Anyone got any interesting ones?  I used to do metal detecting but got fed up only finding ring pulls.  I am now into mycology and we are just coming into the best picking season.  If anyone fancies a few wild mushrooms let me know.  I have been collecting and eating for about five years and have only poisoned two people in all that time and neither was fatal so you can trust me to send you something nice.

I am afraid mine is very predictable in its normalness, reading mainly factual history.

Volunteer coach at the local grassroots club, currently coaching a bunch of hormonal teenage girls (what a joy). Hence my interest in the women's game. It is a great job and developing the players from the kick and rush at U9 to where they are today is very satisfying.

Don't apologise.  I gave up reading novels years ago and now mainly read history with a strong preference for military history.  I also write the odd article for academic journals and I've had a couple published in History Today.  My latest piece was on the murder of King Edmund of Wessex in 946 and I have another out next year on Viking wars in the Midlands.

Talent is in the eye of the beholder.  I once had a programme out on military history on Channel 4 which was universally panned by the critics.  A.A.Gill suggested I was an idiot and said it was probably the worst programme he had ever reviewed. My last and only venture into TV.

I am afraid it is unavailable on Amazon: I used to have complimentary copies but these were on VHS and I binned them years ago.

Very true.  The most galling aspect of the whole thing is that the BBC later picked the idea up (the producer actually phoned me to discuss the format) called it Time Commanders and fronted it with Eddie Mair and had quite a success but refused to pay me a penny for pinching my idea.  Apparently this is normal in television.

Haven't read that although liked his Stalin book and looking forward to his forthcoming book on the Romanovs.  I was put off reading Jerusalem as I saw in reviews he seemed to accept Biblical accounts of David and Solomon pretty much at face value.  Some archaeologists suggest that even if they existed in reality their achievements have been wildly overstated.  That said a lot of people like the book.

He comes across in life as an arrogant two hat but he is a very good writer. Also enjoyed his book on Stalin.
