes from schools or rowing clubs etc and Reading originally played in the colours of the local rowing club, Salmon Pink, Pale Blue and Claret.  Wanderers adorned the 1872 FA Cup Final in Pink, Black and Cerise.  Those were the days!
