The British Empire - a figment of the imagination?

For many years quite a few people have been awarded MBEs, OBEs and CBEs.

Should we congratulate the many people who have received those gongs?

MBE or Member of the British Empire. British Empire? We don't have a British Empire anymore.

You've got to smile.

Arise Sir Tony Stewart, would be nice one, for leading the club out of administration / New Stadium / Season ticket sales thru the roof. Average of 10K every home match says it all.

It is up to the individual.

It may not come as a surprise to say that this individual think its a load of meaningless rubbish.

I have an aversion to the elite giving awards for a supposed service to society. Truly, I have an aversion to the elite members of our ruling class in general.

Firstly, I wouldn't equate any apparent good I do to recognition from a representative of the 'British Empire'. Thats because I dont think it is representative of my motivation for doing anything, and I dont think it reflects who I am.

Secondly, I have no personal connection to the idea of empire, or to the people who administer it.

I am quite happy to be a part of the UK, and appreciate the many good and honourable things we have achieved, but I couldnt in all conscience celebrate an award when the 'empire' was based on so much more than honour and good intentions.

Are we not part of a supposed Eurozone now? Albeit a failing one at that. And what about the Commonwealth? It's non-existent. The monarchy has a wish to perpetuate the life a dead parrot. That's a contradiction if you like.

The parrot is dead. It is no more. It's not even resting or pining for the Fjords.

You've just got to smile.

The idea of empire is a nonsense, still proud to be British but if I was French I would be proud of that too.
