Hows the back 4 shaping up?

One wonder's if Arnie had not left whether we would have gone in for Collins or Thorpe.

As it is we have a right old battle shaping up.

Central defense.

Broadfoot must feel he deserves a start after last years never say die attitude even when played out of position and his immense end to the season when he finally got the recognition he deserved.

Then there's Richard wood, who despite only putting the shirt on once or twice looked like he was ok...

And then we have the vastly experienced Danny Collins, who despite his age will be a stern test for the others to muscle out.

Lastly, we have the Manchester united starlet, who, as yet is unproven in domestic league combat but comes with glowing reports and a few surprised glances from pundits around the country as he was let go by Van Gaal

Full Backs

At left back we have two experienced championship players in the middle of their careers and of a similar age. We have the aggressive Joe mattock and the pacey Aidy white. Could it be true that millers fans and Evo still want Tavs as well...surely the expense and the signing of these two puts that one to bed.

At right back we have our Frazer who looked solid enough last year but tires badly and ended up injured and unable to regain his place due to this. In the ring with him is Lewis Buxton, who looks like the one to get the shirt but it wont be straight forward.

All in all a back 4 that looks somewhat stronger than anything we had certainly on a permanent basis. Were lafferty, hunt, Morgan and Arnie better...

Defensively yeah looking miles better. The middle 3 of Ward, Frecks and Ledesma oozes excitement. Jury is still out for me whether Derbyshire, JCH or Bowery can cut it in the way that 4-2-3-1 works They need to cough up 25 goals between them, but its more than doable.

Not sure about Collins, wanna see him before I make judgement. But I think we have enough at the back to be fairly solid. Don't think we'll get Martinez but you never know! A right back is an absolute must, Richardson got targeted last year and he will again.

Seems though we're going for a 16 or so who will be mostly present, and will more than cut it. Which is great. We need to develop an identity and connection with our players, and not guessing which 4 loans are going to be in the team this week. Loans should be for cover nothing more (unless a perm deal is on the cards after it). If Thorpe goes alongside Smallwood it would be nice to see a Rawson type at the back, and vice versa if Thorpe is at the back someone a bit more mobile alongside Smallwood (not Green!). But it shows we're not far away doesn't it. We'll always come unstuck with squad depth but that's forgivable as long as our first 16 can give anyone a game we'll be ok

As Shankly said, get the spine of a team right, and the rest will follow, Cloughie also did the same.

Good GK , CB, CM, CF

So when's Martinez coming Steve.
